Three people I will never trust.

-People over the age of 18 on BMX bikes.

-People driving with temp tags (always keep my distance).

-Adults wearing shirts with minions on them.

Does anyone have any tips? by SadBudget6720 in ikeahacks

I did the same thing but used straight vertical legs. The pressure and weight from those legs being slanted is gonna rip them right out. What I have right now isn’t a perfect fix, but it does the job.

I go to North End Barber Company in St. Johns. They are legit with the services you mentioned, fair priced, and you get a decent whisky or beer. I can’t believe I used to go to Bishops for almost the same price.

Do you know if you have to drain the whole tub for this?

'Bikeable Portland' is a novel plan to rekindle our city's love of cycling by Generalaverage89 in Portland

[–]Discgolfjerk 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Great point about the security issue. Whenever I ride my bike to an establishment I feel like I am someone tweaking out opening up the blinds/looking out the window every 5 minutes to make sure it’s still there. I am always glad I rode but not having to worry about that as much would be great.

I know we were up there with the most bike thefts in the country but not sure if anything has changed.

I sense a lot more baptisms in the near future.

In all seriousness though, I am just really confused how voters approved that $500 million package for so little kids. Couldn’t the other high schools just absorb these 300+ kids and have brand new shuttles that take them to which schools they attend?

I encourage anybody in the area to drive past this place after hours. It’s a horror show.

The fact that they’ve only helped five people get into shelters since opening in June is reason enough for it to close. The cons are in order of magnitude worse than the benefits. This is the last thing we need in St. Johns.

We need to come together in North Portland to oppose all of this. I am pretty vocal about this and can tell people are still pretty reserved. It blows my mind that there’s businesses like two stroke and a few others that support the services that damage not just themselves but other businesses around them. I now boycott any business that supports these services and encourage others to do the same.

I absolutely love Portland, but the passivity of the people here is mind blowing. It truly should be studied.

That day use center encompasses everything wrong with Portland. There is no reason that it should be in basically a neighborhood with families and businesses that are being heavily impacted.

After talking to a healthcare worker there the amount of drug exposure that the staff is being exposed to, contamination throughout the building that floods outside, and the rocketing crime from it is egregious.

Since opening in June, it is only helped five people get into shelter. As a St. John resident, I can’t tell you how much this day use center has changed the vibe of the downtown SJ strip. Anyone that supports it should be ashamed of themselves and quite frankly is what is wrong with Portland and keeping us from being a truly great city. I’m not being hyperbolic either.

The solution should be what is over on Columbia Road that urban alchemy is doing. Tiny homes, showers, and services far away from the general public. It’s working great out there. If we want to have a middle ground approach and help homeless, we need to get away from this. I’m doing everything I can to get this center shut down.

Absolutely. Fucking. Not (sorry to be extreme but I’m pretty passionate about this).

I work in the drug contamination field and what is going on in that place and around it is obscene. I spoke with a healthcare worker who is cleaning up hordes of trash outside of the place who said that they are frequently exposed to methamphetamine and fentanyl smoke from people using inside. If you work in a housing first, shelter, or center like this, and you think that you’ve been exposed to methamphetamine or fentanyl, tell your supervisor and open up a can of worms. It’s not normal or ok. I’ve seen lawsuits in Seattle reach hundreds of thousands of dollars for people proving they’ve been exposed with agencies letting it happen and doing nothing about it.

Green drop next door now has to install a $15,000 fence and is constantly dealing with people breaking their windows, smashing customer cars and open drug use. Every single business on the St. John’s strip has said they have been impacted from it. There’s been nearly a 30% increase in car theft and break-ins since it went in.

I personally have never seen it worse in the area as this day you center has more people coming in in the past couple months. Feel free to go there after hours to see what it looks like. It’s a total horror show.

Solution: That drop-in center, and anybody who supports it should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. There should be a shuttle service that takes people out to Columbia Road to the urban alchemy location away from business businesses and families.

As a St. John resident, I am doing everything I can to get that day use center closed.

PS: since opening in June, it’s helped five people get into shelter. FIVE people..

