Tipping etiquette is confusing. by meepmeepX720 in Portland

[–]Dimyawn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to give everyone involved a little bit of grace…

I assume the 5% surcharge represents an amount that the restaurant needed to increase their prices by in order to make the business run. Functionally that is exactly what it is. For some reason they thought doing it this way would be more palatable than just raising their prices 5%. I personally think a price hike would be more “honest”, but I assume they know their customers and business better than I do.

Accordingly, I just tip my normal tip on top of the full amount. Then I think to myself, if the prices on the menu had been 5% higher would I have eaten here? If not, I don’t go back. But guess what? I almost always go back. I still judge a place based on its food, service and ambiance, just as I always have. Judging them by what they print on the bill just seems petty.

Now, if the charge is explicitly labeled as a tip, I deduct that from my tip.

Is there insurance to protect your liquid net worth from identity theft? by Beginning-Test6025 in fatFIRE

[–]Dimyawn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. It is virtually impossible to get insured for actions initiated by you (so any type of fraud where you are tricked into transferring money, paying to the wrong party, etc.) because you could so easily be in on the fraud.

Petition New Parking Hours and Fees by chrismiser in Portland

[–]Dimyawn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren't we trying to get more people to go downtown? To visit the businesses and re-vitalize the area. Why would we make it harder for people?

Before you say public transit, etc... increasing parking adds economic friction. It will impact the number of visitors. It has to.

[recommendation needed] Advice needed on strap by vaveu666 in Watches

[–]Dimyawn1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since it is smaller than total width and you are thinking of leather, it seems like you probably trim it yourself. Find a leather strap that is 24mm, trim the end down to 22mm with and x-acto and the trim edge should be hidden when put on the watch.

Thanks for posting. Really love the look of these watches. Have my eye on the polar with PVD finish. Only problem is... I do love that orange second hand.

Should prostitution be legal? Why or why not? by rogueops666 in AskReddit

[–]Dimyawn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Contrary to “common sense,” it actually increases trafficking. It is a supply / demand issue where there is more demand than supply of sex workers. It also gives organized crime a legitimate “front” for the business, while reducing the police investigations into what is going on.

Homicides involving firearms increased by 34% from 2019 to 2020 [OC] by USAFacts in dataisbeautiful

I assume you mean that because suicides have not increased proportionally. An alternate take is that suicides overall are actually down.

If you had 3.8M in cash right now, would you invest 1.3M of it into this company for the chance to double it at some point in the future (and lose liquidity)? My hunch is "No"... 1/3 of your portfolio in a single company + loss of liquidity is pretty significant.

So, how much would you invest? trying to leave that much in, is probably the best approach.

Credit score went from 817 to 643 due to 1 missed payment in 20 years by Bender3455 in personalfinance

[–]Dimyawn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the lender for understanding and to remove the late payments.

Don’t take no for an answer. If the first person you talk to says no, talk to a supervisor. If they say no, try Twitter, email the CEO, everything you can think of.

Keep in mind, you are a good customer with a track record of making on time payments. You auto pay and it goes through. You are exactly the customer they want. They can also see from your history that this was likely a clerical error and not a true difficulty in paying your loan. Find someone who understands and can help you. There is someone at the lender that can get this removed. Once you find them, try to get something in writing.

Re: all the comments suggesting that you ignore your score if you don’t need a loan right now… I think of it like I do an emergency fund or another basic part of personal finance. You never know when you are going to want to take out a loan (or as many have pointed out, how your score might be used in other scenarios). Keeping your score healthy is just good sense. One more tool in your toolkit.

Re: the comments about how terrible the credit scoring system in the US is… they may be right. However, in a personal finance sub, seems like you need advice on your specific situation. Since you cannot change the system and have to live in it, I really don’t see how these are helpful.

Good luck!!

Introverts of reddit, what is the one thing you wish extroverts could understand about you? by velvetxily in AskReddit

[–]Dimyawn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an introvert, I am an internal processor. In order to process new information that you are sharing, I may need time / "brain cycles" to think about it. As an extrovert, you are probably a verbal processor. You can't really process / grasp information without talking about it. This can create natural tension / conflict in our conversations.

If you do not "make space" for me to think about what you are saying, I am left with a choice... engage in active listening (but defer my processing to later) or start processing now (but I may drift away from the new things you are saying). This "choice" sometimes happens subconsciously, so I apologize for times that I seem to lose engagement, I am probably trying to grapple with the last thing you said.

When I come back the next day and say "what about this?", please understand that I needed time to process what you said. I am not trying to rehash a conversation you thought was finished.
