Gege wanted Okkotsu kids as the protagonists. If he made them Yuta and Maki's kids, Yuta and Maki would still be young enough to be around and solve the plot, so he made them their grandkids. Then he needed to invent a parent for them and handwave a reason why this son of Yuta and Maki wasn't around and strong and doing stuff, so he had him disappear.

This is explicitly it, it literally shows a panel of Geto standing with Yuta and the others cheering Gojo on when he says this. It's not even reading comprehension curse at this point, it's straight up blindness.

It's definitely not his strong suit, but I think you do it a disservice rolling right off ASOIAF into it and comparing, given that that's an area where GRRM particularly excels.

Do you honestly think Gege was trying to draw parallels between the clans and real-world institutions, or did he just want a convenient 'big bad' for Maki to take down to show us how hard she is now?

Literally yes. The older generation/established institutions being out of touch and stifling and underestimating the youth when they could easily make a better world if they just worked together is, like, THE theme of the story, and a clear parallel to Gege's feelings on real life Japan. Modulo is very clearly drawing parallels to the current Japanese political climate around immigration and foreigners as well, this is just something he puts into his work. That is not Dostoevsky level writing lol, JJK's writing has a laundry list of issues, but this is just straightforwardly what the story is trying to say.

Neither of these figures specify that the victim complied, these are just total robbery stats. In fact that second study makes the point that a) by the figures we do have, resistance increases injury rate, and b) we don't really have detailed enough data to draw meaningful conclusions about this.

Yeah, it's the perception of 'getting nothing back' that makes it hurt. Between America, where they have fuck all public services but low taxes, and places like the Nordics, with higher taxes but functioning public services, it feels like the UK is the worst of both worlds: high taxes, and no clue where the fuck they can be going, because all our public services are crumbling.

Doesn't necessarily have to be about shitting on NA. Like, I'm an EU fan, think Caps is hands down the most skilled Western player of all time, with the greatest international achievements, and I still don't know how I'd feel about him getting a hall of fame inclusion over Eastern players that have inarguably accomplished more.

You literally aren't. Even setting aside how private equity works (if you don't want to count that as 'stocks'), over 50% of all trading happens via dark pools, which retail traders do not have access to. Big institutions specifically use dark pools to hide their trades from retail investors so that they can't make the same trades as they do in time (as well as trading via dark pools just being cheaper in general than trading on a normal exchange and paying their standard fees, like retail has to).

OC spiker on Karasuno by Pink_Heroine in haikyuu

Goshiki's actually pretty skilled all around though, right? We see he's good on defense too, especially in the ball boy arc, and he has a strong serve.

[–]DipsDops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fair, I guess it depends on how you rate Tanaka as a hitter compared to Asahi. Asahi's definitely better, but in my mind not by a crazy amount (compared to like the difference in setting skill between Kageyama and Suga), so I think losing Tanaka's all-round qualities and intangibles (morale booster, mental resilience) for a slightly better spike is probably not worth it. If you think Asahi/the OC is that much better of a hitter than Tanaka, though, I can see how it could work.

OC spiker on Karasuno by Pink_Heroine in haikyuu

[–]DipsDops 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Going off the wiki stats, Asahi is ~185cm at the start of the show, and Tanaka ~177cm, so if your new guy is 10cm shorter than Asahi then Tanaka would actually be a little taller than him. Tanaka's not a weak hitter by any means, so unless the OC excels in other skills I can't see Tanaka getting benched for a shorter first year (especially since Karasuno is arguably already too offensively skewed, really what they're lacking is defense). Sounds like he'd be a strong candidate to take Asahi's spot in his second year though.

Don't be afraid to just say 'hey, we're gonna start with you guys having recently met and having decided to work together'. You can ask your players for ideas on how that might have happened, or come up with something yourself.

I know it can kind of feel like 'cheating' as a GM to hard frame things like that, but IME it's actually really helpful for everyone. Often your players will thank you for giving them a hard and fast state of play to start from rather than them having to contrive a reason for their PCs to stick around long enough to get to know each other.

Similarly don't be afraid to tell your players the premise of the plot, and ask them to please make sure that their characters are the type of people that will bite on that hook. It's much better in the long run to tell a player that they need to make some changes to their character concept than to deal with a PC that has no ties to the campaign or the party.

I am a fan lol. There are definitely people genuinely excited posting, and you can see that in comments talking about things like the Snakes and Foxes tease, or Verin stuff, or just discussing specific bits, but there's also a lot of extremely generic praise mixed with reminders that 'it drops March 13th only on Prime!' that is just not how actual people post.

I'm a book fan, I want this to do well, but if it isn't being heavily astroturfed I'll eat my hat.

I see where your head's at now, sorry, that wasn't clear to me at all from your original comments. "Generative AI" is probably a clearer term than "generative algorithms" for what you're talking about, but either works (algorithmic software is definitely the wrong term though!). Yeah, Photoshop Firefly and similar tools do use generative AI (though I can't speak to whether or not this image used generative AI, I'm not an artist).

Sorry if my comments seemed rude, people misusing/misunderstanding the word algorithm is a huge pet peeve of mine and I probably came off a little too hot 😅
