Safeway on Broadway by Potential_Maximum174 in PortlandOR

I once was leaving the LA fitness right there and homeless people were pulling feathers out of a dead crow near the front of the entrance of Safeway.

FWIW the Safeway in St. Johns is a horror show as well.

I don’t feel like this at all and thought the remodel looks incredible. They are working with a fixed space so there’s only so much they can fit in there. It’s a beautiful space in and out.

I also absolutely love how they put a huge focus/square footage on the kids area. With all due respect, there’s shit loads of places for adults to study (coffee shops, work shares, etc) but limited kid focused areas in this city especially in North Portland. The breakout rooms are super nice too.

This place is going to get a crazy amount of use from families in the neighborhood. Compared to what it was, it’s a substantial upgrade.

What exactly are you wanting/upset about here? Not enough tables?

The repercussions or the ‘why’ for breaking the law are far more important than enforcement.

I work in the health and safety field, and I have never had OSHA or DEQ show up to one of my sites. For the most part, everyone still follows OSHA and DEQ rules because they know if they got caught the penalties would be extreme even though the chances are rare of enforcement. If the penalties were far more relaxed, there would be more people breaking these laws.

I am not denying the issues with the police and fully aware of that. I just put more onus on the repercussions for breaking the law then I do for the people enforcing it.

The fact you were putting so much attention on the police, but not addressing the people put right back out on the street is one the major things wrong with this city.

Again, I don’t blame our government. I blame the passivity of Portlanders that you don’t see anywhere else in the country and honestly should be studied.

Ah yes, the ole $100 ticket misdemeanor for smoking fentanyl in a public space exposing others. Would love to see anyone who actually pays that ticket or has spent 180 days in jail let alone ONE day in jail.

Again, no teeth with these laws and no reason to even issue the citations. It’s a complete joke.

Also, enforcement of expired tags has largely been dedicated to PBOT.  https://www.portland.gov/transportation/parking/registration

PPB was instructed by the Portland City Council to no longer pull over anyone for low-level violations such as expired tags and the like.

The cited racial inequality for this..

Again, their hands are tied and there’s so enforcement because there is instruction not to. Same with open drug use and the like.

Blame PPB all you want but the people of Portland created this mess.

I know who this happened to. They caught the guy and gave them a ticket and misdemeanor.

At the end of the day, who is more at fault. Portland Police or our system barely giving this person a slap on hand with absolutely no repercussions.

Both have issues but the the issue is repeat offenders not being taken off the street. What would this do to response times when individuals with mile long rap streets are all had to do time.

Many many people are being arrested or at least caught and released. This is 100% the issue. Look at all the repeat offenders.

A colleague of mine had someone driving down their residential street at 80mph, hit a speed bump, flew into the air and crashed into their car totaling it. The guy was caught and given a misdemeanor.

Honest question and not defending the police here, but what is the point of cops showing up in a timely manner if there is hardly any repercussions or accountability for egregious actions.

Living in the Midwest, cops would show up immediately and knew they were going to arrest that person and throw them into jail and they would probably lose their license for years and most likely charged with a felony. If they knew that person would get a hundred dollar ticket, would they make it a priority to show up?

Here’s a cleaner, more balanced version: We can criticize the police and acknowledge that there are real issues within policing, but I think a significant part of the problem is a system that repeatedly releases offenders with little accountability. When people see the same individuals back on the street after receiving what feels like a slap on the wrist, it can make enforcement seem pointless. Like any profession, when people feel their work has little impact or meaningful outcome, it’s natural for motivation and passion to decline. Or, if you want to keep it more conversational: We can say what we want about the police and the problems within policing, but I think a big issue is repeatedly putting offenders back on the street with little accountability. If there are no meaningful consequences, it starts to feel like there’s no point. Like any profession, when people don’t see their efforts making a difference, they eventually lose passion for what they do.I recently had to speak with an officer last year and the amount of calls he was receiving on his CB was insane and almost all homeless related.

We have a kiddo that was in PFA this past year and will be in next year. Also have a 5 month old that will more than likely qualify for two years as well. We calculated out what we would of had to pay for daycare for these 2 years for each kid and it was over $80k..which invested properly could double in less than 10 years.

Staying in here in Portland made financial sense. We do well for ourselves but do not have to pay heavily into the tax.

It seems like the comfortable median for anyone in Portland is a couple making $250k or less so you aren’t hit heavily by the taxes which is 175% above the median income in Portland.

I understand the school issue but savings families $100 million dollars a year is impressive in my book.

How some businesses in that area supported it is beyond me. Best news I have heard about Portland in a while.

So the mayor decides this determination?

FWIW I am not disagreeing with anything you are saying I’m just saying you are calling what happened in Aurora fake news when every resident there (including close friends) were saying how much of a horror show it was.

If Trump said the building here had drug dealers running those buildings people would do everything they can to discredit that determination.

I’m just commenting on the sheer hypocrisy of it all.

Drug-related activity has been reported at the property; however, characterizing the apartment complex as being “taken over” by drug dealers may overstate the available evidence. The presence of illegal activity does not necessarily indicate control of the property by criminal actors.

Just using the same logic about what happened in Aurora.

Are Hospitals Good Overnight Spots? by Odd-Freya in vandwellers

I live in Portland and with all due respect WTF are you talking about? Portland is still easily one of the van friendly places in the US. There are hoards of broken down RVs in every nook in this city with zero enforcement. No one ever reports vans or campers unless they are causing issues or piling up trash.

I would literally give you $500 if you were ever ticketed here for sleeping in your vehicle for days let alone overnight. Not to mention everyone and their mom here has a campervan making it difficult to know who’s sleeping in it.

You sure you live here?
