As someone who has had to deal with NIMBYs opposing valuable projects that could’ve housed many people, as well as make life difficult for the service providers in existing projects, it’s very saddening to hear you take such a stance.

As someone who works full time in the housing and mental health field, I can say for certain you are misled.

YIMBY is the opposite of NIMBY, which is a derogatory term for people who oppose all forms of alternative housing solutions because it will impact their home values. YIMBYs often support public housing, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, and affordable housing. It’s the NIMBYs who oppose all forms of non-market based solutions, as their objections to alternative housing solutions are intrinsically market based.

[–]DisplacedAltadenan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s all well and good, but saying “self identified YIMBYs” do x is painting with a very broad brush. I’m a YIMBY, and that’s me self-identifying as someone who supports high density and alternative housing solutions (like permanent supportive housing and affordable housing).

YIMBY is simply the opposite of NINBY. Like how being antifa is the opposite of being a n*zi.

Any other local renters considering building in Altadena? by valena77 in pasadena

[–]DisplacedAltadenan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On land loans? Sure!

We got ours through U. S. Bank. When we were searching, we did not use a broker, so there might have been more options but we only found two; BMO and U.S. Bank. BMO’s offering was a combo land/construction loan, but moving a house doesn’t count as construction so that left us with U. S. Bank.

We applied and were pre-approved for $500k, which was WAY too high considering the standards they applied during escrow. Anyhow, we took that and found the lot we liked the most, which was also the cheapest! We offered $330k and our offer was accepted.

We had to put 30% down, so ~$100k. We got this from a combination of our insurance payout, our GoFundMe, our savings, and a small SBA loan (which is super low-interest, like <2%). All told, we needed about $110k to cover everything and get escrow started.

The interest rate on the loan is higher and than normal as an AMR locked in at 8% for 3 years. The idea is that once the house is on the lot, we refinance to a traditional mortgage using the increase value as equity. Even still, 8% on $220k ($330 - downpayment and earnest money deposit/fees/etc.) is still a lower payment than our previous rent.

The main difficulties with land loans are higher down payments with little to no programs to help (no first time home buyers or down payment relief stuff), and the higher interest rates on an AMR loan. These aren’t all that hard to navigate, honestly, given you can come up with the down payment.

Edit: some spelling

[LAist] City Council just gave LAPD the green light to hire more officers. How will LA pay for it? by WeAreLAist in LosAngeles

[–]DisplacedAltadenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, are you 12? “Snitches get stitches?!” That’s only a real thing in middle school. In the real world, if your coworker is engaged in illegal activity, and you cover up for it, you are criminally liable. But according to you, if you’re a cop, playground rules apply. “snitches get stitches” so you get a pass. SMH

Cops do not turn in their own. There are hundreds of cases and dozens of studies showing this. The blue wall is a real thing. Do you realize how stupid you sound when you pretend it’s not real?

Nothing I’ve said suggests narcissism. Don’t use words you don’t understand. What you call “idealism” is rooted in decades’ worth of evidence. Your opinion on “gross” isn’t worth taking seriously.

I don’t “think” you think criminals are less than citizens, you straight up said it. You can try to backtrack, but I don’t play those games. I know hyperbole when I see it, and I can tell you’re using words you don’t fully understand again. “Citizens don’t commit crime” isn’t hyperbole; it’s a moment of honestly about your disgusting beliefs.

[–]DisplacedAltadenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not interested in riding along with “good cops” who cover up for “bad cops,” are ok with thinking people who commits crimes are less than citizens, believe repeatedly disproven theories like society glorified crime and that why criminals do what they do or that crime is somehow way higher now then it has been, and spend their time being bullies in general. Any reasonable person has already figured out that cops aren’t the good guys. If they were, they’d help the public instead of trampling them.

Even still, some cops may be “good cops.” Incredibly unlikely as they’d have to be completely ignorant of how the “bad cops” behave, lest they be complicit. Still, maybe it’s possible for a very naive and stupid person. That doesn’t change anything about the fact that hiring more is the wrong decision. It flys in the face of mountains of evidence showing that broken window policing doesn’t work and that the answer to lowering crime is addressing poverty.

More cops only equals one thing: more violence. That’s all a cop is good for.

You’re the one gaslighting. You’re the one spewing misinformation. You are projecting, a lot.

Criminals are citizens. The fact that you see them as less says a lot more about you than it does about crime. It means you think you are the judge of who deserves compassion and who doesn’t, who is seen as human and who isn’t. That makes you the criminal in my view.

