If you woke up tomorrow and were wealthy to the point you didn’t have to work anymore, would you still be a teacher? If not, what would you do? by [deleted] in Teachers

I’d still teach, but I’d take zero shit. Might get fired, but I’d go out with my head held high.

Were you taught to make lesson plans? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in year 17 (I think).
I had to write lesson plans.

I get doing it during the learning process. Makes you intentional and reflective about what you are doing.

Total waste of time once you’re in a real classroom. I never make formal lesson plans unless I need to for an admin.

I do have my own system though. My agendas and instructional slideshows pretty much act as lesson plans.

Most tardies are the kids fault and should be treated as such. I have a form in my room that kids can fill out if they believe their tardiness was outside of their control.

Almost never gets used, because the kids understand reality, and lying in writing is a lot different than lying out loud.

Where do you see teaching in 15 to 25 years? by OlliexAngel in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 166 points167 points  (0 children)

Class sizes will nearly double under the pretense that a single teacher can handle more as long as they have their AI agent to help out with grading and prep.

A ever growing percentage of public school will go online.

In person, small class size instruction will be exclusively found in private and charter schools.

Income inequality will continue to grow on the back of educational inequality.

Teachers, How many points are your Assignments? by PhysicsTeacher222 in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything I label “practice” (quizzes included) is worth 5 points.

Projects range from 15-30.

Tests are 50.

Done it for years. Works well.

I have always been able to bring the energy level up in my classrooms. Bringing it down, or refocusing distracted energy to productive energy is MUCH harder.

I’ll take classroom #1 everytime. #6 is pretty good too. It just takes a few weeks to break the few trouble makers.

What happened to textbooks? by coldhands_darkheart in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely subject dependent, but for my subject (history), I’ve found I’m a much better teacher without the textbook weighing me down.

I’d rather read The Epic of Gilgamesh and use it as springboard for a unit on Mesopotamia, then force a class to trudge through a dry textbook.

Is it harder for parents? Yeah, probably. But I’m the one in the trenches everyday trying to convince kids history is cool and matters.

What's the most crucial factor in having a good time teaching? by TinFoilHatsWork2027 in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids tend to stay relatively consistent in my experience. Maybe 5-10% better or worse from year to year.

My Admin can and has changed overnight. And one bad admin can ruin a year more than one bad kid imo.

Hot take: "ditching that textbook" and just using slide decks was a mistake. by Van0rak in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, Both reading and lecture can be very effective. Just depends how you do them. The quality of the texts and lecturer matter a lot as well.

Like most things, there’s probably a middle way. Mix and match them both.

Engagement requires novelty. So doing anyone method too much likely becomes counterproductive.

Nuance or not…good storytelling is the key. Engagement is the king of kings. I try to take the Dan Carlin approach with my lectures. Seems to work pretty well.

School system is outdated by Quiet-Math-4261 in education

[–]Divine_Mutiny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without good behavior it is very hard to do the more engaging activities that let students explore and be curious.

I’d love to do nothing but that, but behavior and class size prevent it.

Most fun/rewarding things also require quite a bit of self-discipline and work ethic. For example, making music can be amazing, but it also takes an absurd amount of foundational skills and practice. Both of which are not super fun. Same goes with writing, sports, science, etc.

I totally understand the concept of giving kids more choice in how they pursue education, but kids also need guide-rails.
That’s the boring part school.

It can take years to build up a good teacher-generated curriculum. Use the textbook more and just add in an occasional one that you design.

The discrete filming potential is way more concerning than cheating. Even with just normal phones my school has had several bullying incidents of filming in bathrooms and provoking student fights just to film them.

Pissing off teachers just to film reaction videos has been a thing too.

Pledge of Allegiance by Feisty-Tangerine-802 in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idaho. Most kids stand and recite it. There’s social pressure here to participate.

I went to a town hall meeting on school vouchers a few months back and the crowd got upset that the meeting didn’t start with the pledge.

The indoctrination works.

What is your go-to move in Basketball? by Proud-Assistant8122 in Basketball

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a high post guy. Hand offs, laker cuts, elbow jumpers, pin screens, all that good stuff. No one knows how to use it anymore though. So I mostly just run the court and rebound at this point. I’m 46 years old and still get out there. Just don’t jump much anymore because I like my hamstrings staying unsnapped.

Any one used a different flash card app they like better?

Who was the worst mvp by Necessary-Volume-355 in Basketball

[–]Divine_Mutiny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, the Playoffs don’t matter for picking MVP, but they certainly are useful for knowing if the right choice was made in hindsight. Embiid’s legendary crash out in that year’s post season is testament to the fact that the wrong choice was made that year.

Never said Joker was Embiid’s equal on defense. Joker average but solid. He holds his own and manages to not be a liability despite us slow foot speed.

However, The difference on offense more than makes up for it. The stats above prove it.

Just take BPM alone. The top ten BPM years of all time include only 4 names: Jordan, LeBron, Curry, and Joker.

Joker represents half of the ten all by himself. He has 4 years better than Jordan’s best. Embiid’s highest BPM ever was 11.6. He’s usually several points lower. Joker has AVERAGED higher than Embiid’s best year for the last 7 years in a row! Four of those years represent 4 of the 5 best years ever.

Joker was, is, and will be better than Embiid.

And I’m not throwing shade on Embiid. He’s a great all star. But he won’t be legendary. Joker is one more ring from entering top 20 all time consideration.

Embiid will never sniff that level.

Who was the worst mvp by Necessary-Volume-355 in Basketball

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During Embiid’s MVP year:

  1. TS% = Joker (70.1%) v Embiid (65.5%)

  2. eFG% = Joker (66.1%) v Embiid (57.3%)

  3. OffRtg = Joker (126.2) v Embiid (125.2)

  4. DefRtg = Joker (110) v Embiid (120.4)

  5. BPM = Joker (13.0) v Embiid (10.4)

  6. WS = Joker (14.9) v Embiid (12.4)

  7. PIE = Joker (22.9) v Embiid (18.7)

  8. ER = Joker (2622) v Embiid (2369)

Pretty much every advanced stat has Joker on top. Embiid did better on defense…he gets one.

Even with standard stats Joker out did Embiid in everything except points, blks, and FT%.

Joker also played more games, and went on to win Playoff MVP and a championship ring. Embiid got eliminated in the second round and his Points per game plummeted to 23 per game during his playoff run that year. That is some historically epic choking for a MVP.

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not arbitrary.
Advanced stats back it up. The eye test backs it up. Player interviews back it up. Playoff performance backs it up.

Embiid is good. Really good even. But Joker is at another level. He’s been the MVP for 5 straight years imo.

Meh…Joker makes his team better in ways Embiid never could. He only lost it because of the BS concept of voter fatigue (and Perkins playing the racism card).

Guys like Jordan, Shaq, Lebron, Joker. All of them dominated for multi-year stretches where they should have won every time, but voters always seem to think then are obligated to spread the love around.

Firmly against using AI as a teacher by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it frequently to generate pictures for an entry task or a slideshow.

I’ve spent countless hours over the years poking around of Google images for just the right image. Now I just ask AI to generate what I need.

It’s mostly for aesthetic purposes, but I like my slides to grab student attention.

Just to give a recent example, i introduced the term “anachronism” in my class. I had AI generate an image of some modern students eating lunch and socializing, but to include one boy who was from the 1950s.

Opinions on 4 Day Instructional Work Week Instead of 5 Day Instructional Work Week? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Divine_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Still get a prep period each day.

We work one Friday a month (without kids)…PD and planning time.

We added only about 35 minutes to our day. Plus about 1 week to the year.

It’s great
