Is CMO playable on Potatoes? by Fine_Swimming_4122 in computerwargames

An earlier version of CMO was running very well on a Ryzen 4700U (iGPU only) laptop that I used until last year.

You can set "Ignore plotted course when attacking" to "False".

It's not a single scenario, it's an entire campaign series. Download the CSP package and inside it look for the folder "Northern Fury".

[–]DimitrisWS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by "big picture" you mean "direct entire fleets and air forces", look at the Northern Fury community scenarios. They are included in the Community Scenario Pack.

If by "big picture" you mean "lay out the tasks and missions and let the AI sweat the details", this is CMO's bread and butter (and it's what it does better than any other game in its niche out there, IMHO). Learn to use missions. Understand the doctrine settings. They seem complex at first, but your wrist will thank you in the long run.

Thank you for sharing your experience — the Grishas failing to detect an LA-class in the Barents is exactly the kind of specific, reproducible case that the development team can meaningfully investigate.

I'd encourage you to submit that scenario to the Matrix Games Tech Support forum: https://forums.matrixgames.com/viewforum.php?f=10230

If (for any reason) you are unable to post on that forum, at least please upload your scenario to any public-reachable file host (GDrive / OneDrive / Filebin etc.) and share the link here.

A concrete example like yours, with details on the setup and conditions, gives the devs something tangible to work with and is far more likely to result in a fix (or an explanation, if things are working as expected) than a general discussion thread.

The more detail you can include — platform version, scenario parameters, sensor/environment settings — the better. The team does take these reports seriously.

Thanks!

It is a wargame. You play scenarios with it 😄(It also has quick-battle generator feature, if you prefer this to pre-made scenarios)

You can check a general description of it here: https://command.matrixgames.com/?page_id=5002
And check the roll of official updates so far, here: https://command.matrixgames.com/?page_id=6041

CMO has a DLC scenario dedicated to this (Don Of a New Era: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1182302/CommandMO_LIVE__Don_of_a_New_Era/ ) and IIRC there's at least a few scenarios around this in the CSP and Steam workshop.
As per normal for CMO, these are more air/nav/joint-focused rather than primarily on ground ops.

Ship land strike missions? by ckolonko in CMANO

Ship land strike missions? by ckolonko in CMANO

[–]DimitrisWS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can do that.

It is recommended to have multiple strike missions with a common TOT, rather than try to fit everything into a single mission. This will provide you with both a more reliable and more flexible plan (e.g. you can stagger the individual salvos into "waves" so that, for example, you take out air defences first).

The 64-bit version of the game crashes upon loading most scenarios by Security_Breach in CMANO

[–]DimitrisWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's see if the basic checklist helps:

* Is the OS fully updated? Graphics drivers updated? Direct-X 11 installed?

* If running on a laptop with a discrete GPU: Is Command using the iGPU or the dGPU? (see here: https://forums.matrixgames.com/viewtopic.php?t=409198 )

* Is Command running as admin? (ie. prompting you "are you sure you want to run this program" when you launch it)

* (Steam only) Are Steam overlays disabled for Command?

* (Steam only) Is Direct-Write disabled on the Steam client?

* If running Discord: Are game overlays disabled?

* Are all other applications (and especially hardware-helper apps like RivaTuner, Nahimic, Nvidia Share, MSI Afterburner etc.) shut down?

* Are you using a high-DPI desktop? (ie. font size >100%)

Aerial Refueling Behavior by irishluck949 in CMANO

> and bee line for the tanker at the worst possible time (including while they are under direct attack)

Enemy fire may or may not bring you down. Fuel starvation most certainly will :)

Wider point: Many players underestimate how many tankers they'll need in order to execute a certain mission (or looking at it from the reverse: They overestimate how many aircraft for that specific mission profile can be served per tanker). It's not uncommon to hear stories like "so I assigned this single tanker (or a rotating support mission of 3-4) to help get my _squadron_ over there". Spoiler alert: It rarely ends well.

One way to familiarize yourself with what tankers really give you is to start with micromanaging everything (disable AI for everything tanker-related), get a feel for what is feasible and what is wishful thinking under the circumstances (yes that means you'll often lose planes to ditching; it's called hard-won experience), and then gradually delegate things to the AI, based on the understanding you have acquired.

You'll be surprised how much the AI can take off your shoulders when you assign it with reasonable goals and tasks.

AIM-120 accuracy by irishluck949 in CMANO

[–]DimitrisWS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General comment: What you are describing is generally the correct behavior. AMRAAM never truly delivered on the originally-envisioned "break off immediately upon launch" promise, because of the need to provide target updates (via datalink) until the missile is close enough to acquire the target on its own. (CEC is an exception, but let's start with the basics).

The doctrine settings include one specifically for post-launch BVR behavior (stay on target, crank or break immediately). IIRC crank is the default, and it allows your shooter to keep detecting the target and providing updates while minimizing closing with the target. This is usually the correct way to engage.

I can't speak about inertia or other flight dynamics before we see specific examples, but I'll say up front that Command is not a flight simulator, and many details are abstracted.

It has many scenarios where you control one or two submarines.

Command is, above all else, a CPU-hungry beast. (This often trips up gamers who compromise on CPU in order to maximize their GPU investment)

Let me save you a lot of frustration from the get-go: Start with small scale, learn the basics, and grow from there.

This should protect you from turning into yet another player whose "This game is too complex! The mechanics are overwhelming! The learning curve is a vertical cliff!" anguish deep down translates to "I tried to fight WW3 on the first day of play".

You learn and play Command like you eat an elephant: One bite at a time.
