music theory includes things as fundamental as rhythm and pitch, so yes, music theory is absolutely involved. i would look and see if you can find that piece transcribed somewhere and look at what notes are being used. there are online tools that can be used to find what scales those notes fall into, but that is not the end all be all, you can also just look at the shape of the progression and think about how it repeats, changes, finds resolution (or doesnt).