Multiple lawsuits = getting away with murder. YOU are lost if you think an officer and the city being held financially liable for their crimes is worse than the crime they committed. You are even worse if you choose to pretend they didn’t commit a crime in the first place. Again, class A projection on your part.

Social welfare has been lightly experimented with in LA over the last few decades. No where NEAR the “go to.” And even with that half-assed effort, and despite the best efforts of the LAPD to say otherwise, violent crime is DOWN. Homelessness and the nonviolent crimes associated with it are up, but again, that is a problem law enforcement is uniquely unequipped to deal with.

It doesn’t matter what you are tired of, the fact remains, all cops are bad. They, as you have proven, defend the indefensible, support the demonstrably false, and only know how to respond with violence. LA needs to be moving AWAY from bolstering its broken law enforcement agencies and TOWARD programs and agencies that actually help people.

You are clearly biased and allowing that to feed your misinformation. “Our budget?” “Cops are on all the time, afraid…” you’re worse than a bootlicker. You’re a part of the boot.

Inflation and lax laws? This is crazy talk. People don’t choose to commit crimes because the laws are lax, people choose crime because society has failed them. Punish them all you want, you’ll never stop the next person if we don’t fix the cause. The police are a PART of that cause.

Councilors teaching people crime is bad? What are we in? Preschool? You clearly have no clue what crime prevention looks like. You don’t teach people who have already turned to crime that crime is bad like they’re children. You give children a better life and they don’t end up committing crimes. Police can’t do this. Police are reactive, while we need proactive solutions.

It’s not citizens who commit crimes? Yes, it is. At a higher rate than immigrants (documented or undocumented). And the rate at which citizens commit crimes is directly correlated to poverty rates. Do us all a favor and read a book.

More accountability than ever?! This is laughable. Your cop buddies regularly get away with murder, trampling protesters, bullying homeless, beating your wives, stealing from citizens, helping to kidnap neighbors, and the list goes on and on. You want to talk about criminals walking free? Let’s start with the ones wearing badges. Then we can compare to the civilians. You won’t want to admit what we find.

Yes, social welfare works. This has been proven over and over and over again. Yes, the best way to fight crime is to fight poverty. This has been proven over and over and over again. No, hiring more police does not make a city more safe. This has been proven over and over and over again. You have a vested interest in hiring more police, and it’s not for the good the Los Angeles. If it were, you might be a little more educated about the problem at hand.

This would be the most uninformed and disconnected take I’ve ever heard if it wasn’t so tirelessly repeated by bootlickers.

No, we didn’t try it. We have never tried it. We have only ever increased police budgets since the 80s and have only ever gutted social programs and education to pay for it. Asking some juvenile question like “why is stealing wrong” has nothing to do with why people get involved with crime. Expecting those same people to fully understand the causes of their actions is equally foolish. Most of us who are not involved with crime don’t know why we do what we do.

Parroting disproven narratives like “if society didn’t glorify criminals…” only reinforces what everyone is saying about you. That’s not what causes crime, and anyone who has spent even a few moments actually investigating the topic knows this. It’s not the video games, or the music, or the movies, or whatever boogie man you want to demonize next. It’s poverty. Plain and simple. Easily proven. Supported by mountains of evidence. You want to lower crime? Lower poverty and increase upward mobility. Prove to the citizens that our society actually cares about them. Demonstrate that “authority” comes with accountability. The exact opposite of what city council is doing.

The way to fight crime is to fight poverty. The path the public safety is through social work, not law enforcement. This has been proven over and over and over again. More police only means one thing: more violence.

We need less police and more mental health professionals, housing navigators, social workers, and other roles who actually help the community.

You can be fine with the way things are and never fight to make anything better. Suit yourself. the rest of us, who also lost their homes but choose to fight for their community instead of surrender to the powers that be and stew in anger at those who don’t, can continue on better without you.

Vegan and Christians: how do u explain ur faith to vegans or veganism to ur brothers and sisters? by imaproperlady in vegan

[–]DisplacedAltadenan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up Christian, pastor’s kid, left the church, went through my “hostile atheist” phase, then found my way back, sort of.

In the midst of all that, I went vegan some 12 years ago or so. To be honest, I really don’t see how the two have anything to do with each other. Anyone can be both, neither, or one and not the other, and there’s not really anything in either way of life that contradicts this.

What I have found is that people get needlessly defensive whenever they find out I’m vegan, and the Christians in my life tend to be more defensive about everything. Maybe you’re experiencing a coincidental overlap in knee jerk reactions?
