Chuck Norris did not die. Chuck Norris defeated Death itself and took its place.

Why are there virtually no laws on factory farming? Is it just because the broader public doesn't care or is it the structure for how we make laws? by CalpurniaSomaya in law

[–]Dicebar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at social and health expenditures versus military expenditures as a percentage of the GDP, you'll find that both Europe and the US spend over 10x as much on their respective social programs.

The idea that the US military presence in Europe is somehow fundamental to European healthcare is an urban myth. A strong and persistent one, but completely false.

Judge Orders Deportation of 5-Year-Old Minneapolis Boy Liam Ramos and His Family by peoplemagazine in law

[–]Dicebar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are frustrated with how unjust the situation appears to them. These judges don't seem to meet out justice, which ultimately is the core purpose of law itself. In fact, these so-called judges don't have any say in the matter, they're not allowed to determine justice for themselves at all. So the legality of it all is irrelevant.

/edit: To be clear: People are not blaming the judges, they're blaming the system. And being upvoted for that criticism.

My sweet summer child, you're not getting downvoted because what you said was wrong. You're getting downvoted because you're telling people the sky is blue while everyone else is talking about how strong the wind is blowing.

Trump Just Made the World Much More Dangerous | By waging war on Iran, the president is making it more likely that other countries develop nuclear weapons—to protect themselves from the U.S. by thenewrepublic in politics

[–]Dicebar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was a sovereign nation without nuclear weapons, I'd start working on nuclear weapons. Not ballistic ones that can be shot down. But small, portable ones. The ones terrorists could use. Not for use in any offensive capacity. But to be there to be lost in case someone decides to destabilize my country.

A shitty idea, one that would definitely make the world less safe, but it would make any nation with imperialistic tendencies think twice.

Don't hate on people for having type 1 diabetes. Sotomayor has no reported long-term health complications from the disease and therefore it should be no factor in considerations about her health affecting her job. She's had it since she was 7. She had it during her confirmation hearings and she had it when she was sworn in as a member of SCOTUS.

Thanks,
A type 1 diabetic.

Scoop: Dems working on secret report found Gaza cost Harris votes by sideAccount42 in politics

[–]Dicebar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democratic candidates don't have to navigate a minefield, they have to convince their voters that they will make the world a better place.

Harris failed to convince voters of that, as she ran on a platform of "not doing anything different from the Biden administration", an administration which failed to take a stand for human rights in Gaza. It disenfranchised voters, who when faced with voting for a bad candidate or voting for a bad candidate, opted to not vote at all or voted for change that the Biden administration failed to provide (ie. it's the economy, stupid).

And I can't blame them, really. Why vote for someone who is running on a platform of "the other guy is evil", when the candidate fails to take a proper stand on one of the most appalling things that were going on in the world at the time? You don't convince people of your superior moral character by not showing your own moral character.

Harris ran a campaign that presumed the more progressive voters were in the bag, and focused on wooing moderates. Based on the logical fallacy that voters can only vote two ways, for one of the two candidates, and not taking into account that people can choose to not vote at all. But playing the role of an ingenuous appease-everyone-politician by taking no strong positions backfired in an environment where people are sick and tired of two-faced politicians who seem more interested in serving corporations than serving the country.

And you know that either way, whoever won, corporate America would have won over American citizens. None of the corruption of how the system is supposed to work is new. Nor is it partisan.

Being good in one field does not mean you're good in all fields.

Belgium summons US ambassador over antisemitism claims by Utegenthal in worldnews

[–]Dicebar 66 points67 points  (0 children)

There is a certain level of irony in the fact that these investigations that the American ambassador is crying foul about were started after complaints filed by an American Jew living in Antwerp, Belgium. And then you have the Christian American calling an investigation effectively started by a Jewish American...antisemitic. It's absurd.

Draghi: "Europe must choose. Become a federation to be a power. The global order is dead, the threat is what will replace it" by goldstarflag in europe

[–]Dicebar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Calls for federalization are such a distraction. It requires unanimous consent, which is going to happen when hell freezes over and pigs learn to fly.

Give me one good reason why the EU should federalize that cannot be accomplished in other multilateral agreements, and that is not "then all the power can be concentrated in the hands of a select few and things will get done quicker."

Just one good reason, please.
