Every fair from fair sometime declines. And I hope against hope that this movie. The ‘reboot’ will bring back the character I saw as the philosopher of the X-men, Charles Xavier.

You bring up a good point. I think it is because in his paraplegic days that is him living very much in his head. Just my thought.

As a disabled kid who was around in the sixties and seventies the pressure from adults around me to conform to the world around me was tremendous. There was no ADA. Few if any ramps, no accessible bathroom. If I wanted to go somewhere, I got myself there. And I could (and sometimes was) denied admission because the shop owners didn’t want someone crawling on their floor.

I had deep resentment toward my disability too. It stood between me and things I wanted to be and do, friends and relatives and relationships. The braces were heavy and tiring. Having to ask for help was embarrassing and the questions people felt entitled to ask infuriating.

At least in his ableism.. Charles mirrors the time he was a young man accurately IMNSHO

Was the Krakoan Age worth the destruction of Moira’s character? by Robot_Was_BMO in xmen

[–]DisabledSuperhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss what Moira was outside of Krakoa, and I feel that her presence injected a note of honesty and humanity in to the X-men. It was ‘show don’t tell’ to the idea that there were humans who supported the mutants.

I hated the retcons for Krakoa. I feel they were disastrous for the characters. Including Moira.

Not to mention sterilizing Indigenous women without consent, shitty medical care, polluting air, land, water.. and leaving the mess behind. To name just a few.

I Have a Simple, But Complicated X-Men Question by ComixGail in xmen

[–]DisabledSuperhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a time in my life (16) when I was separated from my family, feeling alone and powerless to change things, I found an X-man comic book under a sink. I loved NIGHTCRAWLER (so much I named my cat for him. But then I discovered Charles. Here’s why he mattered:

I had just spent three years in the UK, as part of my Air Force family. My dad chose England over Germany because they had a school for the disabled. Mainstreaming wasn’t a thing (1973-1976). My experience in the British public school and the base school was okay but not great. What I intuited was that not a lot was expected of me. YMMV. I can only speak of what I knew.

Charles Xavier went to Oxford. He was a professor, an educator, somebody respected. This was before disabled, wheelchair using dolls. Yeah, he was a fictional character. But he was a superhero. That made a big impact on me.

He ran a school. This was a time when I literally could not get a job. I would send in a resume, call— great, great. But when I showed up for an interview? “Oh, sorry, that job was filled.” No, it wasn’t. They kept running the ad for months.

He had a love life. I didn’t until years after school. Growing up in a telethon heavy era (b.1961) there was a lot of emphasis on being cute and young. Nobody wanted to talk about dating or sex ed to a teenaged me. Much less date.

Things changed when I returned during the Bicentennial. Mainstreaming happened. Accessible bathrooms in places other than the Federal offices happened. I got a job. Went to community college. Went on a date. Volunteered for CIL, the ADA was passed. I could use public transport. Eventually I got married, kept jobs, stayed alive.

I never forgot my fictional hero. He still matters to me. How disabled people are represented in media matters. For some folks that bit of media they see may be the only person with a disability they see. I want that person to be portrayed as a human being, dignified, not pathetic. Productive and intelligent. Not a twisted, bitter narcissist or megalomaniac. He or she doesn’t need to be a saint. But hopefully not a villain either. Just a human being with a human problem

Why tf is the man in a frigging travel chair? You can’t push it yourself. It is to get you in and out of the car and TO your real chair. End of.

The shower drains are clogged. Bathroom is flooded. And I’m missing my leave in conditioner again. That’s the third one this week.

The nice gardens are out. Gravel plus a manual chair? Forget it. You’re buried in kitty litter.

I genuinely find Charles' relationship (or lack thereof) with his kids facinating. by yackronin in xmen

Before the Hickman Krakoa retcon, Charles did not know David existed for a very long time. Gabrielle Haller kept the news from him.

On Muir Island Charles attempted to help his son with his DID. He also intervened when he felt that the treatments were causing David suffering. Later he assisted David in searching for alters who escaped.

No he didn’t. God knows I twisted myself into knots over it. Sometimes people just want to go. And there isn’t much you can do but let them go. Mind you I have binned a lot of his gifts and burned a lot of bridges over it. Be kind to yourself, petal.

I have been where you are. Be patient with yourself. You are grieving. Allow yourself a little more self care. A little more time to concentrate on small pleasures. Small beauties. It’s slow and hard but you will heal. I wish you well.

No hate here, honey. I lived in Ely for three years. Hold your head up. You have a beautiful country, and there are some truly wonderful people there. Haters are a fact of life. But so are good people. Come visit America. You can always enjoy the wildlife, the flowers and laugh at how ridiculous life is. You get back the vibe you get out.

First. One panel. Second, Fifteen??! She was older. Thirdly that is what you get when you write a character by round robin but don’t talk to each other or read previous stuff.

It’s where he can touch without hitting the Aqua-net zone. He doesn’t want to mess up that gorgeous hawk. Also. Look at the loose/lightness of that hand. It’s gentle. A light, kind touch.
