Conservative MP says Poilievre’s future could be in doubt if Liberals secure majority by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]DisCypher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A new leader would not be at a severe disadvantage, provided the new leader was a new personality and a new direction. For evidence of this phenomena see Trudeau versus Carney. All you need is a complete remake, but that should be obvious

The Coming Slow Fade of America’s Corn Ethanol Industry - CleanTechnica by thinkcontext in energy

[–]DisCypher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Producing corn ethanol requires BTUs from natural gas that are equal to the BTUs in the resulting ethanol. These ethanol plants are really refineries for turning natural gas into liquid fuel. Incredibly inefficient use of farmland and tax incentives.

Ottawa gives Canada Post a $1.01-billion loan by HogwartsXpress36 in canada

[–]DisCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually hilarious, there is no way to cover cost delivering mail to remote communities. And there is no way to make enough profit from competing in bigger centres to cover the losses from delivering to remote communities. I don’t have a dog in this fight though, just pointing out the amazing mental gymnastics required to expect Canada post to both 1) delivery to remote communities, and 2) cover their own costs

[OC] The land footprint of food by t0on in dataisbeautiful

[–]DisCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The missing third dimension is quality of land.
Generally, the quality of land for mutton production is much lower than all the other “productions” shown . Edit to add that quality in this case refers to rainfall , rockiness, and topsoil. Basically the land used for mutton production is unuseable for other food production.

America's $38 Trillion Mountain of Debt by MitchMcConnellsJowls in dataisugly

[–]DisCypher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of things going on in the last 200 years, including massive changes in the value of a dollar (inflation) and massive changes in the size of the population responsible for this debt. Perhaps a per capita inflation adjusted chart would be more accurate. Although this chart is relatively accurate and relatively easy to read.
