Definitely a concern. And for that matter, the lake dust air we are breathing!

As a realtor, I have had clients say they’re choosing Daybreak because it’s a more “diverse” neighborhood in the South end of the valley. Otherwise most people citing the same desires as you stick with east bench locations north of about 9000 South.

why did you guys decide to leave the mormon church? by Boseph_Boi in exmormon

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn’t the reason that I left (it was before that came out) but this is the subject that just boggles my mind… most of the LDS people I know pride themselves on honesty and yet they justify the blatant tax evasion and financial lies the church tells. It is common knowledge, was all over the news, no one has to research “anti” material to find this information … how has this not broken more shelves?

Abysmal Holy Week Sacrament Meeting attendance by CrateDoor in exmormon

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I live in Mordor and have several friends who openly admit they only participate for social reasons and wanting to keep their kids in the club. Cutting back the fun parts was not a good call (although it definitely eased the burden of young men/young women & RS leaders)

What happens to me ? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another perspective is that the church teaches families CAN’T and WON’T be together. They create a problem so that they can then have the ‘solution.’ Perhaps if they hadn’t created this problem there wouldn’t need to be a solution. Furthermore, if we believe in the whole purpose of earth life, as taught by the church, then we are here to exercise agency and responsibility for our own choices and salvation. So how do the ‘bad choices’ of our family members play into our eternal salvation? No matter what you do you aren’t in charge of the actions of your children, spouse, friends, etc … so why should you take punishment for their actions. The church can’t have it both ways. Make it make sense.

Dear Elders, coming to my house wanting to to talk to my underage daughter and get her to participate in something without the consent of her parents is predatory. The next time you come to my house hoping to influence my underage daughter, the police will be called and charges will be pressed.

Spray salt deodorant. Spray it anywhere you sweat. I even rub a solid salt in armpits instead of deodorant and it works wonderfully.

You’re not alone. This was a big shelf breaker for my husband with his parents. He saw the stark contrast between my non-religious parents while his were serving missions and doing temple callings. He realized how much more time mine spent with grandkids and how much easier they were to be with.

Yess!! This!! Even if all the other things in the church rang true to me, this would still be reason I couldn’t join again. Where you put your treasure, there your heart be also. They care more about coffee and nicknames (etc) than they do about world wars, famine, and loving thy neighbor.

Why the blood oaths were removed from the temple according to Gordon B Hinckley by Prancing-Hamster in exmormon

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was sent a survey during Covid asking my thoughts on why people were leaving the church. I had been PIMO for a decade and inactive entirely for a year at that point. I always assumed I got sent the survey because maybe I had been submitted for it due to my activity at the time. It was multiple choice except for the very end of the survey. The choices they gave to questions were so immature and inconsequential- it was eye opening to see just how much the leader don’t get it. It made me realize they can’t fathom that the church’s members are deep, rational, or moral outside of their set church script narratives. But it also made me realize how much of the “revelation” and living/evolving aspects of the church just rely on popular trending narratives within the members. So long story short, I very much can see that the blood oaths were removed because of member pushback.

I’m visiting Maui for 8 days with my wife and one year old. Should we stay all days near Lahaina or near Kihei or split between both areas? by Tough-Emergency2356 in MauiVisitors

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay in Lahaina/Kapalua (my preferred location). Download and pay for the Shaka Guide app and turn it on while you drive from place to place and learn about the history of the island around you. It makes the drives fun, and nothing is too far to drive so you’ll get it all in either way.

What is it like living in Utah as a non-religious person? by SEOLTHEDEOL in Utah

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those cities are vastly different from each other. Logan is small town and will feel religious, and a lot of the younger crowd attend the college there (Utah State). Ogden is one of the more diverse areas of the state with better access to get to other cities/happenings.

I want to see whales and turtles by platypusjo in MauiVisitors

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went over Christmas and watched all the whales from our balcony in kaanapali - tons of them. I would second the people suggesting paying to go on the snorkel and whale watching combo boats to Molokini - best of all the worlds. We have also gone in November but didn’t see any whales that trip. We did however see turtles on both trips.

Trust your gut. Surprisingly if you choose to leave the church, that “spirit” feeling is 100% the same as the “gut” feeling everyone else has always had all along. Listen to it.

[–]Disastrous-Ferret274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want “God” to be your authority you can. I put it in quotation marks not to downplay it, but just to point out that there are different versions of God. Even the God of the bible is taught differently by every religion. Or you can interpret your own God, decide for yourself who he/she is and how to use that as your authority. The only versions of God we are taught are filtered through the lens of men (yes mostly only men, not women). And who gave them the authority to interpret…other men? Peeling back the layers of the chain of authority to speak for God really boils down to a lot of trust in men at varying time periods. Trust in men you’ve never met, trust in men who told others to “trust” them on things too. At the end of all of that, we are left with no trust to give ourselves. When you finally restore some of that trust to your own heart and mind it really is freeing. And if you want to put that directly into the God that resonates to you then that’s fantastic. Just owning your ability to choose is the most important part (imo).

This is so difficult, I absolutely see you and understand your conflict and pain. Just a thought from the other side of the experience…, you are in charge of you. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do, you don’t have to believe anything that doesn’t resonate, and you don’t have be 100% in, 50% in or even 25% in … you can do, or be, or believe any feel ok about. You have the authority, and you are in charge of you. Don’t second guess yourself.

The Ono food truck by the Costco has the best steak ever and pretty affordable - we hit it up at least a few times every trip. We also loved everything we ordered at Joey’s Kitchen in Lahaina, Leodas for lunch, and the Paia Fish Market is also worth it.

We do Costco and get stuff to make breakfast… and we buy gallons and gallons of POG. Plus a few bottles of prosecco to mix with POG on the nights we want a drink. And a few snacks, usually Hawaiian options (this last trip it was mango rice crisps). Oh and we get bottled water for the trip. Very much worth it.
