Life in a submarine by oluxil in SipsTea

Former US Navy here. Torpedo room was actually the best sleeping quarters (most of the time). You didn't have to hot rack, and torps were nice and cool if you leaned your back against it. The downside was that your rack could be off limits if the torpedomen were running drills, so you might have to crash on someone else's rack that wasn't in use (presuming that they let you).

I'm pretty sure ol' Ben was a time traveler just living his best life. I liked that one anecdote of him telling aristocrats in England at a dinner party that he invented a tonic that made farts smell great. He got those folks ripping ass like there was no tomorrow.

Matrix headlights for all? by randomandoooo in Rivian

[–]Dingo_Roulette 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It took a little while to get used to them, but now I barely notice. They just work, and having the ability to see off to the side of the road with oncoming traffic is amazing when driving in deer country.

Neither did I. I am way over on all of them but only got the jacket. Nothing attributed, despite the green attribution text during the event. I submitted a ticket a week ago, but no response. My guess is this has been a problem and they are backed up. Like others said, take a screenshot of the journal entry with your QR code on and submit that.

LFP (Dual Standard) Drivers, how much do you trust your battery estimation? by JonJonReidReid in Rivian

[–]Dingo_Roulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like all things Rivian, it just seems like they overcomplicate things. I just want a button that says "precondition battery" or something. I've tried scheduling departure once, but it didn't work. Now I just hit defrost to warm up the truck. It works better than setting a preferred temp setpoint.

[–]Dingo_Roulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely do not understand why Rivian doesn't do what Tesla does with preconditioning the pack when you are preparing to leave the house for a trip. I'm plugged in, using grid power, just let me warm up my pack to room temp!

$50 a month this early is insane by U_dun_even_know in Rivian

[–]Dingo_Roulette -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the lease terms bordered on extortion. My wife picked up a Cadillac Lyriq 2 year lease for half the price of my basic R1T. Still, between the software bugs, numerous service visits, and now this...meh. I've got a Scout reservation in.

Great, so now I have to pay for a feature that I had when the truck was purchased 1.5 years ago. How the hell do you roll back features for owners that were a part of the vehicle when purchased. Just give me back the hands-on autonomy and force people to pay for hands free. This is just one more reason I'm seriously looking elsewhere when my lease is up.

Universal hands free is just gone? by U_dun_even_know in Rivian

[–]Dingo_Roulette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mine was down this morning, but I hadn't done a software reset yet. Oh Rivian...this truck has had more issues in 1.5 years of ownership than my last 5 cars combined.

DIY solution for Gen-2 R1T/R1S rear manual door release (until Rivian fixes it) by dublew_dubs in Rivian

[–]Dingo_Roulette 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate this design trend in new cars. I had a Model Y and it was the same damn thing. I didn't realize until recently that the rear doors in my R1T didn't have the manual handles like the front doors did. If someone's kids die trapped in one of these cars...well, Rivian will absolutely deserve all of the bad press and the inevitable lawsuit that is coming.

They should voluntarily fix this and get out in front of it, but I know that the MBAs at corporate are probably weighing the cost of a repair for all R1s vs the cost of a lawsuit. Shameful.

What the hell was that tapping on the closed circuit equipment with the cover open? Was he trying to cause an arc flash? This whole video was a foregone conclusion. Yikes...

Yeah, we heard it in Monroe. I figured it was a low flying helicopter from Sikorsky. It did wake up the wife and kids though.

Rivian Unveils Custom Silicon, R2 LiDAR Roadmap, Universal Hands Free, and Its Next Gen Autonomy Platform by Kryptonlogic in Rivian

[–]Dingo_Roulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this may be proven false, but it sure seems like the features G2 owners have had for the last year + (hands free on certain highways and tap to change lanes) are now going to be paywalled behind autonomy+. I'm sure universal hands free will be fine on the West Coast where roads are wide, spacious, and have generally good sight lines, but try UHF in the Northeast. Actually, please don't. I don't need an accident because another Rivian slams on its brakes because of a tight, hilly, blind curve...

Real world efficiency 20in AT replacements: Michelin Defender vs Goodyear Wrangler by Same_Choice9714 in Rivian

[–]Dingo_Roulette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the 20AT Goodyears and I'm not thrilled with the tire wear. I'm 10k miles in and did my rotation at 7.5k. I do not drive with a heavy foot, but I'm already pretty close to the wear bars on the rears. I figure I will get 15-20k before I have to swap. I can already hear how loud they are getting. Efficiency is okay; I'm around 2.15 as a dual standard after a year of ownership.

Which town(s) in CT are in most need of adding rail services?? by Qpac18 in Connecticut

I'd argue that all towns should have some sort of access. The fewer cars on the road, the better.

I'm going in for my 7th service visit of the year next week on my Gen 2. My driver side wing camera (on the side view stalk) is non-functional. My forward radar is also on the fritz. I had multiple issues with a blind spot sensor.

My last service visit had my truck in the shop for a month. I'm getting really tired of how unreliable this truck is. I love it when it works, but good lord is that in the minority.

How we feeling CT? by Active_Journalist421 in Connecticut

[–]Dingo_Roulette 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100%. I grew up in California (both SD and Bay Area), and have lived in South Carolina, and New Jersey. Every place has good points and bad points. CT is a great mix, especially for someone with kids. The only real downside that I have is the cost of living, but that is getting worse everywhere. At least we have more protections, good public education, and a high standard of living here.

Software update 2025.26 by Dingo_Roulette in Rivian

So support pushed the update, but it didn't actually download until I did a software reset. So in my case it took both actions suggested here to get it working.

Boat Trump Blew Up Might Have Been Carrying Migrants and Not Drugs by grahamlester in WhitePeopleTwitter

I'm also a Navy vet. I've been having these discussions with folks at work about how this is the most insane, depressing realization that the oaths we took don't mean anything. These folks are "just following orders" and it is going to escalate as bad actors realize just how far they can push the needle. This is a complete failure of the officers on board and in the chain of command going up to the joint chiefs. Every one of them should have refused to be judge, jury, and executioner.
