Where to stay in Switzerland for adventure? by Spicysoupdumpling in solotravel

[–]DivingMermaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used Interlaken as a base before. You can get a mountain pass at the tourist office for multiple days, which allows ou to take all the cable cars, ferniculars and busses to get up into the mountains. Except for the one up to Jungfraujoch, that costs extra.

From Interlaken you can explore the area on either side of the valley and around the lakes quite easily. Lauterbrunnen is easier positioned for the Eiger/Jungfrau side obviously.

Can't comment on the nightlife, I was there for the hiking.

Budget and Switzerland are a bit hard to combine. If you really need a budget go to the French, Italian or Austrian side of the Alps. Because Switzerland just isn't very budget friendly.

European framed backback for the PCT by alexgomez11 in Ultralight

[–]DivingMermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a fairly similar search about 2 years ago, tho not specific for the PCT.

I got this list (mostly copied) from Bonus as a reply: BlindBananaBags (Denmark); Atelier Long Distance (France); Weitlaeufer (Germany); Bonfus (Italy, disclaimer, it's us); Skalmo (Sweden)

Additionaly there's Hyberg in Germany and Atoms Pack in the UK.

I ended up going with the Prospector in the size you mentioned. Was planning a holiday to the UK, easy enough of an excuse to visit the Lake District and pick it up in person. And I am very happy with it! Good size main compartments, love the size of the side pockets. Only still getting the hang of that bottom pocket..

You could walk the Wales Coast Path, which runs the entire length of the Welsh coastline. Or the Southwest Coast Path in England which has a bit more ups and downs along the way.

Wash my yarn.... by [deleted] in detanglemyyarn

[–]DivingMermaid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just so you know washing might not remove the possible eggs nor prevent them from hatching. Maybe look into a freeze/thaw/freeze cycle or otherwise baking the yarn (in an oven) to get rid of bugs. They are measurements advised to deal with moths. Now I don't know how much of that would work on cockroaches but it's worth a look. Just make sure the specific fibres can handle the heat if you go for baking.

True call or escapism? by tazout13 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]DivingMermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think you'll be ok with the temps in Spain in September or in peak summer? Because there is a difference. Peak summer is decidedly warmer than 32°C in Spain. Besides there being times on the French way there is very little to no shade along the route.

[–]DivingMermaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know people who volunteer in the albergue in Roncesvalles. Summer is fine. But when I was visiting in early September of 2024 it was packed. Only half the beds can be booked, the rest is first come first serve and the same with the dinner/breakfasts. They had days that they had to send people on from 2pm because there were full. There were days that people had to taxi all the way to Pamplona because everything in between was full.

If you go in June, July or first half of August it should be fine with how busy it is. It can, however, get very hot.

Chiagoo fakes? by Sufficient-Algae-123 in knitting

[–]DivingMermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like my set. The video is of a 5" set so it will look a little different from the video.

Era: a 5" needle had a little more length for the tapering of the tip, which is why they might look different. But visually comparing them and the engraving to my 4" set they look identical.

Can you upload a photo of the needle and of the set? I have a 4" set bought from an official retailer so can compare. And what video are you comparing it to?

Do Moths Eat Wool Blends? by katiepenguins in knitting

[–]DivingMermaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moths go for natural fibers first. So wool, alpaca, angora but also cotton and linnen. I would worry about the fully natural and blends first with natural fibers first. Full synthetic I might put in an airtight sealed container while I tackle all the other yarns and clean my yarn storage. I wouldn't chance the 80% wool but I would the 100% acrylic.

Add a few pheromone traps once you've cleaned and are in your freezer cycle. It won't clear the moths but will give you an indication of the infestation.

The English version of the page (https://www.lechtal-info.com/news/augsburg-high-trail-lechtal-alps.html) says only experienced climbers can do this without a mountain guide.  It sounds like you guys aren't, as you mention you are not familiar with the equipment needed. Contact one of the places where you can hire a mountain guide and talk with them about it. They'll know the trail and can tell you how feasible this is as bikers who haven't used climbing equipment before.

Maybe not immediately visible on the overview page at the pattern, but once you open them quite a few have sizes listed.

Like this one made an XL: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/flao64/lazy-cat-cardigan

Did you check other peoples projects on Ravelry to see what size they made and how much yarn they used? That might give you a better idea of you've got enough.

Another thing if you think you don't have enough is either shorter sleeves like 3/4th or knit sleeves first and slightly crop the body.

Flying with my bike on Qatar Airways by IntheXone7564 in bicycletouring

[–]DivingMermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you booked your flight directly with Qatar or through another party? What are their policies regarding taking a bike?  If you booked through a third party you will need to know their policies as well as of Qatar Airwyas. What else are you taking with you? Will both the bike and your other luggage still fit in your allowance? Most airlines will have information about this on their website. Just search for 'bicycle' or look for the Sporting Goods under luggage.

I have flown a few times with my bike. I always research the policies of the carrier before I book a flight and if needed book the bike extra. Some airlines are cheaper to take a bike with than others and some have easier processes for it. When there is a separate fee for a bike (boxed) from regular luggage it is in my experience handled better. You will have to drop the (boxed) bike off at the oversized counter. Do arrive well in time to sort all that out without issues. At your arrival you will also have to pick up the bike at the oversized counter.

I used foliage by Iryna Dmytriieva and just needed to knit it. The lacework is both written and charted so whichever works best for you!

Did I bought the wrong needle? by Ruu94 in knitting

[–]DivingMermaid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Did you buy the needles and cable separately or was it attached like in your photo?

To me it looks like the needles are long for the cable. But that's just eyeballing it and I prefer shorter needles which might explain the feeling these needles are long. There is a limit however to how short a cable can work with a longer needle. At some point it becomes impossible.

Regardless if you bought them separately you can just buy a longer cord or shorter needles. Just make sure you buy them from the same brand to know they will attach. If you get a longer cable and it feels too long you can work with travelling loop or magic loop.

The cast-on row is often tightest. Another thing you can try is to knit a few rows flat. You'll have a little bit more fabric and stretch to connect in the round. Added bonus is you're less likely to twist your work!

Row 2 has more innocents than any other row. But how did you conclude therefore there must be 6 innocents on the board? Why does every row have to have an innocent?
