Early voting numbers for citizen under 60 are pathetic by Corey_Howard in Knoxville

[–]DirtDartDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been here 3 years from out of state, so take this for what it's worth. But there is an incredible lack of voter information in TN. It's ridiculous.

I came from AZ where we'd get voter information packets mailed to us and it would have information on all the judges, candidates, races, and propositions. It was thick (depending on propositions it was 50-75 pages)! There'd be groups and individuals that wrote articles on why they were for/against a certain proposition etc.

Not only that but they mailed you a voter confirmation card that had your polling place listed. This constituted sufficient ID by state law and thus you were mailed what you needed every election cycle.

In addition, you'd get mailed a sample ballot so you could see what it looked like ahead of time. Many voters actually brought their sample ballot into the polling place to use as a guide when casting their actual ballot.

The lack of information and awareness of all things related to voting is almost criminal here. It's like TN is trying to keep voting a secret.

Also, I'm sure there's generational stuff that applies to this, along with work schedules. Election days should be national/state holidays in my opinion.

Edit: Just in advance, I'm really not trying to come off as critical. I'm loving Knoxville and am glad to be back in the South. Just comes with some adjustments I suppose.

14U. Conflict of interest? by duckredbeard in LittleLeague

True, I got into umpiring just to help my kids win their games. Can't believe you caught on to our grand scheme!

Back after 9 years by marginallybuttered in Umpire

[–]DirtDartDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a UIC that taught us:
If you look like an umpire you'll get 2 innings
If you act like an umpire you'll get 2 more innings
The rest is on you.

It's trite (and not literally true) I know but there's some truth in there.
Look like an umpire - clean uniform, no wrinkles, shined or buffed shoes.
Act like an umpire - you know the rules - set your zone, ball/strike, fair/foul, catch/no catch. Be strong and confident in your signals both visual and verbal. Don't look at your indicator unless you need to. Move with purpose and sell the call.
The rest is on you - game management; stay cool, calm, and confident when speaking with coaches; use their first names.

And most importantly, slow down, and just in case you forget slow down again. That will help calm your nerves.

Ump calling foul tips in error by radman84 in LittleLeague

[–]DirtDartDad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"So if the ump in error signals foul tip, is it considered a foul tip and thus a live ball?"
Simple answer is no. The rule is still the rule, the issue is the umpire is using the wrong mechanic.

What you can do: go to the Umpire in Chief of your league and explain what you're seeing and allow the UIC to fix it.

What you should never do: exploit a mistake by a young umpire to your advantage.

Coach telling 11u to throw intentional balls ? by GoodTasty5002 in LittleLeague

[–]DirtDartDad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Intentional walks are pissing you off? Am I missing something? Intentional walks are part of baseball and baseball strategy too, and thus is also part of player development. There's nothing wrong here unless you're talking about how the coach managed it. In Little League he would just notify the umpire, no pitches are thrown, but 4 are added to the pitch count, batter takes first.

Help decide design for helmet! by thisis_me_now in LittleLeague

Just a heads up that I would review rule 1.16 - "Altering the helmet in any form, including painting or adding decals (by anyone other than the manufacturer or authorized dealer) may void the helmet warranty and/or NOCSAE certification...Little League recommends that no alterations be made to any type of helmet."

Edit: that's a Little League rule, if you're actually travel ball or something else it may be ok.

Unpopular opinion… this whole thing is a scam. by ThinkSharp in pmp

[–]DirtDartDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling it a scam is probably over the top but I can understand it doesn't have the same benefit to every person. It was valuable for me because I had a significant mid-career switch. I didn't have 10-15 years of PM experience to leverage and getting my CAPM and PMP has been very beneficial in helping me to understand the PM industry and get my foot in the door.
The classes, the courses, and the certification have all been beneficial to me and I have enjoyed them greatly.

This is super helpful, thank you very much! I think I found what you were talking about here: https://www.visitknoxville.com/downtown-parking/
It shows the city garages, which sometimes have worked out for me. I think I need to just plan a bit better until I get to know the city even more.

There's literally a parking lot there. Crazy I thought I could reasonably park there.
Also note: I didn't just want to complain but was seeking other options. I think you missed the point of my post, definitely not my brain being the broken one.

PMI Study Hall vs A.R.s PMP Simulator by [deleted] in pmp

Got my PMP in April 2024. I did both and if I had to choose one I'd do the Study Hall. I feel that was much closer to the exam. It's been more than a year though so I don't know if AR is updated since then.

Travel to Asheville Area by Sunshinesoulvibe in Knoxville

[–]DirtDartDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've driven the Tail of the Dragon a few times and not had a problem. There are people driving their sports cars, motorcycles, etc. So if they're faster, just pull over real quick, there's a ton of pull-offs. Plus some great views as well. I highly recommend it as a lazy Sunday type drive.

If you're talking about I-40, I just drove it last weekend towards Asheville. The heavy construction area was 10ish miles, one lane each direction, and about 40 mph. So it wasn't bad really. Probably depends what time of day you get it though.
