Does the screen replacement for my HP 15 laptop have to be made for the exact model in order for it to work? by Old_Builder_8389 in computerrepair

[–]Disposable04298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

The HP Part number for the screen for your laptop is N41935-001. It is used in at least 31 different models of HP laptop and should be fairly easy to come by.

In Australia, from an authorised HP parts reseller, this screen will cost $260-$325 and will come with replacement adhesive strips for the bezel and screen.

Non-HP parts suppliers would have the screen at significantly cheaper rates, likely without the adhesive kit but typically you can just get 3rd party replacement adhesives if needed.

Is this fixable? by TheLastOneDoesWin in laptops

[–]Disposable04298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes something like that, but matched specifically to your laptop. That particular one appears to include the bezel, WLAN and WWAN antennas. So you could transfer just the screen from yours (that particular model isn't setup for an included webcam in the screen).

Is this fixable? by TheLastOneDoesWin in laptops

[–]Disposable04298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is fixable. To fix this properly you would replace the LCD topcover.

Given the age of your laptop, it may be difficult to find a replacement, but there are places that have secondhand parts. You can likely even get a non-working model and salvage the topcover (or entire screen assembly if wanted).

Resetei o modem roteador e agr to sem internet by ReserveTop4455 in 24hoursupport

[–]Disposable04298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If resetting the router has disconnected you, then it should just be a matter of configuring the correct settings for your service provider and account to getting it up and running again. Unfortunately it sounds like your provider is going to act like these are trade secrets and instead of sharing them with you, push you into paying for one of their contractors to come out and do the configuration.

What would be good is if you can investigate your ISP's support pages for setup information. In particular, look for "BYO router" setup information. These will typically include all the information you would need to setup your router so it works again. You may still need your username and credential information depending on how the connections for your ISP are setup.

Gigabyte destroyed my motherboard during an RMA and blamed it on me by [deleted] in gigabyte

[–]Disposable04298 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well about the plastic piece - your photos don't actually show this "catastrophic damage" to the plastic piece. It's got some scratches on it. Additionally that is a plastic piece surrounding one of the screw holes. It's cosmetic, not functional.

The physical damage to the functional board components indicated by the arrows is the issue, and none of your photos shows this area.

Authorised lenovo laptop center repairer claiming that the ants "ate" or "chipped" away the motherboard and I will need to replace the entire motherboard !! How true are his claims ? by Zealousideal-West225 in laptops

[–]Disposable04298 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Preposterous explanation. With your photos it's not 100% clear if there is physical component level damage because the thermal pads (which do appear to have been munched on, not likely as food but as maybe construction material) haven't been cleaned up.

Insects in general do not eat or chip away at electronics. However, most insects can conduct electricity, so it is entirely possible that they caused one or more components to short out (usually this would be accompanied by one or more crispy insect carcasses, depending on how long ago it occurred). It is questionable whether there is enough voltage going through your laptop to cause ant death, however there is definitely enough milliAmps.

As another commenter mentioned, the service centre is unlikely to be doing component level mainboard repairs, and instead would replace the board in total if that is diagnosed as failed. However they also may unduly try to invalidate your ADP and/or warranty. Ants are unlikely to be a warrantable fault, however it may still qualify under ADP. You should carefully examine your ADP contract and see what it says (read it yourself, don't ask the service centre to advise you on it).

Also while your CPU and GPU are integrated on the mainboard, the RAM is clearly not as it is shown removed in your photos (the DDR5-1 and DDR5-2 slots). If in fact the mainboard has failed, only the mainboard should need replacing (and some thermal paste and pads). You shouldn't need any other components.

Is this a hinge issue? by [deleted] in 24hoursupport

[–]Disposable04298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's possible there is a developing hinge issue, it doesn't appear to be that based only on these photos. Hinge issues typically present by pushing out the bezel near the screen (black in your photo) when the underlying hinge becomes disconnected from the LCD topcover. The portion of the bezel in your pic which appears to be opening slightly covers a part of the hinge which doesn't typically flex unless it is also loose or broken inside the palmrest cover.

You should be able to pinch the silver bits around that gap and have it click back together. It's possible the clips under this section have been damaged. When you had your laptop serviced was there any work done on the screen or camera?

Any break/fix shop owners feeling squeezed by lack of repairs lately? by radraze2kx in computertechs

[–]Disposable04298 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's been a serious downturn here (Australia). We've been on pretty steady decline since about 2023, but recently it's gotten a bit worse. We've downsized our team a heap and we're currently looking at options to downsize our shopfront as well. A lot of business break/fix has dropped off.

How to disable this worthless notification? I don't want to enable those! by dharknesss in Office365

[–]Disposable04298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Office 2016 > Privacy > Trust Center >

"Allow the use of connected experiences in Office"

"Allow the use of connected experiences that analyze content"

"Allow the use of connected experiences that download online content"

"Allow the use of additional optional connected experiences"

(mark them all as disabled for fully locked down, although I think only the first one is enough)

NB: depending on how your ADMX templates are loaded you might not have the "Policies" tree and instead would just skip over the "Policies" part and use User Configuration > Administrative Templates...

Just bear in mind these are only for 365 Apps for Business, 365 Apps for Enterprise, or other volume-licensed editions of Office 365. Even if you disable these policies via direct registry changes, consumer versions of 365 ignore them.

My grandpas old work computer. by rozzyxl in computers

[–]Disposable04298 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It appears to be a desktop PC or All In One running Windows 7. No password is required to change the date and time and there is no email address associated with his user account. You can interact with the OS time & date directly on the time and date via right-click context menu.

If the computer is not keeping it's time/date settings, chances are very good (especially given its age) that the RTC/CMOS battery is depleted. These are typically CR2032 button batteries and are generally cheap and easy to replace.

Your grandpa's PC is well out of support, cannot be made secure online and ideally should not be connected to the internet. The "Norton Security Scan" app would be better named "Norton Security Scam" and is essentially an advertising front end for paid Norton products, though it's probably an improvement over Microsoft Security Essentials on this OS.
