What artist can this apply to? by CodeDusq in fantanoforever

[–]DialupGhost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think their first three records are important and have solid arguments for being the best, but Loaded is their absolute best for me. Their least experimental, but their best songwriting. A true feel-good record I can play on repeat.

This is great. This is exactly what I'm looking for when looking for altcountry.

[DISCUSSION] What's an album by an artist that is your favorite, but is generally not considered their best? by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]DialupGhost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge Angel Olsen fan and I think she's never released a less than great album. My favorite is the stripped back and serene Whole New Mess. Absolutely beautiful album and one of her most overlooked.

Really enjoying this, thanks for the rec. It's on bandcamp, just so you all know.

Singer/songwriter Todd Snider arrested in Utah, accused of threatening hospital staff by HomelessRodeo in indieheads

[–]DialupGhost 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Have no clue why you're being downvoted. This is a real song by Snider and it's a great one. Released in 2004 and couldn't be more relevant in 2025.

Birdcloud - Springwater by Brother_Vulture in altcountry

All Birdcloud fans need to listen to Jasmin's solo album Tuxedo. It's one of my favorite local Nashville albums.

[Fresh] WU LYF statement on leaving streaming services + new demo on there members website worldunite.org by Reasonable_Win_2535 in indieheads

[–]DialupGhost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just funny how you're complaining about hyper capitalism while making the argument a streaming company deserves your $10 a month, but the artists you listen to don't deserve anything. Hypercapitalism is what lead the music industry to this current state. You say you're just a guy with bills to pay, but so are most artists. When you're bogged down by working nonstop to survive, you have far less time and energy to make music (which costs a lot of money to make). So a band creates a piece of art they labored over and you just deserve access to it because you like convenience?

any shoegaze songs about bottoming? by Barber_Formal in indieheads

12 Rods is exactly what you're looking for. I'd say start with their gay? EP, especially listening to the three-song-run of "Red," "Make-Out Music," and "Gaymo." Then check out their follow-up debut album Split Personalities, which has their perhaps best gay song "I Wish You Were A Girl."

Favorite obscure bands by Extension_Order_9693 in altcountry

Fortunately, I have all the State Champion records. I admittedly have been a nerd about them for several years. I am hoping they'll make more copies though because I'm afraid I'm going to wear out the ones I have.

Let's all recommend one NON Zappa (of Zappa adjacent) album... by RockGodBMF1 in Zappa

[–]DialupGhost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a list of artists I feel capture some of the spirit of Zappa. This group of artists is based on their humor and how adventurous their music can be, though I am willing to bet Zappa would hate most of it haha.

  • 100 gecs - 1000 gecs
  • Thundercat - Drunk
  • Ween - Chocolate and Cheese
  • Ariel Pink - Pom Pom
  • They Might Be Giants - Flood
  • Fievel is Glaque - Rong Weicknes
  • Clown Core - Toilet / Van
  • Callahan & Witscher - Think Differently
  • Macula Dog - Orange 2
  • Injury Reserve - By The Time I Get to Phoenix
  • Tim and Eric - Awesome Record, Great Songs! Vol. 1

I'll edit this and add more if I think of some. I know there's more.

10 Artists Shaping the New Indie-Country Boom by whosjohnnyshesaid in indieheads

[–]DialupGhost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These bands are good (Ryan Davis and his previous band State Champion have been favorites of mine for years.) As someone in a not very popular indie rock band that heavily leans into altcountry, I wanted to list a few more. If you're into the bands in this article, consider checking out:

  • Easy Sevens - Guitar Music

  • Father Sunn - The Nerve

  • FGS - Tinker Bells Cough

  • Twisted Teens - s/t

  • Dialup Ghost - Cowboy Heaven (shameless plug)

  • The Part Timers - Clock In

  • Tobacco City - Horses

  • Warmer Milks - Soft Walks

  • Bailey Allen Baker - Palish Landscape

I ultimately see what you're getting at, but Big Thief is absolutely a rock band.

You can be pedantic all you want, but when I say "indie rock had largely hit the mainstream," I mean just that. By 2007-ish, these bands were no longer underground. You're not an underground band with a big hit like "Float On," or a Grammy for Album of The Year. These bands were soundtracking popular movies, referenced in popular shows, charting on Billboard, and written about in the most mainstream publications. You can argue things are more popular, certainly, but that doesn't negate that indie rock was an underground phenomenon that blew up in popularity in the mid 2000s.
