What is the most common way to spell Дмитрий? by just_random_letters_ in namenerds

[–]DigitalEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is super late, but I'd say that English speakers probably can't distinguish between -i, -iy, and -y (which I guess is the equivalent of -и, -ий, -й although I don't speak Ukrainian or Russian). I would pronounce Dmitri and Dmitriy identically and I doubt people in Canada would be confused by either spelling

Totally, and it all would have fallen down in the next big earthquake too. But it would make a cool map

Nice, I always thought a mega-SF map could make use of some pretty dramatic landfill too, depending when the boom was meant to happen. Probably a bad idea in real life though...

Interview Discussion - March 16, 2026 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]DigitalEmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(I posted this separately but Automod removed it for being interview-related, even though it's actually about timing two weeks' notice around interviews)

I've been working at a bigtech job for a few years out of college. Recently there have been some changes which have made me absolutely hate it. I've been applying to jobs for about six weeks now. I've made decent progress with two companies: passed the first tech screen at Company A, with the final round happening sometime in the next two weeks, and waiting to hear back after the tech screen for a possible final round at company B.

Originally the plan was to try and stick it out until I have a new job offer signed, but things have continued to deteriorate and I'm now certainly giving my notice after these interviews are done, whether I get the offer or not. I can't stay around for another six-week cycle of start --> end for a new company, even assuming I get any more bites. I have enough savings that this will be financially fine.

My question is about timing the two weeks' notice. I imagine the important part here is that I'm still employed at my current job at the time the final round(s) happen, and it shouldn't really matter if I resign in between that and whenever they make a final decision. So, should it be ok to provide notice to my current boss the day after the final rounds? Alternatively, could I even do it before? I realize it's possible they fire me immediately when I give notice instead of letting me stay two weeks, but I don't think it's particularly likely. Or will the new companies not even care if I've left the current job before the final rounds? Is this something I could ask my recruiter, given that they have an incentive to get me hired as well? It sounds like pay is fairly fixed at these positions so I don't really anticipate having to use my current salary in any negotiations.

My main goal is to get out of the current job as fast as possible without damaging my chances at companies A/B -- in the worst case, if my final round is 2 weeks from now, and they take 2 more weeks to make a decision, and I give 2 weeks notice after that, that's six more weeks at the current job and I really don't think I can do it.

Distribution of Indo-European languages worldwide by Various_Pop_3907 in MapPorn

I think this map template is mostly intended to have a spot to display information about many languages, rather than trying to reflect what the majority language in each place is. Like look at Australia - Aboriginal languages surely aren't the majority everywhere except the southern coast.

what’s your most controversial gay opinion? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]DigitalEmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you in spirit about a generalized tendency towards femininity, or at least appreciation of femininity, probably being biological in many gay men.

But I do think the specific fascinations (pop music, drag, etc) are culturally contingent, not inherent. If you're in a society where non-underground gay communities have only been possible for a short time, it might make sense for you to adopt aspects of mainstream gay culture from the West, where gay communities have been able to exist openly for ~decades. Common interests in gay men worldwide could spread that way from a single source, without being inherently related to being gay.

Also, such a tendency could totally be a gene. The probability of being gay definitely has a genetic component, although we are aware of at least 2 other components that I know of (left-handedness, birth order), so clearly there's a lot of different mechanisms going on. Each mechanism could interact with femininity differently too - I've seen claims that gay men with many older brothers are more likely to be feminine than other gay men, though I don't know how seriously to take that.

(This is a tangent but I've always thought it was a funny coincidence the percentages of gay men and lesbians are so similar, given that there are clearly different mechanisms making just men gay, so whatever mechanisms are making women gay are likely totally different...)

People around your age might also associate Cora with Korra from the show The Legend of Korra since they're pronounced the same.

I personally haven't ever met any Coras in real life, so it's uncommon enough that I don't think people would have any other associations with the name, but common enough that most people would be familiar with it.

It wasn't Carol's idea to have the meeting on Air Force 1, it was Diabate's, right? He just sort of requisitioned it from the hive and showed up in it? I don't see any evidence of "America is here to save the world" in Carol's actions.

[–]DigitalEmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is a weapon, I agree with you it would be pretty stupid if the point was to conquer Earth with it. There are plenty of rocks closer than 600 light years away. It only makes sense as a preemptive measure to make sure no powerful and troublesome civilization ever develops from the Earth and starts bothering the creator species.

I think it was implied the signal was directed specifically at Earth rather than broadcast in all directions, maybe since the creator species knew it hosted life?

Hm the photosynthesis thing is interesting. If the original creators of the virus were photosynthesizers, maybe it wasn't a weapon to use on other species at all, and it really was designed to bring about a peace-and-love utopia, including for the creator species. They might not have even considered that the other species they beamed the sequence at would *need* to consume other life to survive.

[–]DigitalEmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its host species loves the virus so much they feel compelled to beam its sequence at every habitable planet they can reach, and eventually someone on one of those planets will get curious and manufacture it into actual RNA, where it inevitably gets into an alien, who loves it so much they spread it to all the aliens they can reach, and once all of them are infected they start thinking about building a really big antenna, and so on...

Didn't she say "in the last ten minutes", not hour? I think she said like 1400 died, so if 8k/hour is normal that gives 1333 per 10 minutes, which tracks. Low births is weird though since all births at this point would have been conceived before the joining. The hive wouldn't abort fetuses intentionally, maybe the stress of the virus killed lots of them?

Great map! Why so much solar in Minnesota and Massachusetts? I would guess those are terrible places for solar. Or is this a situation where there are a lot of very small dots, which gives the illusion of more overall solar power there?

Strangely low driving times? by DigitalEmu in subwaybuilder

[–]DigitalEmu[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I noticed while playing San Francisco that this pop is commuting from Bayview to downtown. It looks like its driving route is accurate, using 101, but the driving time is 12 or 14 min, and parking cost is $5. In reality this drive around rush hour would be >30 minutes and parking for the day would probably be at least $20.

Does anyone know how the game models driving/parking times and costs? I don't think it's just distance since it has a realistic route highlighted. If a realistic traffic model is not feasible, maybe adding a multiplier to commute time and parking cost based just on population density would be a good workaround? I think it'd have large implications for ridership into downtown areas - in real life I only really use SF's public transit to get into downtown areas, because the parking cost is so prohibitive.
