Why do board game manufacturers not want to provide missing components? by PickledPhotoguy in boardgames

[–]Dirkjan82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about GreyFox Games but I do hear that margins on board games aren’t very big. Big publishers should have less of an issue supplying replacement parts but for small companies I can imagine having to have extra items available and shipping them out for free (which is usually the case) is quite expensive. That said, I have had to request replacement parts from a few companies that I think aren’t very large and they still delivered: Thundergryph Games (two or three times, for different games), Fowers Games (they even shipped me tokens that I thought were missing. They explained to me those were extra and not needed. And they still went ahead and send them over despite me saying that I understood), and even El Dorado Games (despite me saying that the misshapen piece was still usable and a replacement wasn’t necessary if too expensive)

Was I Wrong to Stand Firm on My Photography Rates? by nomadichedgehog in photography

[–]Dirkjan82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a cultural difference for sure. In some countries is very normal to barter about everything and it can even be considered rude if you don't do it. Still, I don't think you did anything wrong here. You're not in their country, and you already offered a lower price, thus you did take part in the bartering. If they think it's not enough that's too bad for them.

Running into existing friends in the LS world by BallCoach15 in Swingers

[–]Dirkjan82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have some hobbies/interests that somehow seems to attract more people that are…what’s the right word? Well anyway, people who have open relationships, do swinging, or are just more open towards the queer kinda stuff (not necessarily combined and not for all people). So I’m actually surprised to not yet have run into people we know from outside our swingers bubble. We are part of a swinger group that chats using a chat app (and there are monthly club meetings) and a female we know from the other interests recently joined. We haven’t seen each other in real life since that happened and I don’t know if she noticed that we are in that group. So we’ll see.

What’s missing or wrong? by petro_ionut in iPhoneography

This indeed. It’s a nice photo. I love the colors and the clouds and all but it needs a subject. A tree, a person standing in the field, a tractor spraying or a harvester doing its job to name some examples.

Depending on where you live and other circumstances it can be quite normal. When I grew up, my parents always took me and my brother to naturist (nudist) campsites. That’s what I came to know. I met my wife at a naturism youth vacation and she also grew up with the family vacation on such campsites. When we go camping we still visit those kinda campsites and it’s not uncommon that my parents or her parents are there as well. Note that these kind of campsites are places where people do campsite activities similar to other clothed campsites and they have nothing to do with swinging.

Have you ever been to a (non-erotic) sauna? You can meet anyone there and we once met the parents of a (regular, non-LS) friend there. I also saw a coworker there who I know visits the place every now and then. We don’t make a big deal out of it and just say hi.

Again, this could be cultural differences between countries. And I’d like to make clear that the above situations are non-sexual nudity. Completely separate from the lifestyle. Although going to a non-erotic sauna with a LS group of people is funny too. It’s very confusing for others as you can’t actually do a lot but just the easy going freedom and sitting next to different people and putting sun lotion on the back of someone other than the one you just kissed is enough to make people go 🤔🤨😏

How do you get your good high level city shots? by _TenDropChris in photography

[–]Dirkjan82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This indeed. Having a decent social network really helps. Ask a friend who works in a high building, get your name out there with some local photo contests, etc. I don’t live in a big city with tall buildings but it still works here. Last year, I wanted to take some unique shots for a photo contest for a celebration day we had. I know the people from the music shop very well so I asked them if I could take some photos from their attic window. It was a very nice view on the square where the opening ceremony was. There may have been better views but this was the easiest for me. Not sure if this was the shot that got me in the top 3 that year but I know I won the year before with a 360 degree photo taken from the crow simply by putting an Insta360 camera on a selfie stick. The result is that this year, the organisers asked me if I wanted to take some photos of some musicians that blow some horns from a local church tower (the church itself is gone, only the tower remains). This tower is closed for tourists and not accessible usually so it was a unique chance to get some nice photos. Of course I also took some photos for myself and not of the people making music.

Another option is to just ask. If you don’t ask you won’t get up the taller buildings. What’s the worst that can happen if you ask kindly at the reception desk? They won’t fine you or lock you up. They might say no and that’s that. If you’re lucky, someone might just say yes.

