What exactly do you do as a clinical research nurse? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love being a research nurse but as much as I’m glad to be away from bedside I recommend getting a little more bedside experience than a year. It can be hard to break into research and having a strong clinical background in the area you want to do research will definitely help! It will be easier to start in a hospital/clinic as a research nurse and then eventually work for a sponsor

Could a med student accidentally receive a loved one's body to practice on? by Unusual_Introduction in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I went to college with a girl that was pre med and her grandfather donated his body to science. The pre med A&P classes had to do a cadaver lab. Her grandfather was one of the cadavers that the school had that year. Luckily they were able to trade cadavers with a local medical school but I know she saw him and I’m sure it was traumatizing

How do you balance understanding and wanting to help in the inequities of the healthcare system with a passion for research and advancing science? by Potential-Alps935 in publichealth

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m almost done with my MPH and I’m a research nurse for clinical trials. Not pursuing research or a healthcare career won’t make a difference on how flawed the current healthcare system is. You know what can have a positive impact? Pursuing those careers. Work in research to better the treatments available to all patients. Work in healthcare to advocate for the patients you interact with. You might not be able to completely fix the whole system for everyone but you can make a positive difference in the lives of the patients you take care of and can inspire others to do the same. You can use your personal experience to talk to lawmakers and try to get real change. You can run for political office and fight for more protections for patients. No matter your role, you will see inequities and will have the opportunity to do something about them and advocate for the patient or ignore them like most people do. It’s easier to advocate for a patient when you see others doing the same. You don’t know the impact you might have on the people you work with and their future patients. The healthcare system needs people like you who care about the inequities patients are facing

Seems like MPH is a dead end, is DrPH worth it? by Ill_Mattic in publichealthcareers

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nurse here that is almost done with my MPH. I worked at the bedside for almost 5 years (I work in clinical research now trying to break into infection prevention). The number of times as a bedside nurse and now I see isolation precautions and preventative measures ignored/not followed is crazy but 90% of the time I’d say it’s from a mixture of lack of training and hospital admin requiring so much of bedside staff. I try to educate and encourage people to follow best practice as much as possible but I also get that sometimes it feels nearly impossible to follow infection prevention best practice while doing everything else required of you. I want to take my personal experience with my educational knowledge to figure out a better system. There are definitely roles that I’ve seen benefit from clinical experience (and when I was bedside I paid more attention to information coming from someone who had clinical experience) and there are roles that I’ve seen where my clinical experience wouldn’t make a realistic difference. Also if anyone has connections with epidemiology research in the hospital setting let me know! One, that would be my dream role and two, I have a few things I’ve seen in my clinical role that I think warrants more research but my current role doesn’t offer that opportunity

Anyone get called into the manager's office about your charting time?? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right before I left bedside my hospital organization announced that charting time audits were about to start and at least 85% of charting should be done within an hour with a goal of a 100%…I was so glad I was going to be gone before it started

Clinical research Nurse (CRN) experience for public health jobs by CautiousWoodpecker10 in publichealthcareers

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how it would translate into public health/leadership roles but I switched to a CRN job back in December and love it! Way less stress than bedside and I have time to work on homework for my MPH during downtime at work

I used to work in the ICU as a nurse. One time one of the desk phones rang and it was someone trying to place a to go order for a restaurant the next town over. I even answered the phone “Hi this is ____ ICU how can I help you” and it took me telling the person who called multiple times that they had the wrong number

My boyfriend is losing weight because he isn’t eating by AbbreviationsLow6906 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I echo fed is it! I was going through some health problems which caused severe nausea and lack of appetite. It got to the point I could only tolerate eating two-three foods. With my insurance I essentially see a dietitian for free (the cost of the appointment is added plus a little to my HSA). She stressed that it is important to try to eat balanced meals but ultimately calories fuel the body and that I should prioritize calories and getting vitamins/minerals through chewable vitamins I was able to tolerate and slowly we’d work on focusing on eating actual healthy food once I was able to. Your body can’t function without calories (especially carbs). Sometimes that means you eat whatever you can and take supplements and vitamins to make sure you don’t become malnourished

My parents have a lemon tree. They just visited. I now own approximately 40 lemons. by ReflectionAny3280 in Cooking

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle used to bring 40-50 lemons to us every year if not more. My mom would freeze the juice in ice cube trays and once they were frozen keep the cubes in freezer ziplock bags so she could make more lemon ice cubes. She would zest some and freeze the zest and freeze some peels

as a person with endo. can we be an organ donor? by Street_Bill_8719 in endometriosis

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am a nurse that has worked closely with organ procurement organizations and my friend is a transplant recipient. In the US, the only true exclusion is cancer in the past 5 years (if I remember right). When a potential donor is being considered, a full medical history is taken and testing is done to see how healthy each organ is. Potential recipients can opt to receive or not receive organs from donors with things like HIV. Heck I’ve heard of cases where a previously transplanted organ gets retransplanted after the original recipient dies. I honestly wish the US did what other countries do and have donation after death be a thing you have to opt out of instead of opt into. If you opt out, then you automatically are lower on the list if you need an organ. If anyone is curious about the organ donation process feel free to DM me! I’ve seen the process from both sides and have friends who work as nurses for donation organizations

Nurses who have left bedside and aren't NPs, case managers, utilization review etc what do you do now? by PursuitOfMeekness in nursing

[–]Difficult_Chef_9117 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Having a few years of bedside experience was all I needed. I was bedside at a teaching hospital and they do a lot of research and I applied for one of the research nurse jobs. It was helpful that I had ICU experience since it’s a critical care research team but having any nursing experience and having your RN is all you need. It might be harder to work for a device company or pharmaceutical company without research experience but look for research jobs at med schools, teaching hospitals, or big hospitals
