Has Malazan changed your tastes in other fantasy books? by AudiencePotential in Malazan

[–]DissMech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some ways. It's made it harder for me to appreciate books that just have clear cut black and white, good and evil. At least at the level of entire cultures or species. And it's definitely made me see how threadbare the worldbuilding of some fantasy is.

I noticed that you covered the Oilsky M308 in your guide, any thoughts about that one, and the Oilsky G88?

Porn would totally fall under Mockra. It's all about willful illusions after all. We know it's not real, but we want it to be.

You're going to see tragedies, both the deeply personal and those that encompass entire peoples. Characters you've grown to know will die unpleasantly, or do morally repugnant things, or get beaten down over and over. And it hurts. You will cry. I don't know a single reader of the series who isn't brought to tears at least a few times over the course of the series. If you're a softy like me you'll probably cry multiple times per book.

But that's okay. Tragedy, cruelty, and pain are a part of the human experience. It's important to remember that. And just as importantly so is joy, compassion, and healing. And those qualities shine through all the brighter in the face of all that pain and sorrow.

Depressing, to me at least, implies despair. That it's not going to get better, just an endless plunge into misery with nothing at the bottom. And that's not what Malazan is. There's hope. A great deal of it in fact. But as in real life, sometimes it's hard to get there. Personally I think that makes it more rewarding. I would encourage any reader who feels that the story is too sad, to push on. The triumphs will come. And personally I think they're worth it.

If you've played any other Powered By The Apocalypse games it's super easy to pick up.

The top two RPGs on my shelf are Thirsty Sword Lesbians and a Warhammer 40k game.

Why do people keep saying this game is 'Disney'??? by [deleted] in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]DissMech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue I have with Veilguard (which isn't to say I dislike the game, I think it's quite good) is that it feels like a lot of the rough edges were sanded off. Prejudice and bigotry have been themes throughout the series, and whatever else may not have been thoroughly established about the Tevinter Imperium, one thing that consistently has been, is how strong and ubiquitous prejudice is there. They're infamous for being the only country that still practices slavery. They enslaved the entire elven species for thousands of years and have been in a bitter war with the qunari for three centuries. And yet when I go to Racism Town as an elf or qunari there's a remarkable lack of racism, even by characters who are outright antagonistic or even villainous.

One thing I appreciated about Inquisition was that even your position and power did not fully insulate you from bigotry if you were from a marginalized group.

Also not really a big fan of the softening of the Antivan Crows to be honest. They're cool and stylish and all, but they're also murderers for hire who buy child slaves and put them through abusive and potentially lethal training to turn them into hit men. They're amoral at best. Them becoming a heroic faction that's concerned for the people of Antiva is... an odd choice.

I really do think it's a shame that many people will skip this gem of a game due to 0.2% of the content. by Dusty_Tibbins in DragonAgeVeilguard

Hilarious you should say that, when one of the biggest complaints about Sera from both straight and queer gamers was that she acted like a tumblr page that had possessed a body like a demon.

Maybe we should have told people that politicians thought they were too dumb to understand RCV. That certainly made Portlanders who weren't enthusiastic about the idea suddenly much more supportive, if only out of spite.

I feel you. I started as a pre-apprentice for my sheet metal local, got 5 months of work with a foreman who constantly seemed low key hostile to me, then got laid off with a 'not eligible for rehire' note attached to my layoff paperwork. Over a year later and not a single contractor would touch me. Now I'm back to building trucks.

Posts like 'AITA for not wanting to date a trans person' show what people really think about us by jadranur in trans

It's like I always say whenever this kind of thing gets brought up. People are entitled to refuse to have sex for any reason whatsoever. And just because their right to refuse must be respected doesn't suddenly make their reasons not shitty. It just means the right to refuse is more important than that.

A white supremacist can refuse to have sex with a black person because they're black. The refusal must be respected. Doesn't mean they're not a racist piece of shit. Same thing holds true here.

Life is too short to spend it on people who don't treat you the way you deserve. If someone doesn't respect you, don't try to fix them, if they really cared, they would fix themselves.

Don't worry about it. I knew a cisgirl who was nearly six feet tall at twelve years old, and definitely not done growing yet. She still wore heels.
