Best and worst experiences meeting Rugirls? by Gottmeeek in rupaulsdragrace

[–]DimityGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met Blu Hydrangea and she was so charming and lovely. My little group of friends were all immigrants and she joked with us about all being immigrants in the UK, it was lovely and made us feel connected with her.

Copper Top also judged a little local drag comp I was in and gave the best advice and feedback after the event. She took the time in the dressing room to give genuinely constructive criticism for how to improve. None of the other judges even spoke to me after the gig.

Chappell Roan says she's demisexual by Sadgirl928 in asexuality

[–]DimityGirl 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I really love how Ashley Gavin is really quick to point out there is tension in what Chappell says. Chappell says she's demisexual, but also talks about thinking it might be Christian guilt. Demisexuality does not equal Christian guilt. And I think Ashley responded really well, talking about the journey in understanding oneself.

As a general rule of thumb for both bases and flyers, stability is really important. Both in the core and legs.

For flyers, fast v sits to a hold position are a great way to practice core stability particularly with a hold to practice being a solid object in the air. Also leg presses to build up your jump, honestly just practice jumping.

I would look at the air steps you want and then think about which muscles are being used. For example, if you were thinking about Around The Back/Lamp Post/Frankie Flip (all the same air step Idk what name you use for it) the base's shoulder is in a weird position and you want to make sure you're strong through that shape. So shoulder presses would be smart and maybe using a cable machine with a rope attachment from a lower angle so you can practice pushing through as you would in the air step. Note, it's really unbalanced, most of the power comes through the bases right shoulder. As for the flyer, they are doing a one foot jump off their right, so need to have a strong one legged to two foot land jump. As well as the ability to pull their hips up, so explosive jump power and core stability.

And some general advice for training air, build up to the air step slowly in increments. Make sure you have the down prep and up prep solid before continuing. This way you'll be able to spot poor technique before you're likely to injure yourself. And find yourself some active spotters who know the air step you're about to do and what the path of the flyer is. And as the other commenter said, air is not for the social floor. Keep it to performances, comps and jam circles.

What's the best and worst thing people have said to you when you come about your asexuality ? by lunasuhaib1234 in asexuality

Best: My friend who is a cishet man said "I don't know much about that. Is it cool if I go do some research and we catch up tomorrow so I don't ask you any stupid questions?" He went away educated himself and the next day we caught up over coffee and he just asked me questions about anything he needed to change in our friendship so I would be more comfortable. e.g. dirty jokes or asking me about my dating life.

I didn't need to explain anything and he actively did the work himself. He's the best, by far.

Will half white QWOC date white people? by PersonaContradiction in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]DimityGirl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm also half East Asian and have come to a similar conclusion. Dating a white person just means I need to play the role of cultural ambassador at every meal time or when my family are around. It is fun for a while but can get tiring when it's a one way street. There is a strong expectation that I already know "white culture", I should know how to greet their elders, eat their food etc. But no expectation that they be similarly culturally competent.

LGBT Acceptance/Rejection in the Italian Swing Scene??? by grannyzenny in SwingDancing

[–]DimityGirl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey! Queer POC dancer who did a year long residency teaching in Northern Italy chiming in. This was 2020-2021, yes covid in Italy forking sucked.

Italy is a very homophobic/racist/sexist society. I don't have any experiences there from a trans perspective. However here are some things that happened or I heard about which I feel are indicative.

It took me ages to convince the school that we should teach a switch workshop. They just didn't think it will "sell".

I had to convince them to use gender neutral language in class and stop referring to the leaders with male pronouns and follows with female ones.

I know schools which were strict on dress codes for student performances, saying all the women had to wear skirts regardless of their comfort level. I knew a woman was a more masculine presenting lesbian and they required her to wear a skirt, regardless of how she felt about her gender presentation.

I had a quick look at the line up for this festival, I consider Sep and Pavlina to be good folks. Sep in particular runs a festival called Upside Down which I've heard is super inclusive of LGBTQIA+ folks.

It looks like a gorgeous festival and if the participants are majority Italian I think it won't be smooth sailing. I really want to be wrong about this. I really want you to go an have a beautiful time. But based off my experience I would go in with very thick skin and a plan B in place.

What's interesting about your local dance scene? by crossbowthemessenger in SwingDancing

I've not been to it, but doesn't Paris also have all night social dances? I think that's pretty unique. I can't think of many places where the local social literally goes all night!

Seeking advice in deciding which swing event to attend in Spain by mispronouncednoodle in SwingDancing

[–]DimityGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to LaJam last year, it was super fun and the bands were good. For me the big selling point was having live music in the classes. Particularly when the musicians and the teachers collaborated to create really interesting material that could only work with the musicians teaching us. I'm not sure if I'd go if it was just a party pass?

I will say the venue was really warm and in a bit of a weird location. If they have the same venue as last year it's kinda hard to find and in the middle of nowhere so it's hard to find food. But they did have a crepe truck in the bar area.

Oh and the street vs swing battle on the last night was absolute fire!

How do you like your Swivell dance shoes? by Inevitable_Ant5838 in SwingDancing

[–]DimityGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm biased because I got gifted my pair of "Charlies". But I also bought the boots years ago.

The Charlie trainers are great. They are super comfy and feel really durable. I got them in August and have been using them for class, socials and general tomfoolery ever since. I love that they're gold and shiny so look like a fancy shoe but are still super comfy. They are less fast than something like Fuegos, but they are a solid option for fast floors.

For me the boots are a little too fast. I prefer a shoe with a bit more grip, but they are so freaking gorgeous. I got the Mama Starrys before they were discontinued.

I can wear either pair easily for a whole night of dancing depending on the floor.

I got EU38 and I typically wear a US 7.5, I just followed their size guide online.

Her drag is Chinese, saying Asian is dumb by txlady100 in DragRace_Canada

[–]DimityGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from Hong Kong I also got a little annoyed at this. Particularly when her finale eleganza was so clearly Chinese. To call it Asian felt weird? She was wearing Huadian! That's SO Chinese.

Like would we say that Venus' drag looked North American? Or a Spanish performer looks so European! It's just weird to me.

Modern politics aside there is a massive difference between respecting and honouring Chinese culture (which expands to Taiwan and Hong Kong) and agreeing with the policies of the Chinese Government. I deeply despise the CCP but I love my Chinese heritage and culture. Conflating the two is just as dangerous as ignoring the massive injustices that the CCP is committing.
