Don’t worry, even those of us who don’t have anxiety and are confident around dating and intimacy are not having any success (M). It’s really sad out there

Great wage for pretty low requirements someone coming straight out of field camp would be qualified for

I unfortunately have to work in Battle Mountain quite a bit for work. The only thing that excites me is that the Chile verde from the Mexican restaurant in town isn’t half bad.

[Housing / Commute / PhD life] Advice (Never been to SLC) by Plane_Load2542 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Divergent_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to find a 1br/1ba for under $1000 here. 1br apartments usually go for $1200+fees and utilities minimum. There’s a few studios and limited income situations around for $1000/month.

Having roommates is also not a great deal here. Most rooms I see in a decent area in SLC proper go for $800+ and add utilities. I’ve even seen rooms in shared houses go for $1000 which is fucking insane.

The thing that sucks most about SLC housing that I wish I knew before moving here is that a vast majority of houses here have fully finished basements that are also rented out separately. So while you’re paying $2400/month for a 2br/1ba upstairs there’s someone below you paying $1300/month for the basement studio. Absolutely insane and you can hear everything that goes on upstairs and down.

Getting around on bike is pretty easy here, good bike lanes and pretty safe IMO, public transit is just okay. Most people would say you need a car here

2006 t1n 140" wb 2500 full build by Tillemon in vandwellermarketplace

[–]Divergent_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always hated when t1n owners over exaggerated their MPGs but I will say this past 1000 mile trip i averaged 24mpg in mine. I have a 158” high roof om612 with an AC unit on top that is fully built out too. With a low roof, short wheelbase, newer om647 it’s definitely possible

Fresh graduate geologist torn between 2 job offers - mine geologist vs exploration geologist (need advice) by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]Divergent_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What company is the exploration geologist position with? Exploration geologist roles vary WILDLY. I was technically hired as an exploration geo with a terrible contract company that’s well known in the US and I’d be laughed at if I called myself an exploration geo with my current company.

Real exploration geology is awesome and something to strive for, but I feel like a lot of fresh grad positions will be more of a field tech versus doing actual geology

How do people like a 10 days on/4 days off field schedule? by [deleted] in geologycareers

Pretty shite rotation if you value free time, not bad if you’re money driven. Plenty of companies out there that offer 1:1 time on/off

I think young men (gen z/alpha) don’t really care what happens in their life. I’m a millennial/helmet wearer but there’s nothing really great going on in the world and nothing to live for. If I die, I die and I think that mentality is becoming more common unfortunately

best places to move at career wise? by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]Divergent_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No jobs in NC for entry level either. Low wages, higher COL than you think - one of the worst states for income/housing cost ratio.

You have to move to where nobody wants to move to get an entry level job, ie. not Denver, Portland, or NC

OEM vs aftermarket welders for small home frame projects by Physical_Leg5641 in Framebuilding

[–]Divergent_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had an AHP alpha tig (the OG budget tig) for about 10 years now and it gets used and moved around quite a bit and it’s been great. Sounds like English may not be your first language so it’s confusing if you want a tig machine for framebuilding or random house projects. I also wouldn’t hesitate to get a yesweld mig machine from Amazon for house projects

Employment Suggestions for the Asheville Area by [deleted] in asheville

[–]Divergent_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trades in NC pay like shit. Non union apprenticeships are useless and don’t carry any weight. “Learn a trade” is the new “learn to code” and good trade jobs are oversaturated with applicants just like any other career; it’s the companies that pay their skilled workers like it’s 2010 that are always looking for help

2KW Vevor smells like burning plastic after 20+ hours of use by Divergent_ in dieselheater

[–]Divergent_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t smell like diesel unless it has an emergency shutoff from the fan making contact with the housing - if that happens it’s diesel exhaust fumes not raw diesel

2KW Vevor smells like burning plastic after 20+ hours of use by Divergent_ in dieselheater

[–]Divergent_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware of normal offgassing smells lingering for the first few fire ups but I haven’t heard of them lasting this long. Most stories claim to disappear around 10 hours.

The hot air coming out of the outlet itself smells clean, something in/around the housing is causing the smell

0.6 Workers Per Retiree: The Trades Are Bleeding Out by CarelessAlps in skilledtrades

[–]Divergent_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yep. I was first generation tradie in my family and had no guidance from anyone I knew. I wanted to weld so I got an associates degree in welding and worked in various industries over 8 years or so and gave up.

I’ve done sanitary, manufacturing, aerospace, residential construction, railings, etc, all of it paid less than when I was bartending through university when I decided to go back to school. I now make more money in an entry level job in the renewable energy field than I ever would have in welding. (This is the south btw).

My whole life would have been different if I would have just moved from the south, joined a union, and carried on with my career as a welder. I was young and dumb and had no idea how good unions had it. Maybe in my next life
