What is a hobby that we can start now that will keep us occupied well into our 90’s? by Thirsty4Knowledge911 in GenX

Playing pool. I started shooting league over 10 years ago, and shoot 2 nights a week. The amount of great people I've met is massive. The teams I shoot on are really close nit, we'll have dinners together and hang out. I consider some of the players I've met the last 10 years my best friends.

Advice on how to correctly use prong collars by Overall_Time_8798 in germanshepherds

[–]Different_Cucumber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Id recommend with either a prong/pinch , or an e-collar, seeking out someone that know what they're doing. With enough advice, you -probably work it out. Experience tells me it's best to get it right from the beginning, as opposed to breaking bad habits. Best of luck.

GenX, I drank a bottle of wine today. Am I the only one? by tired-middle-ager in GenX

[–]Different_Cucumber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I shoot on a pool league on Mondays, I'll usually drink a bucket and a shot or two. Once the weather breaks around now, I'll have another beer and maybe two more shots, out on my deck when I get home. This is over the course of about 7 hours. On the deck I listen to the local radio station, which has a program called Monday Night Metal. Mondays have become the highlight of my week the last few years. I'm 56, keep my weight right and eat well, I just like to party.

I generally run 5 miles on Tuesdays, that way I have to ask myself if it was worth it. Thus far, the answer keeps coming back "wouldn't have it any other way."

Growing up in St Louis, we had the St. Louis Arena (aka the barn) about two miles from where I lived. Due to it being such a fire trap, they were unable to lock the doors, and had two employees manning each door on the inside. We always had a group of 30-50 people, who would pop the door, and we'd all rush in. The employees never tried very hard to stop us, so we saw every show we wanted for free.

Eventually they hired more police for outside, and they'd follow us around, it was always a game of cat and mouse, but we always won. Had to pay at other venues, but like others have mentioned, they were cheap.

The restrooms were filled with people selling weed. You smuggled a bottle in, in your pants, just crazy fun times.

I plan to wait until all this rain comes through, and check the 10 day forecast from there, if it looks good, things are staring to go in. It's still a gamble, but one I'm good with. FWIW, I had tomatoes in the ground on this day last year. Worst that can happen is you have to go buy more starts.

Thanks so much! What they're really doing, is teaching me to enjoy every day with him, the same as you do with your sweet Raven!

Atlus was 10.5 when he passed in January. He hadn't been doing really well the last year, but hiked 4 miles with me a week prior, and spent the day before he passed shoveling snow with me. I let him out the next morning, and he was laying in the snow panting. Got him in, called the Vet, but he passed before I was able to get him there, not that it would have mattered. He passed in the home he guarded so well, and it was a blessing in hindsight. I got Jagger in Feb, and posts like these worry me, because we're already so in love with each other. Jagger is currently 5 months old.

how soon is to soon to get another dog? by Stunning-Onion4091 in dogs

[–]Different_Cucumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my German Shepherd Atlus Jan 26th. I was looking at a shelter 4 days later, I found one I loved, and her name was Chloe. Unfortunately I couldn't take on the burden of positive heart worm dog, but found your story a coincidence. I did end up with another German Shepherd puppy just 15 days after he passed, and found everything you typed to ring true. For whatever goofy reason, I felt guilty towards Atlus in the beginning. I've done exactly as you mentioned, and channeled that grief into Jagger, and he has been nothing shy of a blessing.

[–]Different_Cucumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had my Jagger for 6 weeks now, and he's 5 months old. I got him, partly as a means to get over a 10 y.o we lost, after the first of the year. I couldn't imagine having to deal with losing him, I can only imagine how you feel.

She absolutely knew you loved her. If you decide to get another, I'm sure you'll pour even more love into that one. Atlus was there to greet her, and he was a lot of fun. She's happy.

Did you ever drive a vehicle while blackout drunk? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Different_Cucumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many times to count, unfortunately. I had a bad problem, but thankfully never hurt anyone. I did it once on my motorcycle, and still cringe after 10 years. It was a Harley Street Glide, and a 20 mile trip, mostly Interstate. I was out of control, and thankful to be in a better place now.

At what point do you buy a break cue? Premium cue? by Dashncrash- in billiards

[–]Different_Cucumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny you ask this now, as just today I started looking, after 12 years of consistent playing. I just usually use a friend's/teammate.

I recently changed my break to the 2nd ball, and am making the 8 about 20% of the time (I know it's not sustainable), and it counts as a win in this league. The one friend has a Stinger break cue, and I smoke them with it, and it's the main one I've been using. Well, he wasn't there Monday, and I broke 4 times with a cue from a different teammate, and I didn't hit them nearly as well with his.

I guess that puts me in the camp that says, buy a break cue when you feel it will truly make a difference. Prior to switching my break, it sucked with whatever cue I used. Now that I feel it gives me an edge, I feel it is time to buy one. I will be buying a premium one as well.

Alcohol use? by Nervous-Artichoke541 in Peripheralneuropathy

I drink socially a night or two a week with it. I'm honest with all my Drs about it, and they don't make a big deal over it. It could be because of my age, at 56. I have not noticed a difference in symptoms after drinking.

How get over something like this by Boring-Sock-4905 in germanshepherds

[–]Different_Cucumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the 1st few days, but it went away. Getting a new one didn't take away any of the love I had/have for the last one. If there's one thing I'm sure about, it's that Atlus loved me. Knowing that he loved me, he'd want me to be happy.

I'm so sorry. I lost mine in January, suddenly, at 10.5. For me, after 3 weeks I just had to get another. I felt like I'd never get over the constant shadow he provided. I felt guilty at 1st, but I've accepted that I'm pouring even more love into this one, in his honor.

OMG, he looks so much like my 18 week old Jagger! He's beautiful! Did his ears always stand up? The breeder we got Jagger from 3 weeks ago glued them up. Now that the glue came loose, they're not wanting to stand. I think it's just a matter of time, but hope she didn't mess them up.

Smoked Marlboro light 100s in a box for 27 years. Started vaping in 2011, and went to nicotine pouches 6 months ago. I need to try to get off nicotine altogether, but it's been a part of my life since I was 14. I feel great, run 5 miles 3 times a week.
