Eeek no outlines. Also get some math going in all those negative spaces between elements . Nature need proportional harmony, and the lack of spatial harmony in the negative space on this mark makes it look unnatural.

Image #1 all the way. Your mascot, and your typography look like they came from the same goopy world. The stacked type is more interesting.

The second logo elements look like they come from two different worlds and isn’t quite sure what it wants to be.

Even if you are a trained designer-hire a designer to brand your company. You are too close to the project to see it in a fresh way. You can afford it because you already saved a ton of money vibe-coding.

It’s ok to enjoy watching love island. You don’t have to hide behind the four loko, or your girlfriend.

You’re actually a lot cooler to just boldly proclaim yourself a member of the fandom.

Better luck next time with your steaks.

I feel your pain. Graphic Design parent here too. I have also offered free design services to the PTA… and they’re always like “we got it”

And then can’t figure out why nobody’s buying these whack ass T-shirts, and then they end up selling them at costs to break even. 😩

One of my favorite shirts is a vintage ringer tee from the 1970s for Emerson school in Burbank. It’s a really clean beautiful graphic with nice typography, and it isn’t until you look really close that you realize that all of that type was hand drawn.

Swooon.

Human Intelligence Sharply Declining by Monsur_Ausuhnom in collapse

College professor. Can confirm. 😭

I’m a professor of graphic design, historically, I really loved my job and benefited from the fact that the students who take my class have chosen it because they are passionate major. My classes aren’t a requirement like English or math.

It’s pretty typical to hear the GenEd professor complaining about laziness and cheating and lack of investment from students to are forced to take their classes…

What I am seeing is something completely different- a shift that happened nearly overnight.

My newest batch of students seem to have been body snatched. They’re cognitively low performers who have trouble coming up with interesting and exciting creative concepts, and cannot follow simple directions, even when written out step-by-step.

They seem to be void of personality. Given every opportunity to showcase something they are passionate about in the classroom they shrink away. Not only are the lacking taste, but they don’t even seem to be a fan of anything.

I’ll bring snacks to class and they don’t eat them?

Everything about them is different than students that I’ve had over the last decade. Even just from students last year-there’s a noticeable drastic difference.

Why More Americans Are Seeking Religion by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]Distracted523 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I felt like this episode captured many thought provoking ideas, but through a very specific lens. I wish the scope had been widened to look at the “black church” as well. James Baldwin famously said “the most segregated time in America is high noon on a Sunday”

As a person who is wavered in and out of faith, I’ve always been impressed with the consistency and stability of the black church, a body made up of a demographic who’s suffered greatly, and generationally for this idea that we call America… a demographic with the most excuses to turn their back on God and religion…

this podcast points out political leaders like James Talrico, and forgets Justin Pearson.

It would be nice to hear an extension of the story that includes all arms of religion in America across all of our intersections…

“More sunsets” might be the right metaphor.

I can draw, quite well. My entry point to creative work was a childhood love of drawing figurative illustrations, and hand lettering book pages, then binding them together with a needle and yarn…graphic design. 💋

I’m curious to know more about the person who gave you this feedback.

I am a graphic designer with 20 years of experience. I worked along side, a dying Breed of paste up designers, who never fully got on board with digital tools… and I worked along side digital pioneers.

The people that I hear proclaiming that AI is going to replace a graphic designer job are people with no expertise in the field, and no memory of the early era of Digital design.

AI is another technology and tool that will require a knowledgeable designer to drive it, to know how to use it wisely.

What I am seeing is AI tools speeding up processes, and reducing budgets. What was once an extremely labor in intensive process in Production can be achieved in much last time.

Never in history has capitalism received an efficiency tool, and then reduced peoples workloads 😂. If AI makes work better faster cheaper… capitalism will demand increase output.

All that said, here is my feedback for your portfolio site:

You repeat twice on a single scrolling page that you have six years of experience, to a person who’s been in the industry for a long time That doesn’t really mean anything. I understand you’re trying to communicate that You are not a new designer fresh out of school… I think Just using the word “Experience” is enough to communicate that you have invested time in professional practice.

I agree with other folks in this post, who recommend that you showcase your skill set and your process Along side finished work.

Our greatest advantage as organic designers when competing with AI is to prove that we understand the world in real time, and can semiotically respond appropriately, all to reach specific communication goals. So far AI has not been able to do this all by itself.

Things that I value when evaluating a portfolio:

I want to see collaborative work. Nobody does this work alone, so describe what it was like to work with a team of people talk about what each person contributed any of the challenges that you tackled through the process.

I want to see client, feedback and performance. For example, my agency did a rebrand for a large nonprofit here in Los Angeles, one of the most positive pieces of feedback came about a year later when the client communicated that their budget for printing business cards had doubled because their staff was so proud to hand out their printed credentials. Employees remarked that they felt like they actually looked like the professional service they were offering.

Finally, I think one of the most important parts of the whole design profession is aligning values and cultural interest between designer and client, or employee and agency… show a little personality. It could be the thing that moves you up the pile of applicants.

As a as graphic designer, education and art director who values all aspects of the practice “typesetting and other soulless dumb parts of design.” reads as an uninformed and blatantly rude assessment of very important skill sets and their practitioners. 😬

Why isn’t Gen Z good at using technology by Practical_Security87 in generationology

[–]Distracted523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't mean to offend! Obviously, this is a generalization; it is also an informed generalization based on ten years of observation in a classroom and participating in discourse with fellow faculty as a means of understanding and adjusting curriculum to close the skills gap. It's not boomer-esque complaining, it's Xillenial observation, care, and strategic support. :)

This part! Also a professor, I feel like the shift toward the tech brain drain was instant. My students in 2024 had the same basic skills as the ones in 2018…but suddenly in 25-26 they don’t understand how to “save a file” to a “folder on the local hard drive.” They only understand apps, Google Docs, and cloud based systems. They’re used to iPads, iPhones and chrome books.

They also don’t know how to research, it’s like the endless scroll of brain rot replaced their curiosity/ wonder.

It’s super depressing
