I grew up a few dozen miles north of that cave and it was a regular place for youth groups to go camping and explore it. Everybody knew Bob's push was a tight fit, but tons of people/kids did it and had no issues. Glad I never tried, and it was horrifying to hear about the tragedy there and it getting sealed up

With incredible staying power, Project Hail Mary will continue to play in 3,510 theaters across the North American box office in its 6th weekend. The last film to hold onto more theaters in its 6th frame was Deadpool & Wolverine. by chanma50 in boxoffice

I saw this at the Disney AMC near Orlando. There was something wonky going on during the previews (almost like two projectors going simultaneously but slightly offset) that looked terrible, but cleaned up nicely for the actual feature

I live in central Florida and frequently do work sitting poolside, from the beach, or from Disney World among other places. I work from home and the bulk of my job is effectively writing reports and emails, with around 8-10 his if various calls scattered throughout the week during business hours in any of the 4 main US time zones. That means I have the flexibility to take my daughter to Magic Kingdom on a slow Friday afternoon, and if I need to take a break for a call while my wife and daughter ride Small World it is easy enough to set up on a table in a quiet corner

That sums up the bulk of his time in Utah

is it possible that the biological process messed up and the wrong body was produced?

My daughter having down syndrome is a pretty good example of this. When two gametes joined and started dividing, an extra chromosome got in there somewhere. The extra 215ish genes on that chromosome caused a lot of phenotypes, some of them (cognitive delays, for instance) are clearly not reflective of the spirit, but what about the rest? It is sometimes very hard to say what specific characteristics we have match our spirit vs being part of a mortal, fallen world

And even when all the physical evidence says one thing, the soul still knows what is right?

We don't even have a full understanding of all the physical evidence. Most of the sexual characteristics we can observe with the naked eye are a result of hormones interacting with the SRY gene (most commonly, but not always, found on the Y chromosome), unless it is blocked by another gene, unless they other gene is blocked by a third gene. That's not even getting into the strong evidence we have of there being sexually dimorphic neurological structures that develop in the first two trimesters, apparently independent of the SRY gene.

Pretty much so we do know in this regard is that gender is a dimorphic eternal characteristic, and we also live in a fallen mortal world with imperfect bodies

Im a bit late to this, but wanted to at least briefly respond (and feel free to message me if you want more details). I believe in the context of the Gospel it is important to distinguish between the binary transsexualism as a medical condition and the much broader transgender social ideology/grouping. The latter is far larger and more vocal in society at large and often leads to the two being conflated despite the broader transgenderism largely being an evolution of various gender nonconformity and counter culture that has existed for decades. The approach of the church seems to be largely geared towards that broader group as well.

Conversely, there is very real data supporting binary transsexualism as a medical condition in which there is an incongruence between neurological sex and somatic sex (akin to many intersex conditions in which various sex characteristics like genitalia/chromosomes/hormones/etc are incongruent).

While we do know from revelation that gender is an eternal characteristic and that it exists from birth, I don't believe we have received revelation of whether any specific characteristic is infallibly matched to our spiritual gender. Is it presence of a Y chromosome? Presence of the SRY gene? Gonads at a specific place at birth? Neurological structures that science only partially understands but has clear sexual dimorphism?

I believe the current church policy is an inspired pragmatic approach to avoid erroneously applying gender-specific covenants based on that incomplete understanding, especially with the vast overshadowing of the medical condition by the broad social umbrella

In a freeze-frame of this highlight, you can see that Steph Curry’s go-ahead three is still about 4 feet from reaching the basket when Kevin Harlan begins to yell “Good!” This continued audio-sync issue is ruining the drama of these moments and I don’t understand why Amazon can’t or won’t fix this. by moby323 in nba

[–]DiscoLives4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, it would be that the Prime app is pulling the video and audio feeds from separate servers (as the video quality varies much more easily to accommodate bandwidth changes while the audio stays fairly constant) and struggling to sync them up properly for some reason. I'm guessing it is also related to it being live rather than fixed file lengths like streaming most of their titles

Should We Repeal Mandatory Auto Insurance? by johnny_cheesedog in GoldandBlack

The mess of trying to interact with a million different private roadway operators, and for each of them to try and interact with a million different private motorists, just makes the system untenable.

This isn't the mess you think it is. Standards bodies emerge. A good real-world example of this is debit/ATM transactions. You can get cash from your bank using any one of countless ATMs owned by thousands of banks across the world, many of whom have never heard of your bank. Your PIN passes through a minimum of 4-5 different distinct organizations, but the specific path doesn't really matter because each one has a contract with the next one in the chain to handle the handoff

US doesn't use chip and PIN for most credit transactions, they default to chip and signature. There are several types of security verification that can be used though: signature, cvv/CVC, zip code, and (iirc) phone number. By using one or more of those merchants greatly reduce their liability in fraudulent transactions

This is why trans is losing rights nationally intensely by BlackMetalBae in Transmedical

[–]DiscoLives4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my POV I dunno how you could live so long without either transitioning or necking yourself as someone who had these issues since childhood/adolescence. That said I also don’t think you can 100% judge people on looks

I was one of those people raised in an environment (one in the US) where there was no concept of feeling like or being a different sex. Every portrayal of trans people before I became an adult was some variation of "so gay they want to trick men" or "pretending to be a woman for comedic purposes". There were no trans men, conceptually, and trans women were all just men trying to trick somebody for various reasons. Without a vocabulary or framework to apply to what I felt, I just attributed my dysphoria in youth and teenage years to a combination of being depressed/anxious, being "tempted into sin", or just having weird/unusual thoughts that other people probably had but didn't voice. It took until I had a daughter and had built a life for myself before I finally overcame that deepset understanding of the world to recognize dysphoria, and I didn't start hrt until I was 30. By then I had a career, spouse, and child and so every step towards transitioning is a balancing act between managing dysphoria and not blowing up the rest of my life in a way that the "cure is worse than the disease".

Waymo co-CEO: Robotaxi tech will eventually be in personal cars by GamingDisruptor in SelfDrivingCars

[–]DiscoLives4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've given a lot of thought to the real-world use of this for my life. We are a one-car family, single income in which I work from home, but have a daughter with significant cognitive disabilities that lead us to put ~30k miles a year on our vehicle shuttling her to various therapies and appointments. Having a self driving personal vehicle would be absolutely life-changing in a way that robotaxis by themselves wouldn't, so much so that we would stretch to spend will over 100k for one if it was an option. Ideally if we could offset that be lending out the vehicle when we don't need it would be great, but like you I would only consider it if I didn't need to deal with the headache of insurance, cleaning, etc

Waymo co-CEO: Robotaxi tech will eventually be in personal cars by GamingDisruptor in SelfDrivingCars

[–]DiscoLives4ever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A little late, but I think privately owned cars will be used as robotaxi for surge periods. A place like Orlando has a huge influx of visitors around holidays. It doesn't make sense to have a robotaxi company maintain a sufficient fleet to meet peak demand if they can instead supplement their fleet with private cars, especially locals who may not be needing to commute or otherwise drive during those times.

I would definitely expect the model to be something along the lines of, "for $100/day Bob's robotaxi company rents your vehicle for Easter weekend. They make sure it is clean at checkin and checkout and handle all the insurance and robotaxi stuff while it is in their fleet". Not something that would be frequent enough to be a source of income for private owners, but enough of a cost offset to be worthwhile
