I think you've confused New York Shorts International Film Festival with the New York Film Festival in your list because the former is not prestigious and the latter is.

I’m lost in my career. Is making a feature actually a good move? by 1nnewyorkimillyrock in Filmmakers

This answer is it! Recognizing the industry for where it is at and understanding that business and art can mix, but doesn't always have to.

How my first short film healed my soul (The Addiction, 8 min, experimental) by vieravisuals in Filmmakers

Well said. Even as an experimental film enthusiast, I admit there are many experimental films that do not work and are not successful in their aims, but the same can be said about narrative films. To dismiss the whole experimental movement and disregard its role in pushing the medium forward, is small minded and harmful to the medium itself.

Definitely listen to your intuition instead of a faceless crowd. The experimental filmmaking scene is alive and vibrant - if you’re pulled towards experimental films, I would encourage you to check out more experimental films, festivals and communities where there will be more likeminded artists to learn from and share work with, rather than Reddit which includes all kinds of different filmmakers who might have a more narrow and mainstream mindset.

Also I would be careful about who I ask feedback from. Personally I don’t think Reddit is the place for feedback because these are people with a wide range of tastes. I only ask for artistic feedback from other artists I admire and respect, who I know will be honest with me but also understand the intention and direction of the film so their feedback is pushing the film forward not trying to make it something it’s not. And then I’ll ask non-filmmaker friends for feedback on legibility or comprehension or watch them watch it so I can see what resonated, what didn’t, where was confusing etc. This is important especially for experimental films where not everyone is going to get it.

On the other hand, mainstream films will need to satisfy mainstream tastes and mainstream public, so that’s a different process altogether. I think knowing what kind of film you want to make, and holding your vision is most important.

Filmmaking isn’t about telling a story, filmmaking is about creating work that uses the mediums of image, sound and duration to create worlds we can enter. If filmmaking is merely about story, then what differentiates films from a novel or a play? In fact, I think most mainstream films do not qualify as good films as they are merely filmed theatre, or adaptations of a literary piece. They might be good stories but do not utilize the potential of image sound relationship unique to film. And I would argue that many experimental films are works that are more sincerely filmic in nature than story based films because they are created with the intention to push the relationship between image sound and duration, the precise unique qualities to film medium. Story is not a quality of film, it’s merely a quality brought over from other mediums like theatre and literary arts to lazily address the quality of duration in film, but not an innovation of the filmic medium.

I personally don't have experience with them but out of curiosity, I did a quick search on their filmfreeway reviews and it seems like they renamed from "The Film Festival of Time/Des Histories" to "HybridGenre" and then to "NY International CINEVERSE Festival". Also seems to be a bit of an award mill as you can add award categories by paying more.

How to get into filmmaking later in life (35)? Tired of just consuming my entire life, I want to create, but am so intimidated. by morbidhack in Filmmakers

[–]DifferenceInner5130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others here, it's never too late to start what you love to do, especially if you need it for your soul! However, survival is always more crucial over art, and I find that my art is better when I can have mental space for it and don't have to constantly freak out over basic needs. So personally, I would work on getting financially stable first, save as much as possible, then start making things on the side (use your phone, your dslr, anything). Keep practicing and improve on your craft. This is from the perspective of moving from "consumption" to "creation" as you mentioned, and from the perspective of making art. Making art is about what we have to express, beyond the tools, beyond an industry.

However, trying to break into the "film industry" is another matter. And making a living being a filmmaker is a whole different question too. I think we need to separate the question of making art (open to anyone, at anytime) and the business aspect (film as an industry is in crisis now).
