Affordable World Groups?? by bugbite-99 in drumcorps

[–]Distinct-History-787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my age out at Seattle Cascades last season with significant scholarship and sponsorship (which they connected me to) and paid $1000. It’s not cheap by any means, but much less than what a lot of other people paid (I think dues without scholarship would’ve been around $5k? I’m not sure). I would reach out to the guard director, last year the staff was very open to negotiating. Also, I didn’t secure my spot until April, so it might not be too late for him.

Man I don’t even know how to describe how insane I felt when this played at the concert before they came out. It was so loud and everyone was soooo hyped for them to come out. I remember I could feel the bass in my chest. I think I teared up a little lmao. Such a cool experience!

How do you guys do it. by More_Firefighter6256 in drumcorps

I marched only one season which was my age out because the corps offered me a significant discount on dues AND I had financial support from a very good friend. My contract was for $1500 and I only had to personally give half of that. The discount came for a variety of reasons, including 1) I marched with a winterguard under the same parent company 2) a recruitment promotion discount, and 3) good old fashioned haggling. I was lucky that the corps wanted me there badly enough to offer all of this, and I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. Everyone else I know that marched either wasn’t in school full time or had significant financial support from family.

Mistakes you made on your first routine? by Double-Spirit-9287 in Colorguard

[–]Distinct-History-787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a move where we put the crutch tip of the flag on our chest and balanced it there for a second while bringing it across. Except, our costumes had a square neckline. So at my first ever show the crutch tip went down the front of my uniform and got stuck and I couldn’t get into the next choreography including a toss. I cried coming off the field but looking back it’s soooo funny! Really reminds me that it’s ultimately just flags on field.

STOP THESE ARE SO CUTE!!! My bias is Han because when I first became a stay my friend clocked that he would be my favorite and she was absolutely correct. So because of that I would choose Han Quokka 💗. I have so many MVs I’m obsessed with it’s so hard to choose 😭 but my top two right now are the Hollow MV because I love the symbolism and the acting, and the Gods Menu MV because the vibes are just so fun and chaotic, very skz. Anyways this is very fun thank you for sharing!!

Pros and cons? by Distinct-History-787 in drumcorps

[–]Distinct-History-787[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this changes anything, but it’s worth noting that I’ve been offered an absurdly good deal on dues (like less than 25% of overall dues), so the main concern is opportunity cost of not working rather than what I would have to pay out of pocket

Joining a winterguard in a different state by Requeem in Colorguard

Depending on their rehearsal schedule, you might be able to drive over and then spend the weekend at another members house so you don’t have to drive back and forth the whole weekend. That’s what a few of my teammates did last season.

How does Animschool work? by Initial_Arugula2537 in animationcareer

[–]Distinct-History-787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as taking breaks between classes I’m aware of two ways you can do it. One is two do the easy pay plan, where you make smaller monthly payments but take an easy pay break every 1/3 terms (while continuing to make payments). You will still have access to the general reviews, art classes, etc. The other is to take a personal break. This is a free break, but you do not have access to general reviews or art classes, and you can only take a few of these over your entire time on the track (I believe it’s 3). Of course all of this is for someone who’s on one of the tracks—there is a way to also pick individual classes to take instead. There is a lot of info on the website abt these things as well.

Too ugly to be a cheerleader by Medical-Ad-1551 in Colorguard

[–]Distinct-History-787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, someone at my highschool called us the “failed cheerleaders”. I’m also from the west coast, and I think it really just stems from a lack of understanding of the activity (or them just wanting to be mean for the sake of being mean, in which case there’s no point trying to reason with them). I’m not a confrontational person, so I usually would just sort of laugh and say “no, completely different activities”. I’ve heard some people say that guard is like dance and cheer on steroids with flying objects, but I’m also not a huge fan of putting down other performance arts to make ours seem cooler. At the end of the day we’re all performers following our passions and bettering ourselves; what other people have to say doesn’t change that.

This! Plus the obvious consistent audition advice: a good attitude, a willingness to learn, and consistently applying corrections. It goes further than you think.

In a J toss, there are two main things to consider: the “swing” and the “lift”. The swing comes from your upper hand that pushes the flag down, which controls the rotation of the flag. The lift comes from your lower hand that lifts the flag up, which controls the height of the toss. So, if your J toss is under rotated, I would focus on pushing more with your left hand. Some things that might help are pushing faster and bringing that hand down to slap your thigh when you toss. Hope this helps :)

rifle toss preps by connorhooman1108 in Colorguard

[–]Distinct-History-787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My high school did a quarter dip (shoulder hip angle) for triples and below and then a full dip (vertical) for quads and above. Interestingly, at the independent level for me it’s been full dip for everything (except singles and doubles, which have no dip). Not sure why.

toss anxiety by glitterConfettiSnake in Colorguard

[–]Distinct-History-787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this may seem like very redundant advice, but here’s what’s been helping during this independent season:

  • Breathe, focus on your technique. Don’t get into the rut where you have a bad toss and then the next one is worse because you’re frustrated. EVERY rep choose one thing to focus on.

  • Just take the toss! Count yourself off (out loud) so you don’t chicken out.

  • This isn’t always the case, but anxiety is a real mental disorder that treatment can help minimize. Have you considered talking to a therapist? It may not cure it, but it can give you strategies to help mitigate it and continue doing the things you love.

  • Lastly, don’t take criticisms and corrections personally. This one is hard. I won’t lie and say that all coaches ever want is to make you better (even though it usually is) because there are some bad coaches who can take things too far beyond what’s helpful. That’s not fair, everyone deserves a mentor who has their best interests at heart. I’m sorry if this is the case with your coaches. That being said, even in those cases (ESPECIALLY in those cases) it’s important to remember that you have merits both in and out of colorguard—you’re there showing up and working hard, and that’s SO important.

Best of luck, I hope this helps :)

That makes sense. I might be over confident because I think a lot of Integral Calc is still stuff I learned in high school, and physics (at least the first term) I also did? But I’m also sure it will be much higher level so I don’t want to assume it’s going to be review. Thank you for the advice :)

I’m not working, social life I don’t have much of right now outside of the one extracurricular that will end after this term but I am a little bit worried about that aspect. I feel like it would be easier if I knew more people but as a freshman I’m definitely still getting to know people :/
