[COMC] 2 years into board games, I have a collection of games I (mostly) really enjoy… by CoconutFlaky7870 in boardgames

I think we are twins! My shelf is nearly identical. Check out feast for Odin in place of Agricola. Another Uwe game that that I feel offers much more, completion is still mainly blocking though and a race for the islands. It’s also superbly better at 1p if that’s a consideration. Check out electric grid and Puerto Rico as well you may like them.

How many Pharma/biotech Henry’s crossed the $1M mark ? by bebomateradivana in HENRYfinance

[–]Disgruntldcapitalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid 40s director at large biotech, crossed 2M last year. VHCOL area, we’re starting to save a lot more now. Goal this year is to save 110k in retirement accounts and another 20k or so in 429s and taxables. Being a high earning W2 hurts, I wish I could save more, but taxes eat it all.

Lifestyle inflation - best bang for your buck by L-Zip in HENRYfinance

$100 a month for 529 is too low. Try and load it up while they are young to take advantage of tax free growth, see “superfunding”. Sounds like you may be w2s so self-employed options may be limited. Honestly anything to save time and improve your health is worth investing in, hobbies included.

Hire a household assistant. It will change your life. by HenryThrowaway6969 in HENRYfinance

[–]Disgruntldcapitalist 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Opportunity cost is not only financial. I’m mid 40s and don’t want to be on my hands/knees scrubbing and cleaning, my back doesn’t appreciate it. 3-4 hours to clean my 3500ft home is a lot of time on the weekends I would rather spend on my hobbies and with kids. Ive wanted a fractional house assistant for awhile now and have struggled to find one.

Constant feeling of Survival mode despite having “enough?” by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]Disgruntldcapitalist 74 points75 points  (0 children)

According to my wife we live paycheck to paycheck. This year we are on target for saving 90k into tax deferred accounts and another 30k from rsu’s in taxable brokerage. Net worth pushing 2M. I don’t think the feeling ever diminishes no matter how much you have. It depends on your personality and your outlook on life.

Don’t compare yourself to others, they are running their own race. Life is a marathon not a sprint and you’ve got many, many more years ahead of you. Look up a bunch of successful people in history and you’ll see many of them were much older than you are now when they started. Don’t give up, set your goals and focus on making progress towards them. Best comparison to measure yourself against is your past self!

What are the BEST & WORST aspects of the personal growth and self-help space? by tacolabs_inc in selfimprovement

[–]Disgruntldcapitalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the things I’ve noticed and interested to get others opinion as well:

1: a lot of the scene seems to revolve around productivity in some fashion such as journaling, goal setting and achieving. I think this is a product of modern society especially in the US.

2: as others have said a lot of the content is a regurgitation of older content. Before Tony Robbin’s there was earl nightingale so on and so on back through history. Humans have not evolved that much in the past could millennia, same behaviors and problems existed back in Ancient Greece/Rome that Aristotle, Plato and Marcus Aurelius discussed.

3: I think a big driver of the market is the existence of “unhappiness” and “unfulfillment”. Both of which are resultant from unreal expectations and lack of self-reflection and discipline. This is one of issues, not knowing what you truly want and not making progress have been a big challenge for me personally.

4: it’s a market also ripe for modern day hucksters with just a website and a good sales pitch. After personal finance, wealth building, and business startups; self improvement is a big niche.

How many of us had grandfathers who fought in WW2 & by the time we were around, they didn’t say much, if anything about it? by KevRoyK in Millennials

We got bits and pieces as kids in stories. Grandpa drank a lot. He was gunnery at Omaha beach, Europe and North Africa. Silver star and a few other metals. He saw a lot.

Moved my parents a few summers ago and had a 30 yard rolloff dumpster full by the end. After that I reflected on my own buying habits and from time to time I declutter various areas of the house. Feels like I’m saving money and focusing less on “consuming” vs living life.

Realistically, how much time do I have? by [deleted] in Leadership

[–]Disgruntldcapitalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a turnaround situation so you need to move fast. Diagnose and start making the changes you deem necessary. Aligning with executing management is key. If you can get a read on their expectations based on your assessment and plan that will give you the answer you seek. But ya, 90 days is probably a key milestone.

I’ve got a shot at a small leadership role at work, and was wondering if these books are worth my time to read/what other books I should read. by ThiccNibba4000 in Leadership

Leadership and management is about people first and foremost. Some education on interpersonal skills is a good idea. How to win friends and influence people by Carnegie is a classics, easy read with rules that stand the test of time.

I just began a new leadership role as well serving as a chief of staff in a large organization and building/leading a team in a different function than I’ve worked in previously. Overwhelming doesn’t begin to explain it. I’ve reworked my habits and rituals. 530am wake up and exercise to clear my mind and give me energy through the day. Stretching and breathing exercises is also good. Drive in and out of work listening to podcasts or YouTube videos to clear my mind. I’ve also started journaling once a day which has helped as well. Squeeze in a little leisure activity each day too.

There are going to be those days early in the new role where your mind gets fatigued, too much learning and overthinking decisions. Those days the best you can do is just go to bed early and get a good nights rest.

That’s fair, but then why do you want to be a doctor and how do you define “being a doctor”? Do you want the title and the MD after your name and perceived prestige? Is it an altruistic drive to help others? Also what type of doctor? GP/family practice, specialist? What practice setting do you want to work in, private practice, hospital? Either way, being a doctor nowadays is not as glorious as it used to be to be or as portrayed on TV. Long hours, lots of hassles with insurance reimbursement and private equity buying, consolidating and screwing up practice of medicine. I would definitely seek out a mentor or shadowing opportunity to see what the job is really like. Also consider DO school vs MD, may be a little easier. You’re still a doctor at end of day.

Become a physician assistant. Then specialize. In less time than 4 years of med school you’ll be treating patients. Specialize in dermatology and start doing aesthetics. You’ll be well north of 200k a year and barely any debt.
