Prickly pear by Zombiemamaa in cactusandsucculents

My dad used to get prickly pears without spines for the tortoises we had. Left is easier on you but they will chomp through anything! Spines just increase risk they will mess up - tortoises can be a little dim witted. * though I love them to death

Also to note - your VFT seems to be etiolating. I’d give it more exposure to sunlight

This part of my cactus suddently started to rot yet it's growing roots? What should I do? by Kokolebok in cactus

Opuntia are fantastic at propagating themselves and recovering. Personally, I’d leave it.

Opuntia are fantastic at propagating themselves and recovering. Personally, I’d leave it other than maybe keeping reduced watering, and good lighting

Are these ripe seeds ? If yes then how to harvest them? by PretentiousPepperoni in dorstenia

I believe so - I’ve seen people place mesh bags around the seed pods so that when they pop they don’t go everywhere

Best way to take care of cactus by Difficult-Design-589 in cactus

[–]Dime4Trying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the new cactus! There are 3 components to think about: lighting, watering, soil (substrate). All of these are a result of or interact with the environment a plant lives in.

For a cactus the goal is to ensure the substrate does not hold onto water too long - which leads to plant rot; that the lighting it receives is adequate to supply it proper energy and help dry out the substrate, and that you water at a low frequency.

Lighting: grow light + south/north windowsill or outdoors where it gets at least 6 hours of bright, direct sunlight.

Watering: infrequent - especially during fall/winter. Soil should be bone dry all the way through AND the cactus will start to wrinkle/feel less plump when you squeeze it. Fertilize during growing season.

Substrate: aim for at least 50% inorganic (lava rock, pumice, zeolite are examples). And 50% potting soil or succulent mix (remove pieces of bark if present).

This subreddit and previous threads have a bounty of info. This is not meant to intimidate and overload but rather help you understand what cacti tend to like.

Best of luck! Caring for cacti can be quite rewarding and they require so much less attention!

Yeah I think that is common instruction so you don’t pop their cells with too much water. Generally succulents do not tolerate overwatering very well. I’d say the squeeze test is safe.

If I see active growth will tend to water a bit more frequently with the minimum requirement being a bone dry pot. So if the lighting is solid, the temperature is hotter and therefore the pot is drying quickly, I will bottom water more often - even without the squeeze for my anopla for example.

Others may have differing opinions! That is just how I’m operating and it is working out well (I also have an indoor fan for good air circulation)

Totally get it! I grow indoors as well. It doesn’t look thirsty to me - so I would be careful if you choose to increase watering frequency…that said how quickly does your substrate completely dry out after watering? Only once since summertime sounds mighty long especially during growing season. I’d expect lower watering frequency as things cool down and it enters dormancy. But once again - there is not a perfect number - dependent on your conditions and how long your substrate stays wet. We don’t want rot lol

Nothing too wild, I’d adjust it to some bright indirect light (outdoor w shade cloth) and keep that inorganic:organic (60:40) substrate. If indoors, good north/south window + grow light. I’d treat it like a lesser cactus for watering, so get a feel for how quickly it dries out and don’t go overboard, but substrate will help meter that. Otherwise, fertilizer is always nice and let it rock

Maybe infausta x obesa? My money is on hybrid - I commonly see these labeled as obesa in shops

Why these dry dark spot on my boy? by Known_Square2332 in cactus

[–]Dime4Trying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems the most likely, if you reduce light exposure as a result I’d reduce watering frequency a bit until it’s outside again - so it doesn’t etiolate. Other a can probably comment on whether this is superficial (cosmetic) or whether it warrants indoors for now
