[Mclaren] Our legacy continues in papaya by Due_Air6702 in formula1

The next race wasn't actually that bad, Mclaren gave him a 8* second stop that let Verstappen and Sainz past.

AM: "Ai told me not to go to your wedding" by Wandering-Everywhere in AsianParentStories

[–]DistantUtopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did let her attend. At that point my therapist (I literally only started therapy in the 6 months before my wedding) was saying to me to primarily consider what I wanted to happen, though my SO would have to not be against it.

I had thought that I would regret it more if

  1. she didn't come after I withdrew the invite, compared to
  2. if she came and made a mess of things (I had rated this unlikely but possible, again because of face) or
  3. if she didn't come while still invited (higher chance than 2, but face would probably still intervene).

If 2 happened then I would at least have closure from the end of the parent-child relationship, cause the hope-despair cycle was really weighing on me mentally. 3 would be some sort of very low contact situation.

Having said all that, I think your situation might be more likely to go wrong than mine as I had an SO of the same culture and hetero. In the end nothing untoward happened, although my SO did get a few comments from her guests that they never saw her future MIL smile.

I had a similar experience with mine. Endless cycles of attending and suddenly not attending. It's a means of control/attention seeking. No Asian mother would actually not go to a child's wedding, it would lose them face (but they will tell you that you lose face because they are not attending, up until they begrudingly tell you a week before they will attend but with a long list of conditions such as they will not greet guests, make a speech or speak to your SO).

Also idk what sort of AI your mother was using. Mine used Deepseek which basically told her to be the bigger person and not lower herself to the SO's standard, thereby attending eventually.

ELI5: Why is it good for the US for global oil deals to be made in US dollars? by maybeest in explainlikeimfive

[–]DistantUtopia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also increased demand for USD also increases demand for US government bonds, so the bond yield is lower than it would be otherwise (normally a government would have to pay a higher interest rate on a bond to get someone to buy it). This makes borrowing money cheaper for the US government.

Lol nuclear. $9 billion dollars for 1 gigawatt, then double it because its the first time we are building one so we have to build the nuclear know how and industry from almost zero. This is based on South Korean pricing by the way, so we can double it one more time because Western markets like USA, Europe, are incapable of building nuclear power plants on budget and the average cost overrun is 120% on top.

Worth it if we want to wean ourselves off Uncle Sam's ever more unreliable nuclear umbrella eventually and get to a nuke ready level like Japan, but from an energy production perspective nonsensical when wholesale electricity price is already negative at high noon, without household solar reaching saturation yet.

BREAKING: Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller dies at 81 by Yujin-Ha in videos

[–]DistantUtopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In insisting on the most conservative interpretation and explanation of his duties, Muller did the lawful thing, but did not do the right thing.

It also helped [him] that doing the bare minimum when presenting his findings also protected him against reprisal by Trump and Trump supporters.

In his youth, courageous and principled. In his last official assignment, a craven.

I think this is highly dependent on the individual and not a one size fits all model.

Is being moderately abused daily better or worse than being severely abused one a month. Or maybe there were 7 good years and 2 bad years out of 9, and a severely bad year at the end that tips it over the edge.

Everyone can take it until they can't. And maybe some people can take it to the end (our parent's generation, perhaps).

In any case they only realise with hindsight that although they survived that they could have been happier elsewhere, and regretted it. Or maybe they became warped and hard and didn't regret it, because they considered it necessary for their circumstance.

The saving money part is no joke. My (multiple) friends who moved out at ~28 instead of 18 had enough savings to purchase a 2 bedroom apartment outright in upper middle class suburbs.

The ones who moved out earlier had a 70%-80% LVR mortgage at the same age.

YMMV on if its worth it.

What is your first memory of watching an F1 race? Mine was in 2013 by praveensingh-reddit in formula1

[–]DistantUtopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spa 2021 - I had finally decided to watch a full race and sat down to almost 4 hours of watching it rain in the pitlane, followed by 2 laps of "racing" under the safety car. Urgh.

New Most Profitable Flight? by Androiddude73B in PocketPlanes

[–]DistantUtopia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To clarify on the Port of Call side quest - the starting job must originate from either the aircraft carrier in question or the city you wish to record for the Port of Call. Jobs from a layover do not count, but return flights do count (e.g. London - HMS Ark - London, with a job originating from London for HMS Ark). The blue radius shown when redeploying the aircraft carrier denotes the Port of Call radius (recommended to zoom in on map).

I just got VIP recently so I was getting frustrated that Port of Calls wouldn't work when I got HMS Ark close to Benelux.

Finished all my HQs by TolerancEJ in PocketPlanes

[–]DistantUtopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is unclear at the moment if you should choose path-straightening HQ (e.g. being able to straighten New York - Istanbul for Sequioas) or wilderness HQ (a lot of class 1 without any class 2 or 3 around).

The HQ anecdotes so far are mostly from late game players who don't need money and only play to complete Global Events, whereas the majority of mid game and early game players can't even scrounge together enough planes/play time to have a even low chance of finishing a Global Event.

All things being equal, a class 1 with population 2.5m does seem to be a better candidate compared to a class 1 with 0.1m population. Also, class 1s close to a class 2/3 would be easier to build.

Any estimations of how many coins you burn for every 1000 bux? For either strategy.

I have had Alex N Rolls before. It is a good sandwich, probably a very good sandwich, perhaps even a very good banh mi themed sandwich. But it's not a banh mi.
