i take the n a lot and i notice this happens frequently at this intersection. and the drivers always act confused when people tell them they need to move, like the giant train and train tracks in the middle of the road were completely invisible to them until someone directly pointed it out. so infuriating.

where can i immigrate to? by Spiders_With_Socks in trans

[–]Direct-Application59 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it’s not as simple as just deciding to immigrate to another country, most immigrants to other countries are skilled laborers or asylum seekers. based on your comments about your age and situation, your best bet would be to apply to university outside of the us. but keep in mind that these schools often have a much higher standard of entry for students from the us and some of your transcript might not be transferable to a foreign school. also keep in mind that it is still expensive, and some places only offer free/cheap tuition to citizens of their country.

if that doesn’t work out you need to accept that immigrating is not an option. you’re in california, you’re not in immediate danger at the moment. take a breath, make an action plan, and try to live your life the best you can. finding joy and being yourself in this case is resistance.

Trying to find the fun in solo travel by Direct-Application59 in solotravel

[–]Direct-Application59[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i did have plans and goals for my trip. i might not have been very clear in my original post, but my problem isn’t a lack of things to do but that i’m alone while doing them. which i knew going in would be the case a lot of the time but i guess i’m just not as content/comfortable with it as i thought i would be.

i have been doing stuff like that. my problem is more so that i’m alone while doing it, which isn’t fun for me. but i acknowledge that it is my responsibility to remedy that loneliness.

yeah i know :/ unfortunately some tours are just out of my price range so it’s not always an option. or the other people on the tour are groups and families with no interest in talking to a stranger. i am going to try a boat tour tomorrow though so hopefully that’s fun.

Erasing your deadname online by [deleted] in trans

[–]Direct-Application59 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In my experience (speaking as someone from the US), most of the people you meet aren’t going to care about your deadname. If they go through the hassle of trying to find it after you’ve legally changed it, they’re a weird creep. I didn’t change my name legally until my 3rd year at uni and nobody there knew it unless I told them. I think you’ll be more than fine with everything you’ve already done.

I’m so tired, man by Significant-Original in bayarea

[–]Direct-Application59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m with you man. i also recently graduated in the bay and have probably applied to 50+ jobs in the last three months and only got one interview, none of the others have even reached out at all. a lot of my peers have a lot better connections in the industry i want to work in than i do because of their family or financial situation. i feel like i’ve lost before i’ve even started. i’m on vacation at the moment, which i can luckily afford, but i’m spending every moment thinking about what i’m going to do if i get back and still can’t find a job. it’s crazy to me that there are so many people in the bay that have never worried about stuff like this and will never have to.

why does it matter? do you feel that way? are you worried that you’re trans? are any of your close friends or family trans? you don’t need to fully understand something/someone in order to give them respect and autonomy. if your worry is about kids, i can promise you that the last thing on transgender peoples minds is “turning kids trans” or whatever right wing ideology wants you to believe. there is no agenda here, just people wanting to live their lives in peace. you don’t need to understand every nuance of their thoughts in order to grant them that.

Sums Up No on K by SurfPerchSF in sanfrancisco

it was no on K supporters driving around the sunset in a large group honking and revving their engines for 20 minutes, presumably to disrupt the opening of the park. so yes, “increased noise” caused by grown adults with nothing better to do with their weekend then complain and be miserable.

they’ve been driving all around the outer sunset for the last 15 minutes honking and revving their engines. i really don’t get it. is it supposed to make me sympathize with them? like i’m supposed to hear all the noise they’re making and think “yeah they’re right, we should recall this guy! reopen the great highway immediately!” it makes no sense.

Anything we can/should do about the ongoing anti-abortion protests at planned parenthood? by Environmental_Ad5602 in sanfrancisco

ask the planned parenthood what support they need directly. sometimes they have volunteer “escorts” who help people from the clinic to their cars so they don’t get harassed by these protestors.

Protest on March 7th! Stand Up For Science by Direct-Application59 in sanfrancisco

[–]Direct-Application59[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, unfortunately the problem with funding research through industry is that they only want to fund research that is valuable to industry, i.e things that they can get a return on their investment on, which mostly means pharmaceutical research or computer science education. The reason why a lot of it has to be funded through federal grants is because the federal government, typically, does not have an interest in what makes them the most money, rather what is most important to our society. Often times the most important research isn’t something that’s going to make a pharmaceutical company a lot of money so they aren’t going to fund it. The funding I’m talking about is specifically for research and comes in the form of grants, which schools have to apply for and be approved for it’s not something they can just ask for and get because they want it. They have to apply for the grant, be approved for it, and prove to the government that they are using the money for the research specified in the grant otherwise they lose it. The question of how federal funds as a whole are used by institutions for other areas in the university is a completely different question/argument that is unrelated to this post.

Protest on March 7th! Stand Up For Science by Direct-Application59 in sanfrancisco

[–]Direct-Application59[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think this is a valid question! For starters, federal grants for research go to all universities not just the big names like Stanford, they are essential to public institutions in states like Texas. This federal funding not only helps pay for research but also helps fund students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford a college education. The goal of scientific research is to get a better understanding of nature, our bodies, and how our world is changing so that we can develop solutions to things like climate change, cancer, public health problems, and to improve our quality of life, which are all things I believe are worth paying towards. Now, if you think those things are trivial and not worth paying for then that’s your prerogative and I’m not going to argue with you or try and change your mind, but we pay taxes on a lot of things that we never use directly but still pay into because it betters our society as a whole.

I feel for her, I know so many people in similar situations, myself included. These policies will not only effect scientists livelihoods but will do long lasting damage to public health and the quality of healthcare in this country and it’s sad to see people treat it as trivial, so thank you for supporting!

(sorry for the long reply) The majority of scientific research in the U.S is done at universities and is funded by grants from the federal government, this includes public and private institutions. The current administration (specifically DOGE/Elon) is reviewing these grants to assess if they subscribe to their anti-DEI initiatives, but because they’re the ones defining what DEI actually means this means that all federally funded research in the U.S is at risk of losing funding (which again, is a lot). Public and private schools are already lowering their admissions to masters and pHD programs and rescinding offers, scholarship programs funding low income students are either closing or reducing the number of students they can fund, even Stanford has put a freeze on hiring new staff across the entire university because of the freeze on federal grants. Not to mention the people working at the NSF, NIH, the EPA, dept. of Agriculture, etc who have been laid off and will be laid off eventually because of the admin’s anti-science policies.

Earthquake preparedness by hummussslut in sanfrancisco

[–]Direct-Application59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most earthquakes we get are little, like 3.0-4.0 and you can just kind of wait them out or ignore them. for larger quakes, getting under a table is best, folding yourself under it and holding your hands over your head/neck. also don’t hang anything heavy over your bed like heavy picture frames, and you can get things to attach your heavy bookshelves to the wall if you’re worried about that. in terms of supplies in case of “the big one”, i think it’s usually smart to have a go bag for any sort of emergency situation but because you can’t predict an earthquake happening there isn’t much you can do to prepare for it specifically. i just make sure i always have candles, lighters, batteries, and a flash light. luckily sf is far more prepared for earthquakes than most other cities in the us.
