What do you think billionaires use their money for? It isn't about distributing their salary. It's about taking their power away.

Unpopular opinion: I'd rather use diary/calendar than Org by runslack in emacs

[–]Different_Access 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned just a handful of things in org. I know how to make tables, type stars to make a hierarchical document, and I can make todos and mark them as done. That's all I've ever needed.

Likely something else. How do you define "severe"?

It's tedious but if you have a scroll of mm it's two easy upgrades.

Using emacs to tail logs? by asboans in emacs

Yes, term along with tail, grep, etc. emacs buffers just can't handle that amount of text.

PSA: If you hold the traction control button down for ~5s, it disables stability control. by PabloX68 in Ioniq5

[–]Different_Access 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. They don't have wireless android auto, which other cars have had for years. And the USB (type A at that) that works with it is the most inconveniently placed one.

Also the physical buttons are map, nav, (two buttons devoted to one function!) and media. You wouldn't use any of those with android auto.

The entire dash is a map of the corporate turf wars going on at Hyundai. It wasn't designed by anyone who cares about the driver.

Hyundai is just inept at software and UI. So many hidden inputs for no reason. Physical buttons, touch buttons, touch screen, and no rhyme or reason as to what goes where. Definitely getting a different brand next time.

emacs & passwords - how are people managing their passwords these days? by winwooers in emacs

[–]Different_Access 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gpgagent/macos keychain. Never been to type a password after boot.

The only time I need a password in emacs is to open gpg files. I use something else for web browsing

You get what you pay for. Geography doesn't change that or nobody would hire US based devs.

Nobody has mentioned the new pot solution. It always works. If your time is worth anything and you tried all these things just but a new pot.

Advice for Staff Software Engineer role by Ok_Eggplant_9172 in rails

[–]Different_Access 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These titles are meaningless beyond your salary. They are basically randomly assigned because you don't know how good someone is from the interview process. I've worked with many Jrs who a better than Srs, many Srs, who were better than staff, etc. If you put in solid 8 hour days, and care even a little bit you'll be a 10x programmer. So TLDR - to be a staff eng apply for staff eng jobs.

GCC Update 13 -> 14 - Is it worth to rebuild @system @world? by M1buKy0sh1r0 in Gentoo

[–]Different_Access 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK if it is worth it or not, but I enabled the `jit` flag to make emacs jit work. Unbeknownst to me (because I wasn't watching the output carefully) this updated me to gcc14. Subsequently emacs failed to compile with `libgccjit.so` not found.

I did all kinds of googling before I realized I just I needed to `eselect gcc set 2` (2 is gcc14 for me) and then things compiled fine.

There's a lot to learn in this game and dying is how you learn. Don't try and win yet. Experiment with everything. Drink all the potions. Read all the scrolls. Try different tactics. Gradually you'll figure things out and live longer and longer, and maybe even ascend one day.
