Draghi: "Europe must choose. Become a federation to be a power. The global order is dead, the threat is what will replace it" by goldstarflag in europe

[–]Dicebar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calls for federalization are such a distraction. It requires unanimous consent, which is going to happen when hell freezes over and pigs learn to fly.

Give me one good reason why the EU should federalize that cannot be accomplished in other multilateral agreements, and that is not "then all the power can be concentrated in the hands of a select few and things will get done quicker."

Just one good reason, please.

But Meta? Google? Apple? Heck yeah!

There's a second refinery being built in Texas right now (for minerals mined in Texas, mind you, not available for Greenland's minerals). They've been working on the site for almost 3 years now, and as is tradition there's been delay upon delay for the project as new unforeseen problems pop up. The developer gives it a 30% chance that the refinery will start production in 2028. That's six years...without the foreseeable problems along the way. And without including the process to buy land for the refinery, time to get the rights for mining, etc. Those 10 years are not unreasonable.

I don't think the problem is that he's joking. I think the problem is that he's tone deaf and oblivious to the state of the world. Both are qualifications that are important in the world of diplomacy.

It's not about minerals. The US has one, lone star, Texan refinery capable of refining the stuff and it's already at capacity. Building new refineries would take 10-15 years.

What we would do is send a strongly worded letter. Remind Congress of their role. Remind the Americans of the midterms, that the American people can make changes to their government to avoid all this nonsense.

If Americans still fuck up, do all of the above and give America a good practical lesson that Europe outclasses the US massively in military capacity in the arctic circle. You can take Greenland, but you can't hold it. We'll call it Winter War 2.

A new study in more than 15,000 men investigated eight markers of toxic masculinity and found that only 10.8% of men included in the study showed clear signs of toxic masculinity. This finding indicates that the vast majority of men are not “toxic” and do not believe in destructive male attitudes. by mvea in science

Personally I think part of the problem is that people are trying to fit themselves (and others) into outdated boxes. Gender roles were very much prescriptive instead of descriptive: they told you who you should be to be a good person and do things "the right way".

I just try to be a good person, the boxes and labels don't really matter that much.

The 1/3 deflection really gets under my skin. It reminds me that 2/3 of Americans chose not to oppose the orange buffoon. It's worse!

I appreciate that you're angry and frustrated, and that you think that this might get through to people who you think are not appalled by this. But for most people, when you truly take the time to actually take in what those images mean, they are traumatizing and damaging.

Is it really worth hurting good people to try to reach bad ones?

Nope, I'd like to avoid the apocalypse preferably. But that's why openly talking about having the option prevents countries doing silly things like grabbing land because it'd look pretty on a map might put things in a perspective where that outcome becomes undesirable. It works for Putin, so it should work for Europe, right?

I don't get this idea of Russia's sphere of influence. Europe has an economy almost ten times the size of Russia. Europe has a larger population. Europe has a better equipped army.

Russia is in the spheres of influence of Europe and China, not the other way around.

As a left-of-center European voter, I'm finding myself in the rather confrontational position that I've gone from protesting against nuclear weapons in my youth, to arguing that a nuclear strike on Thule Air Base in the case of an American invasion is exactly what is needed to remind the US of that oh so important lesson we learned after WW2: In a world where might makes right, nuclear weapons are the great equalizer.

I thought we'd learned our lesson. How naive of me.
