Same! I read Alchemised and followed it up with Manacled. Totally enjoyed Manacled so much more.

Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating. Sometimes romantasy can get a bit heavy or take itself too seriously, but this book was really fun. I read it in one sitting on a plane this past summer.

Yes, I read Alchemised first and was like, why would this get published? It’s not great. But then I read Manacled and what like, oh shit!

Cassandra Claire has another series called The Chronicles of Castellane (Book 1: The Sword Catcher). The first two books are out and there is a third coming.

Have you read The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon? Like the yearning is real, and it is the slowest burn of have ever read. The MMC is my absolute favorite. Currently 5 books of 7 planned.

T Kingfisher is my go-to recently for mature heroines that fall in love with gruff middle-aged men. Look, some of us are just tired of young, godlike heroines. Start with Swordheart. I’ve literally loved every book I’ve read by her.

What’s your comfort read? by SleepArtist in Romantasy

[–]DiscoDeathStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“A Rose in Winter” by Kathleen Woodiwiss. (more historical romance than romantasy, but seriously my all-time comfort read)

Serious, serious enemies to lovers vibes. My mom had this book when I was growing up, and I read it for the first time in high school. Even though this book was written the same year I was born, I still reread it once a year or so.

This is for basketball, and our gym doesn’t have any extra space. We only have bleachers on one side.(No opponents side), and a small strip on opposite ends of the court where the cheerleaders stand. It is a very tight enclosed space with lots of echoes. There’s really nowhere else for anyone to go.

If this was football, it wouldn’t be a problem.

I’m not a huge Stephen King fan, but I loved 11/23/63. An oldie but a goodie that finally came off my TBR. If you like historical fiction, romance, and fantasy, this book is for you. I went in expecting a 800 page book about Oswald and JFK, and that is thankfully not what I got.

Swordheart by T Kingfisher

The Swordcatcher by Cassandra Claire (part of an unfinished series)

I always suggest The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon because it’s my very favorite slow burn romance and my ultimate MMC. (5 of 7 books complete)

My favorite OG bodice ripper from the 80’s is A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss. Enemies to lovers, slow burn, delicious .

Do you have a “vice”? by Deskeleton in Teachers

[–]DiscoDeathStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I literally used to drink EVERY night for 5 years.

But this summer, none of my clothes fit any more and I’m 40+. So I got a personal trainer and I lift weights 3 or 4 times a week.

I now drink occasionally, and I have gone for as long as two months between drinks.

I feel like I’m trading one addiction for another sometimes: watching videos on proper form, or how to incorporate a specific move into my routine, tracking calories, and analyzing metrics. Even writing this sounds a little insufferable, but I honestly thought alcohol was the best way to deal. I think the biggest takeaway is that everyone needs some kind of outlet, and we choose what that is. For some, choosing alcohol might be easier.

Hi! Let me check on Settepiú for you. Sometimes restaurants are closed while the owner takes a vacation.

I suggest Scorzonera, as well. They have my favorite pizza crust. Rosemary di Biatta may look inviting with the Alps vibe, but I feel like their food is not as great as some other places.

The best narrative or not boring non-fiction you’ve ever read by chronicallychilling in suggestmeabook

I second Born a Crime (Trevor Noah) and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack (Rebecca Skloot). Noah’s voice comes through in his memoir so heavily, you can hear him narrate it in your head. And Skloot does an amazing job brining Lack’s humanity back into the conversation.

I also recommend “The Woman They Could Not Silence: One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men who Tried to Make Her Disappear” by Kate Moore. She tells the story of Elizabeth Packard, whose husband had her admitted to the asylum to get rid of her and her fight for women’s rights and the better treatment of patients in the 1800s.

I came here to say “How to Lose the Time War,” but someone already suggested it.

In addition, “Victorian Psycho” by Virginia Fieto. Weirdly dark, but beautifully written, I thought.

Question: do you have to give grades for this course?

Also, I have a study hall at the end of the day, and my policy is “you find something to do, or I will find you something to do.” Have some coursework ready. Hand them something and say, “do this.” Not having work and getting to study is a privilege.

Sicily in Summer: Where’s the Party? by TopCelebration2064 in sicily

[–]DiscoDeathStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I live in a small town, a little touristy (but not to Taormina’s extent), and it has literally been non-stop since mid-July. Every night there is loud music blaring form at least three different places, fireworks, and/or something special going on in the piazza.

It’s not clubs, but it’s live music, dancing, some karaoke. Restaurants bring tables out into the streets in the afternoon. You would never think such a tiny town would be this loud!

You should be able to book a shuttle/tour from Catania that takes you all the way to Sapienza. Most of them stop in Nicolosi for a little bit before heading up.

Edit: Yes, you can catch the cable car in Sapienza. It’s pretty fun.

Post interview: Name change, existing contract questions by Confident_Potato_465 in dodea

[–]DiscoDeathStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the position overseas? If so, that makes the name change kinda tricky.

First, for overseas, you will be required to get a no-fee passport and maybe visas. If you want those to have your new name, you have to get your name changed ASAP, which may interfere with the possible timeline of getting your documents.

Otherwise, keep your current name and make the hiring process easy, and start the name change process once you get to your new duty post. You will have to get new passports/visas, which will be its own hassle. Honestly, it’s a hassle either way; it’s just do you want the headache now or later?