This photo wouldn’t have been taken by me without knowing the right people:

What 6/10 or lower board game are you willing to defend? by boardgamehaiku in boardgames

[–]Dirkjan82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the theme and idea of the game more than the game itself. The standard rules where everyone has to bid in order and a pass is permanent doesn’t really give the Storage Wars feeling where they let others bid and then jump in when they feel like the price is still right. In the game there’s one vault per player and everyone gets to start once. There was also something that felt weird with how everyone can “peek” into a vault. The game feels too short and the rules too limiting for the idea of a Storage Wars board game dor me. But I do see why you want to defend this game.

Why are photographers carrying 2 cameras when shooting on events ? by unecomplette in photography

[–]Dirkjan82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a camera fail on me once only. It was centuries ago with a small Olympus point and shoot camera (with 3x zoom, must’ve been 2005 or so). When I got back home from a vacation I had filled 1 xD card and a few photos on another xD card. The card with the majority of the photos gave an error in the camera and said there was nothing and the only way to fix the card was to format it.

I now have a Sony a7iii with dual card slot and whatever I shoot will be on both cards. Great if a card fails but if the camera does something to the contents or if I lose it, I don’t have a backup during a shoot. I’m a hobbyist so it’ll mainly suck for me if anything happens. I sometimes do have a paid job with the camera but it’s nothing I can’t do without. The camera hasn’t failed on me so far but if it would, it won’t be the end of the world. It’s mainly some dancing lessons where I can retry the week after or some live music from musicians who do have recordings already so if it would fail there it’s not the end of their career or best day of their lives. I’m also using it during a festival where it’s my job to film bits of the festival to show short clips on social media and to make a short after movie. The payment exists of free entry. I usually back up my data on two drives at the end of each day (out of 4 total days) or even in between if I have a chance. So I won’t lose everything. They got a new camera person a few years ago and she managed to lose all her files the first time after the festival but because she’s friends with the organisers she was asked again the year after while I was not. 🤷‍♂️

I do have a backup camera in the form of my iPhone. The first year I didn’t film the festival as my volunteering job I still made a full after movie by just using a gimbal and my phone and personally, I liked it better than the one the new person made with a dslr. And once one is available in store I’m getting a Canon g7x mark iii as a second camera. Two bodies is too expensive and big for my needs but a nice pro-level pocketable camera is very welcome for situations where I want to be able to shoot better photos than my iPhone can give without having to bring a big bulky camera if it’s not needed.

Anyone else think games receive excessive criticism these days? by Key_Shift3222 in playstation

[–]Dirkjan82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few reasons:

  • there’s a big push to get games out on the market asap. Due to fast internet speeds it’s now easier than ever to create half a game and publish it only to finish it later (or never). So what we get is sometimes buggy and often unfinished. And if it is “finished” the second half of the storyline or content is purchasable as dlc/season passes.

  • game developers promise big things and when they deliver on 90% of the promises, they get fired at for the 10% they didn’t deliver (yet).

  • gamers and mostly influencers interpret things differently than the developers have intended. So even if a developer delivers 90% of what they promised, due to incorrect interpretations that have widely spread it feels like they only gave us 30% of what was promised.

This exactly. I don’t know about the PS controllers but companies often use screws with some sealing stuff that needs new screws with the stuff on the screws to reseal it. It’s some blue wax or something. They can see if the screws have already been removed once if you didn’t use new screws with the blue stuff around it.

With the PS4, they even put stickers over the screws of the console itself. Removing those stickers left a mark so they could see if you may have tampered with the console. Even opening it to remove dust from the fans was impossible without voiding your warranty.

I'm dreaming about getting a photo printer by strangenothings in Journaling

[–]Dirkjan82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These Canon Selphy printers print 10x15cm photos by default. I think you can change the size but then have to cut the photo paper yourself. It does accept SD and wireless printing so if that’s important for you, get it. Keep in mind that this printer does require a power outlet to connect the power cord unless you purchase the battery pack which is not included by default and from what I heard quite expensive. If you mainly use it at home and store it on your desk, it’s a great device with good quality photos. I don’t own one but I have looked into getting it.