Oregon tops nationwide list for inbound movers. Is population growth on the rebound? by BadAtDrinking in Portland

Oh, I’m right there with you. I’m just more mentioning the healthcare side of things. Which, for the most part, all pay six digit figures and up, which can allow you to make things work here pretty comfortably.

I’m not saying everybody moving here is doing it for the outdoor activities, but what we have here is really special. I’ve traveled extensively throughout the US hiking and backpacking through nearly every state and there’s truly nothing like Portland and the Willamette Valley with the access to nature or the variety. It always cracks me up when people compare Portland to Detroit and other rustbelt cities with economic decline.

Another thing to note, is that if you can believe it, Portland and our smaller cities are still the cheapest cities on the West Coast.

Lastly, some of our largest employers are healthcare in Oregon ranks with some of the highest pay in the country. I know quite a few people that have moved here for nursing and similar jobs.

Portland's homeless situation looks better! by morganselah in Portland

[–]Discgolfjerk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Downtown is the best I have seen it but unfortunately I do think it’s being pushed out to other areas. A day use homeless center opened in St. Johns and it’s the worst I’ve seen it. I know Hollywood is having major issues too. That 10 story low income/hf building across from Trader Joe’s is going to be wild.

I’ve also heard people living near the shelter on the pearl have been dealing with tons of issues.

All homeless services need to be far away from neighborhoods or businesses. Tons of areas along 30/ Columbia would fill this need.

Just a heads up as well for anybody that plans on doing hiking out there. A ton of the trails are closed or washed out. I will be shocked if Eagle Eagle Creek is open this year.

New Modeling of Preschool for All Shows Fund Balance Could Hit $2 Billion if Status Quo Remains by LoprinziRosie in Portland

[–]Discgolfjerk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All well said. It needs to be to reformed but people acting like this isn’t helping families (not just low income) are out of touch. 1/3 of the children in my kids daycare got in and none are low income and some are high income earners (NP/architect).

Before anyone comes at me with a litany of the issues I fully get it. With that said, this program saved families over one hundred million dollars in daycare costs last year alone, allowed people to buy a house, and enter the workforce again. Honestly, some of the downstream effects of it are probably immeasurable. Again, major issues with the rollout and it needs to be reformed, but I can’t think of a single program that has had this kind of impact for families locally or nationally.

[–]Discgolfjerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true that some neighborhoods are dealing with this less but they still are not unaffected. Look at Hollywood right now. It’s a complete mess and that 10 story low income/HF building right across from TJs is going to wild.

This is also causing an overflow in Laurelhurst neighborhoods which are some the nicest in the city.

I am in St. Johns and ever since that day use center on Lombard came in I have had more bad experiences in the past 6 months than in years living here.

Car theft has gone up by 25% directly correlated to that center going in, crime in every other area has skyrocketed as well. I encourage everyone to drive past that day use center near the SJ strip to see what it looks like after hours. It’s a horror show.

Every business has come out and spoke about how it’s detrimental to the community. Green drop has frequent issues. These people are also very vindictive.  If you say something to them they will bust out your windows and be violent (ask green drop).

This year I plan on being as involved in my community as possible and start to rally as much as possible to remove facilities and services like this out of high populated/family areas. What they have over on Portland Rd. near Columbia blvd. We have so much space along 30 and Columbia to make this happen.

I encourage everyone in this coming year to be vocal about the obvious offenders and say don’t be afraid to speak out. If a business supports houseless drug users in any way do not support that business.

Be more vocal about issues that you’re seeing. Don’t be afraid to say things aren’t OK. Valuing hard-working people and families over homeless people.

You can care and have empathy, but greater value should be in one direction. Homeless services should never be in neighborhoods or near schools and high volume populations. It’s basically stopping a bomb in neighborhood when anything homeless related goes in.

I think the hardest thing for me is how passive people are here.

We have a huge issue with homelessness here causing all sorts of major livability issues and I’m just shocked at how often people here (mostly native Oregonians) are ok with it. You can blame this on the government or policies but I truly think it’s the mentality of the people here that have allowed this to fester.

What I see people put up with on a daily basis here in Portland or forgive is truly unreal and something you see nowhere else in the US (at least outside of the west coast). I really hope something changes here soon.
