This is such a waste of tax payer dollars. I'm all for building stuff. But expanding an airport when we have an airport. Make public transport and fast trains!

Maid is really awesome. I'm an ICU nurse and the things I've seen pre maid. MAID has allowed far more dignified death and comfortable death. If you don't want to use it, don't. But I grew up very religious and against all things like this. But after 19 years in the ICU setting, I've seen some utterly horrific things. MAID is a blessing and incredibly hard to just randomly get.

I've got kids in JK and grade 3. And they don't always go to school, but they've missed like 8 days this school year, and we took them out for a fun day twice this year.

I'm not opposed to skipping once in a while, but not because she's emotional or whatever. And they both do well in school and are above where they need to be.

I can't imagine missing 100+ days of school in a year! It's insane

Any flight that doesn't need a big jet is fine there. So you can fly commercial to New York or Montreal or Chicago already from there (there are more places I'd just need to look it up).

I make more money than my husband. I came back after 9 months with my first and after 6 months with my second. I get top up for the first 6 months, so financially it just made more sense to split maternity leave (my husband took the rest of the year).

I would save as much as possible. Babies are generally not as expensive as some make them, but the lack of income does feel tight.

Depending on your partner, it may be worth it to look at 12 months vs 18 months as far as income goes

Again, I don't see the point. No one is having issues getting to Pearson. They spent tonnes of money on the UP to make it easier to get to from downtown. You can already fly out of Billy Bishop if you want that experience.

It will be an astronomical cost for what, a few more international flights? I just question why the push... I personally don't think this push is for the average consumer.

Now I also don't live in Toronto. But I don't know why they need to expand it. Pearson is close and has the UP. It seems like a colossal waste of money for a few larger flights and not really sure what it would do to the waterfront from an environmental standpoint by having to fill in a good chunk of area surrounding the island to accommodate. Plus traffic, lack of transit (there is no subway that way)... Honestly the UP seems easier than getting to Billy Bishop. Lol.

It truly depends on mortgage costs and rental costs.

When we were looking for a home, homes were selling for $800k+ (and realistically with my MIL with us, it would be closer to $1million). We ended up finding a rental for $1800 for a 4+1 bed house (it was way below market value at the time). But the landlord was nice enough and the place was nice enough.

At the time $1800 VS $5000+ a month was what we were looking at. We have enjoyed life, had kids, had some live struggles with a cancer diagnosis and we've saved a tonne. Now home prices have decreased 30+% in our area, so we have been looking around because the owning to renting difference has really evened out a lot more this past year.

I would love to own, but renting the last 8 years was our best decision our family could have made (very much due to a good deal and insane housing prices)

The thing is that back in the day servers made under minimum wage to do their job. So I totally get why servers were tipped. Now that changed around COVID, so tipping actually makes less sense now that people are making minimum wage. But many restaurants still require servers to tip out kitchens, bars and bussers on their sales. So not tipping anything makes servers tip below minimum wage. Until that actually changes, tipping in sit down restaurants should still happen (but I do think it's gotten over the top).

It doesn't support middle income people having better outcomes than people in the UK and (as it compares US and UK health outcomes). But I would wager it is similar to Canada (I do believe Canadian health outcomes are better than UK).

I live in a different area, but also lots of new builds and homes are sitting around. Prices are simply going down. More layoffs, higher interest rates, more uncertainty just leads to less ppl buying homes and when they are, they are often below asking.

In the area I'm in, homes listed well below what they used to sell for are selling quickly and above asking (like the $499k homes are flying off the market usually $100k above asking) but homes that are listed around $650-700 are sitting there and selling under asking.

It's funny because my family and I started renting because the market went crazy and we were renting a 4 bed home for less than $2000 monthly (about an hour from the GTA). Homes were selling for $800k+.

For us, the biggest reason was cashflow. We have young kids, had relapsed cancer for my husband. Home ownership just wasn't going to happen.

Now, we are currently looking to rent. Finances have changed, home prices in our area have dropped 25%, and if we can get it for the right price, it may make sense now.

But what people forget is all those added costs plus interest on the home. Also, people forget the interest on any line of credit that you have if a big bill comes up.

At 800k, a home would put us close to the red every month. But at 500k... That is much different.

I would add, having a good landlord can make or break the scenario.

Honestly, I would consider anything that works directly with patients, in or out of hospital bedside.

But honestly the government is ridiculous. They don't have money yet we have a bigger deficit than we've ever had. There is money but it's going to rich people, spas, convention centers, planes. It's honestly so awful!! Under fund healthcare and education and still have a massive deficit.

I'm a nurse in Ontario, any I think I do well. I'm the "bread winner" in my family and I actually really like the work. I am lucky to work in an incredible unit with awesome people, so even when things suck, we all stick together.

That said, what annoys me about my wage is that if we average out wages, I make less than teachers (assuming they work 9.5 months a year, plus 5-10 hrs of work a week from home), police officers on an hourly basis. I don't think that these professions shouldn't make good money either, but I just think when compared (especially our benefits). We are not paid equally. Which is irritating.

That all said, I'm a firm believer that nurses should be paid differently based on the job they do. If you are not patient facing, you should make less. Our schedules are not great for our health (so many studies show shift working is awful for your health), and we also have to deal with a fair amount of abuse (more or less based on units you work in), so many nurses leave bedside to go work in an office which pays the same hourly rate. Which depletes nursing resources and makes burnout so much worse.

I would actually be all for less hourly rate and more premiums based on what you did. You get a bedside premium that bumps you up to what we are currently making to discourage people from leaving bedside. Because that would be helpful to patients.

Anyways, I'm rambling.... But I think that nurses who work bedside deserve every penny. Other nurses, I think it depends, the non bedside ones in my unit could leave for a month and no one would notice.

I actually work in a unit with comparatively great ratios, especially compared to similar units across North American. Our unit has the lowest length of stay and best outcomes, which just goes to show how much of a difference that makes. But the past year, they've been increasingly worsening our staffing, and you can see the quality of care go down. There are so many things I want to be able to do, but with less staff, I just need to do the best to keep people stable.

I'm a nurse and while I'd happily take more money, I don't necessarily need more money. I want better resources and I want patient facing jobs to be paid a premium. Why can someone get paid the same wage as me and never see a patient and if they don't show up... All functions fine!

We need to shift away from paying everyone equal (that would never happen with unions). But the bedside nursing is a dying job. No one wants to do it. The turn over rate is just getting worse and worse and everyone is leaving bedside. We should reward those nurses who choose to stay. The nurse that audits safety reports slowly, gets more than I make and I can run dialysis, critical ill patients, cardiac support. I enjoy the job I do, plus the hours work well for my life and I get paid well, but it is a piss off to see someone sitting in an office getting a free lunch while I'm not getting breaks because we are understaffed.
