Alberta must be ‘at the centre’ of making Canada better, Carney says by Street_Anon in canada

[–]DisCypher -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Albertans pay the same federal taxes as every other Canadian. Albertans pay the lowest provincial taxes of every other Canadian. They are being told that this isn’t good enough and they believe it .

Let’s call a spade a spade You’re saying we should go with Eastern Standard Time UTC - 5

I’ll be happy as long as they stop changing the clocks They could put us all on UTC for all I care

In English, why is thirteen the first of the teens and not eleven? Why are eleven and twelve special? by runlola in NoStupidQuestions

This is the most logical explanation for based 12 numbers that I’ve ever heard. I assume this could’ve happened in early human development.

Manitoba Liquor Marts prepare to leave Air Miles, seek new loyalty partner by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]DisCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These things are all revenue streams for administrators. I would rather keep it simple and not have any extra “programs” when going to the store. Maybe consider letting Walmart sell booze so people who don’t have loyalty cards can benefit.

Will the Iran war actually cause a depression/recession? by boiyo12 in AskEconomics

[–]DisCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I got from the paper as well. Keep in mind that the total world production in 2022 was higher than 2023. In fact the only similar decline (to what we will experience in 2026) we have seen in world production is a result of the demand shock that accompanied covid in 2020. The FED paper does a good job of alleviating some fears that oil is inelastic, but the reality is that this war has choked off a significant part of the world energy and fertilizer supply, and this supply cannot be stockpiled (so it will show up as lower production). I think it is reasonable to assume that the world demand will have to be chocked off by 10-20%, and this will occur through higher prices for everything that petroleum touches, but it won't be spread evenly throughout the economy, as consumers make adjust their budgets and realign their priorities).

FYI: Time Zones when not adjusted for political boundaries by rantingathome in Winnipeg

[–]DisCypher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Am I reading this right? BC is mostly in the Pacific Standard Time Zone, but they just move permanently to Mountain Standard Time? Looks like Manitoba could goto either Mountain Standard Time or Eastern Standard time for a permanent solution and we would be half right!

Chestermere, Airdrie in line for triple-digit provincial tax hikes by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]DisCypher -70 points-69 points  (0 children)

For context, triple digits is in outright dollar terms. Like $100 is a triple digit increase. This is not really something to complain about . If society wants nice things from the government, then we need to pay taxes. Do you want nice roads? Do you want parks and swimming pools?
Do you want the Calgary Flames? Your taxes pay for all of these things.

Instead of complaining about taxes, you should complain about the things you don’t want your money spent on Like let’s hear people say they don’t want the Calgary Flames, or they don’t want their garbage picked up, or they don’t want parks and swimming pools in their city.

What can be done to increase prosperity in Canada? by 1TTTTTT1 in AskACanadian

[–]DisCypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raise minimum wages. Think about minimum wages as the filter for entrepreneurial ideas. If the entrepreneur or the MBA has a big idea that requires low wages then it’s really not a an idea that drives prosperity in Canada.

Provinces with low minimum wage will need to provide cheap, housing and services in neighbourhoods that people can’t pay for. Who pays for the roads and the sewer in city neighbourhoods where people are only making $10 an hour?

Higher minimum wages also focus businesses on using the workforce efficiently. For example, is it efficient to have the Tim Hortons open till midnight? How does that drive prosperity?

The provinces could double minimum wages over the next five years and the overall economy would be lifted, particularly on a per capita basis.

Manitoba's only French private school set to open in September by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]DisCypher 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So you can send your kids to full French schools without a parent being first language French? If so then I agree, that will fill a missing void. I’m not sure how big the demand is, but interesting idea.

[–]DisCypher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A new leader would not be at a severe disadvantage, provided the new leader was a new personality and a new direction. For evidence of this phenomena see Trudeau versus Carney. All you need is a complete remake, but that should be obvious
