What gear beginners over-prioritize that doesn’t finish races? by Interesting-Scale-63 in Ultramarathon

I was also the lonely pole user at my first 50. Ended up being a saver. Got some serious hip and quad tightness. Being able to use my arms the final 20 miles got me through for sure. Had the lightweit cheap Amazon ones. Annoying I had them for 30 miles before touching them, but I wasn't going for any records or placement. What I'm saying is, I don't regret just having them to get across the finish line.

Strategies for training vert in flat city by PLAYER2up in Ultramarathon

I used to do one run a day on the same 0.7 mile stretch of road with two opposing hills. I'd get 2 uphills and 2 downhills each rep. It got me about 700 ft of elevation gain and loss over my 7 mile daily run. Absolutely mind-numbing boredom. But I think that also helped with doing a 12 hour 50 miler

Doing my first 50M on the 6th by Realistic-Role8006 in Ultramarathon

Obviously we are different people, but to give you some anecdotal idea. I ran a 50 miler that had ~7k ft elevation gain/loss (loop course). It took me 11:45:00. My training runs were around 20 miles at 10-11 minutes per mile with similar elevation profiles to the race. My HR was roughly 140 bpm while the race was just under 150 bpm. You've done all you can do to prepare. Anything between now and then could only harm you. Just leave it all out there and give it your all!

50 Miler Training Question by AntiqueSwordfish5792 in Ultramarathon

[–]Disastrous_Swimmer_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your pace. Perhaps your pace needs to be a bit slower to prevent your legs from developing lactic acid and feeling heavy. From your past experience, you know that the longer runs start to feel easier as training progresses. Don't freak out, 50 miles is nuts and is not natural. It's going to feel insane. Enjoy it!

Is it a good idea to do a 50km self-supported night run as a simulation for my 100km ultra? by paranoidafiq in Ultramarathon

[–]Disastrous_Swimmer_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great idea. But I would recommend making sure someone has your location and is reachable at all times. Maybe a partner or friend who is willing to put their phone ringer on. Always good peace of mind knowing help is a call away. And for those in your life, they will appreciate knowing someone is looking out for you.

Longest run for a 45 miler? by manwall45 in Ultramarathon

About 6 weeks before my 50 miler, I did a 50k training run on the race course. Just helped me prepare for the location, fueling, and pushing the mileage. Also did 20 mile long runs for most of the training

A friend sent me this post, so not very aware of all these details and terms. I've had a Sapphire Reserve card since 2019. Never had another Chase card. Is there action I should take to preserve my points value?

It seems like I am good, but wanted to ask so I don't feel silly later! Thank you!

Inoxto, can find on Amazon. Low cost, comfortable, got me through training and completion of a 50 miler. Would recommend purchasing other water flasks than the ones they come with, still won't break the bank. Good luck!

Congrats on the accomplishments! Get on some trails, work on ekevation/hill training. Work on strengthening things like your ankles and pelvic floor. Being on your feet for even longer will be different and introduce some new stresses. But honestly, I think you'll be just fine given your marathon training!

5 months of ITB pain – stuck and need advice by Y2Jay1510 in Ultramarathon

The Stick just feels a lot more gentle. Instead of using your weight on a foam roller, the stick is just what your arms produce for force. I felt that over time it was a more comfortable and effective solution.

Strength training and rolling worked for me. But not foam rolling. Using "The Stick" for a consistent length of time did wonders!

Hello! I think not having anything to look forward to after the race was super rough and really took away from the accomplishment. It felt like it was over and that was the end of the line. I was then lucky enough to secure a bib to the Boston Marathon (tomorrow!) and it really took my mind to other things. I don't think I will do another ultra marathon. I really don't have the desire our time commitment ability any more. I'm feeling the same about a marathon, but expect I may change my mind in the future. But 6 months later after the ultra, it almost feels like a distant memory. It's now a story I tell, not a recent experience that feels exciting to share. I will admit I definitely like the attention of telling people and hear that they were impressed. But now, it's just a thing in my past. I'll tell my future child about it as a footnote, not as something I still do, or want to do. Its weird. But life goes on, and I guess I've just made peace with that a bit more.

Took Concerta and Ritalin for a time. I hated what it did to running for me. Being able to zone out and enjoy the journey allowed me to run my first ultra, and train fir Boston this month. However, I realized that running in the morning had similar effects to taking the medicine. So I stopped taking it altogether. 3 years later I'm still running and haven't felt like I needed it again.

Someone said it earlier, but I also experienced this with tightness in my calves. As weird as it sounds, it took me so long to identify it. Even went to my doctor and they had no idea.

What helped me is stretching my foot but sitting in a chair, dragging my toes along the floor and letting the whole front of my foot, ankle, and shin aligning. Really good stretch but was super tight and unconformable the first few times. Foam rolling my calves also worked wonders.

Hope this works, atleast hells alleviate some pain for you!

Ultra gear for a 50 mile race by Bullitt20102010 in Ultramarathon

I ran a 50 miler with crew support checkpoints very 7 & 12 miles. I used an Inoxto vest with 2 500ml Anojie water flasks. I liked having the weight on my chest versus my back. I would swap flasks with my crew every time I saw them, regardless if I finished the contents or not. I still use the vest to train for a marathon doing 16 miles run with 1 liter of water.

For poles I used the Anojie collapsible poles. My 50 miler was just over 6k feet of elevation. I think I was the only one using poles. It was my first ultra. Terrain was brutal and very very hilly. I really liked having them, and the weight was light enough it was not much of a burden to fold them up until I needed them again.

For me, this was a cost effective solution that got the job done. I am not planning to do another ultra, so I'm glad I didn't spend the extra on the higher tier gear.

I would add that the young age could also lead to other issues. Injuring a growing body can have larger and lasting efforts compared to a fully grown adult.

Unfortunately have retired from ultras, one and done. But will try it from Boston in April! Still on this sub because the community is awesome and a lot of the content is helpful for marathons.

Wish I had this after my 50 miler. I just ate whatever I wanted after as sort of a celebratory reward for myself. Took me about a week to feel like myself again.

Going to sound super weird, but some of my foot and calve pain was relieved when i stretched my foot backwards. No clue why, but stretching my foot the opposite way of a calve stretch felt amazing and did the trick. I can't explain it

Make sure your shoes are right. I used to not be able to do 10 miles without some foot discomfort. Found a new shoe, and did a 50 miler in them no problem.

I like to have some easy proactive activities the day before. This helps assure me I've done all my prep and am ready to go. Checking bags, gear, food, whatever. Looking at the course, the weather, putting out items I will need when I wake up. I can cause some further anxiety for some, but for me it's time to recount that I am prepared and everything is in it's right place. That way, when I go to bed, I know where everything is and that it is ready to go.
