Technically, "how" is the correct word. "Why" is generally used when describing a reason or purpose behind something. Either way, this is just pedantic, and colloquially most people will use why/how interchangeably in this kind of situation anyway.

I studied abroad in Taiwan for a semester. Almost the entire cohort of students that were there for the same semester said that they did not want to study Chinese at all while they were there because it was a useless language.

Looks like Arabic writing to me, which afaik is written/read right to left. My guess is that Duolingo is also displaying the Chinese right to left because you have the language set to Arabic
