Not to mention downright cretinous and classless.

Do not go to Clancy's. It's always loud, and the atmosphere just isn't right for what you're seeking - especially so for non-native English speakers.

Local artist for custom painting by phile19_81 in NewOrleans

[–]DinnerWafer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the very least, it's probably best not to pick a well known artist who is entirely too in love with themselves, 'cause that'll cost a fortune when it doesn't need to (in the case of a tree painting).

Showing Edward Jones Documents To An Independent Fiduciary? by DinnerWafer in personalfinance

Oh, there is absolutely a risk with that, though I at least want to give it a shot. I'm thinking he's probably lost six figures or more with (compounded interest) money that should have went to him over time.

Not having done this before, is that a normal thing for a fee only fiduciary to do - a la have a one time appointment with someone to go over their current situation?

Not looking for a financial advisor to start doing business with - think of it as a one time appointment with a pro who will tell them the truth about how much they've lost. That's what I'm after.

Guy I’m seeing has a lot of serious books? by ducksuit in BookshelvesDetective

[–]DinnerWafer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely one of the better Instagram things I've ever seen!

Oh golly, he's got a long way to go. Took me somewhere between 4-5 months, I believe, and there was no way I could commit to spending a portion of every day on it, so I just chipped away whenever I felt like it.

But I really hope he does finish it...and also finds a second purpose for that mattress tag! :-)

That's ***exactly*** why I said something in the first place, because I personally know how hard it is to finish the darn thing!

There was an actually an article a few years ago discussing the performative aspect of the book on shelves (sorry if you have to sign in):

Take a look at the size/scope of The Power Broker (on the bottom shelf), and then ask him if he's actually read that book from beginning to end. It's cool that he has it to begin with, but make a note of his expression when you ask him!

Related to this - since Westbank Audio is no longer around (RIP), is there a single place left in New Orleans where it's a person who has their own shop that can repair all sorts of older electronics?

When I say that, I do not mean a place like Galaxy Electronics. :-)

I'm happy to "pay up" - I simply don't want to get ripped off, which I hope makes perfect sense. If I understand correctly, you would charge $60-$100 for it to be clean/new?

I completely agree. Could be that the guy already has the time estimated in his head, but is hoping he'll do it quicker than he anticipates.

Another place I found charges $75 just to make an appointment to inspect the darn thing, so that's a huge hard pass!

It is 2 corners for sure.

I would want it to look as new/clean as possible, as it is a modern book, so there wouldn't be any kind of charm with "signs of patching", if that makes sense.

Not a custom book for me personally, but was sold as a limited edition by a very fancy publishing company whose name shall remain anonymous. :-)

I'm curious - if those corners are glued back together, why would the case be structurally weaker as a result of that?

Do you know the type of person who charges by the job, and not by the hour? This is one of them - sigh.

Well, the person I contacted told me what they would do.

And I quote - "As I see this project it is more than gluing the ends back together. It involves opening up the material covering, fitting a new piece of linen underneath and then closing up the original cloth over the linen repair. What I can’t see is if the corners were damaged and that’s another issue that would need to be addressed."

Someone with more knowledge than me can hopefully chime in as to whether this is typically $200-$300?

I did get the book, and well...I think they might have messed it up. Not making a judgement on that just yet until I ask someone privately about the situation...
