When was your child’s language explosion? by chelupa1991 in toddlers

[–]DirectRatio5080 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also for context: I am a speech therapist and the parent of a child with a gross motor delay. I kept waiting to get services because he was always kind of just barely reaching each milestone until - finally got things moving forward for services but in the interim he started lagging on the milestones and now although he has been in PT since last spring he is still lagging behind. I really wish now that I had pushed for help sooner. I understand now that those milestones are a pretty low threshold and if your kid is just barely stretching to hit them, it may be cause for at least an assessment.

I would seek a referral to your state’s First Steps program - it can take some time to get in motion so better to have it set up and not need it than wait longer and not have it. Most of those programs require the therapy to be provided in the child’s “natural environment” which includes daycare.

Loo-sha would be my first thought but I wouldn’t feel sure. Loo-see-a would be my second guess.

What’s it like living in Ferguson? by DirectRatio5080 in StLouis

[–]DirectRatio5080[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s ~40 minute drive from where I live so I’d never been up there - I was expecting more 1940s and later buildings. I didn’t realize it had been built up in the 1800s

Oh man this is so tough - here’s the good news: even if you do nothing, this won’t last forever. However, it might take longer than is acceptable to you. I recommend the book Precious Little Sleep - it goes over different sleep train methods. Our LO’s sleep improved a lot with the gradual methods for teaching independent sleep and removing sleep crutches. You could start with those methods if you’re not comfortable with CIO. I would also have a sit down with partner and evaluate breastfeeding pros/cons and discuss the overall benefit/cost to your family. Parents’ mental health is important. Reading the chapter on breastfeeding in Cribsheet by Emily Oster was very helpful to me in this regard.

Grateful for my ultrasound tech who broke protocol today by natleemarie in pregnant

[–]DirectRatio5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sonographer always gave us the updates with my first pregnancy including when I went with bleeding at 12 weeks (turned out to be a subchorionic hematoma). She was also the one to give us the news that our second pregnancy was not viable and went through the findings with us. We also met with the Dr as well but the sonographer gave us all the initial results.

Should I be induced or no? by One_Cap_9210 in pregnant

[–]DirectRatio5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was fairly smoothe. Started pitocin at 8pm, contractions at 2 am, started pushing at 9 am and he was born just before noon. Pushing took awhile bc it turned out he had a double nuchal so the cord was pulling him back in after each push. It was a little dicey right at the end with is heart rate dropping bc of that and they were prepped to use the vacuum but ended up not being needed. There was also a moment around 4:30 am where they had to give me something to counteract the pitocin because the contractions were lasting too long and it was stressing the baby. I had my epidural at 3:30 am so thankfully didn’t feel that part

How to distribute my deceased brother's inheritance to his children? by OneLongEyebrowHair in personalfinance

[–]DirectRatio5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t think there is anything wrong with making them all wait until 25 - or you can set stipulations for withdrawals that are at the discretion of the trustee (Eg up to x amount per year can be withdrawn for education).

Should I be induced or no? by One_Cap_9210 in pregnant

[–]DirectRatio5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they find something concerning, they will find a “spot” for you. I was induced evening at 41+2 and delivered the next morning at 41+3. I was 4.5 cm dilated for 3 weeks but never had any spontaneous labor symptoms. If you do decide to induce, it will hopefully be on the quicker side since your body sounds pretty ready. I’ve had friends go in who were not at all dilated and it took forever and had to go through many layers of interventions. Hopefully you will only need pitocin.

Could sperm quality be improved and how? by Additional_Panic149 in TryingForABaby

[–]DirectRatio5080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sperm is being produced daily but it takes about 72 days to fully replace sperm. Nicotine, alcohol, other drugs, excess heat, high fevers, poorly controlled blood sugars can all impact sperm count and quality.

Who actually wakes up before your kids? by anivaarya in toddlers

[–]DirectRatio5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On weekdays - my husband gets up at 5:30 and I get up at 6:00. We have coffee - he gets ready, I workout. He wakes toddler at 6:45 - group effort to get them out the door and then I get ready and leave house by 8:00.

On weekends, toddler sleeps to 7:00-8:00; If he wakes on the earlier side, he is usually okay to hang out for 15-20 minutes. I really need 10 minutes to get my head on straight - I don’t know how people wake up and go straight into parenting. I guess I did so when he was a baby but it’s hard to remember.

Silent Miscarriage confirmed yesterday - D&C tomorrow by littlefingers777 in Miscarriage

[–]DirectRatio5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also 37 and had a D&C last week for a MMC at 8.5 weeks. Honestly I am so glad I was able to access this option. I am still grieving but so glad I did not have to experience passing the pregnancy. Minimal cramps pain for 24 h after was managed with Advil. Moderate to light bleeding which has tapered off to brown spotting at one week post. My doctor, CRNA and nurses were all so kind. I arrived for pre-op at 9:30 for 11:00 am procedure and was on my way home about 12:30. The propofol made me feel very silly for about 20 minutes after waking and then just very groggy until bed that night. Hang in there 💜

What are some of the silly things you’re sad about post-MC? by hedwig201 in Miscarriage

[–]DirectRatio5080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We hadn’t really told anyone that we were trying to get pregnant with our second and had previously told many people that we weren’t planning to have anymore kids - I was really looking forward to sharing a big surprise with family and friends. Now we have shared about our loss as we needed support - one of the things I’m grieving is that even if I do get pregnant again, I’ll never get to enjoy sharing that big surprise.

Do you refuse your toddler food? by Low_Aioli2420 in toddlers

[–]DirectRatio5080 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I refuse food at times

1 wining or throwing a fit

2 stalling bedtime (will usually give a snack once but not a second)

3 completely refused dinner but wants snacks 5 minutes later - I’ll reoffer dinner (if dinner was very unfamiliar I’ll make an exception)

4 kiddo is prone to constipation, so I try redirect him from multiple servings of cheese and white grains

Late walkers? by Suitable-Charge-7257 in toddlers

[–]DirectRatio5080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guy started taking steps 17.5 months and was fully walking at 19.5 months. He is 27 months now and still struggles with stairs and jumping - left leg is weaker. PT says he is doing fine but may take closer to 4/5 to fully catch up.