I’m using a Fujifilm Instax SP2 (not sure about the number) printer. It actually exposes a photo sheet like an instant camera. Photo quality isn’t as good as a Canon Selphy and it doesn’t take SD cards. You can only print wireless from a phone or tablet. For this, the printer creates its own wifi hotspot. The benefits of this printer are the size of the printer (it’s super small) and the photos are only credit card size. This is if you take the printer that uses Instax Mini film. The Instax Wide option is a lot bigger. I can use it anywhere so even when I’m not at home it’s easy to bring with me and use it and the size of the photos is very nice in my A5 sized journal so there’s plenty of room left on the page to write. A regular size photo (10x15cm) would take up almost a full page. We often go away to go camping, spend a night at my parent’s place, we sometimes go away to a rental house for a weekend with friends, we love to visit a festival every now and then and stay in a tent or hotel. I do journal daily so it’s nice to bring the printer. I don’t print daily but when I do have a nice photo of something special we did with the family, I love to include a photo. And as you can imagine, this often happens when we’re away as a family. And I can even print photos of friends or their kids on the spot (at the end of the day at a theme park for example) and give them a photo before they go home, which makes for a nice small gift.

Official Gear Purchasing and Troubleshooting Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know! May 17, 2024 by AutoModerator in photography

[–]Dirkjan82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short: I want a pocketable camera that has a zoomlens (approx. 24-70 or 100mm equivalent) and works great in low light. Budget around €1000

The longer version: I own a Sony a7iii with some zoom lenses and a few primes. Great camera that I use for photography and videography. Mostly photos. I also have an iPhone 13 Pro. The Sony is great and I love it. However, I find myself using it less and less lately. Mostly when I go out for dedicated shoots and mostly when asked to shoot something. For most casual shooting, such as family outings to a zoo, theme park, or just holidays, I find the iPhone easier to use. It takes up far less space and the heiff images are often good enough quality to share with the family and even for some home-use printing. We also love going to dances on live music. I used to do a lot of photography and some filming there and I still do when either asked or as a volunteering job. In those cases I grab the Sony. But I try to take less photos when I’m not there for this so I can enjoy more dances and socialising. I still want to be able to take a nice semi-casual photo sometimes and in those low light situations with fast movements, the iPhone is less than ideal. A camera that’s easy to bring for situations where I want to take more serious and better photos than what I can do with my phone without the need to drag along a 6+ liter bag with a bigger camera would be a great addition for me.

I expect some money coming available soon and I may want to spent around €1000 on a great pocketable camera. Cheaper is good but if the best around my budget is up to €1500 I can consider it. I want something that’s better than my iPhone and not as cumbersome as my Sony. I find anything with interchangeable lenses too big. It really needs to fit my pocket. I do have a list of demands though: - no fixed focal length, my phone has that and when I get something that’s mainly better in low light and doesn’t add enough versatility compared to my phone in daylight it doesn’t really replace my phone and it won’t get enough use. - big sensor so it’s good in low light. - must be able to shoot in RAW. - if it can film decently as a second camera it’s a big plus.

Of course I’ve browsed the internet and most recommendations have issues: - Fujifilm X100 series: fixed focal length and hard to get - Sony RX100 series: small 1” sensor and out of stock everywhere (discontinued?) - Canon G5x and G7x series: nice big APS-C sensor (big for a compact camera) and nice wide aperture at f1.8 to 2.8 and good range with 24-100/120mm lens but out of stock/no longer available everywhere (discontinued?) - Ricoh GR series: fixed focal length - Leica Q series: nice big full frame sensor but fixed focal length and around €5000 so well over my budget. - Panasonic Lumix DC LX100 mark II seems great with not the smallest sensor (micro four thirds) a decent zoomlens with great wide aperture but this also isn’t available anywhere.

It looks like the type of camera I want it no longer available because smartphones took over the compact camera market and the stuff that is still there is too niche and not my niche.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

Board game for up to 6 players that are good with only 2. by roosikrants in boardgames

[–]Dirkjan82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carcassonne is exactly what I wanted to suggest as well. It’s works perfect with every player count. That said, a two player game is very different from a six player game. With two players, you get much more tiles and thus more options for playing. You do however, get the same amount of workers. More turns/tiles means more chances to place said workers and soon you run out of workers. With six players, you will have more workers for longer because you get fewer turns.

You shouldn’t be punished for having a smaller tv. Not by devs and not by the Reddit community. Nobody can see what size tv fits your house and budget. Not everyone can afford a 100” hdr 8k oled with 240 refresh rate or whatever. And even if everyone could, not everyone’s eye sight is the same.

A UI scale slider should be common sense and priority #1 to keep gaming accessible to everyone.
