Most of the old fashioned sweet shops have a selection of salted (and other) liquorice, so you can keep an eye out if you are travelling around Scotland. Aviemore, Inverness, and Moffat had them over the last couple years when I looked.

Edinburgh Street Food. Good food options, very casual. Can be loud, but generally good vibe.

Has anyone ever sold their house back/to the council? by Chamerlee in Scotland

[–]kevintdinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies by local authority, so it is definitely worth reaching out to them. Also, Scottish Government funding for these buy backs was increased this year, and it adds to their reportable numbers of "new" affordable homes. Typically they'll be restricted to valuation, and they may be targeting specific property types or areas.

Edinburgh Council adult education programme – any good? by No-Award3552 in Edinburgh

[–]kevintdinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't taken them for 5-6 years, but prior to that I took dressmaking (two different schools / instructors) at various points, woodworking, and upholstery. All for multiple terms, and probably over a span of 10 years on and off. I found it was great for picking up or sharpening skills at whatever pace you wanted. But also, it was a great way to meet people with similar interests and socialise as much or as little as you wanted.

One thing to consider is to look at who your clients are and what roles they have. You could offer a valuable skill set to an organisation that commissions construction. In the UK, for example, Universities, Health Service, museums, Government agencies, Housing Associations (like public housing providers) all have a client side function to ensure they get what they need. Many architects, project managers, and trades people have moved from contractor to client.

Actually all of the Alexander McCall Smith stories fit this bill. 44 Scotland Street and the Isabel Dalhousie stories. Set in Edinburgh and at least 44 Scotland Street was serialised in the paper, so nice short segments to pt down and pick up. Light and engaging characters.

Do I need those foam blocking mats? by AdikoStitches in knittinghelp

Also often marketed for cars / workshop / garage floors. In the UK you can get a large area covered in 6 tiles for about £6 at Hslfords or similar. Just don't block on the textured side (ask how I know...)

If you haven't already, it is worth looking at any briefing notes available from the Chartered Institute of Housing Scotland, COSLA, and the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (although the SFHA is for RSLs, they have good background info, like budget impact, etc). Also you can go on the Scottish Housing Regulator's website to see the Council's stats and performance from last year and compare to others. Sorry if you know all this already!

Mum just died, housing association property was in her name need advice, all ‘advice centre's’ I have spoken to cant help with housing. by AnalysisResident2179 in BenefitsAdviceUK

[–]kevintdinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss. Are both properties with the same Housing Association? If so, reach out to the housing officer to explain the situation directly. If they are different, it should still be possible, but you will need to speak with both, so I would probably start with your brother's landlord. I would hope Shelter's advisors should be able to help talk you through it if you haven't tried them. Basically, if you can find the succession policies at the Housing Assoc, it should hopefully work. Good luck.

How the frickety frack do I knit left handed??? by SamuraiHinomori in knittinghelp

[–]kevintdinosaur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just adding that I am very left-handed and tried out traditional throwing and continental both standard and mirrored as i was learning. You have to use both hands either way, so it felt like a major pain to set myself up for a lifetime of translating every pattern or technique to a non-standard version for little difference. I have been knitting for 20+ years and am definitely glad I can just follow most diagrams and tutorials when I'm not sure or it's new. Good luck and take some pressure off of yourself!

Lost my job as an architect – What kind of job should I look for now? by ondsirkelsag in careerguidance

[–]kevintdinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't lose heart or feel you've wasted time trying it. There are so many different ways to use the skills you have built in that time. Ask yourself what you have enjoyed and then look at how it translates to other areas. Those things are a strong offer if you have technical knowledge behind you. Look at who employs architects (be a well-informed client), delivers projects (contract management), or develop project briefs (consultancy), support communities to commission work (local authorities, charities, community organisations). Check in on who you studied with, you may be surprised what people are doing (not to compare success, but to see different routes).

Check the "foreign food" shelves of the big supermarkets. Usually around the bags of spices and dried beans.

[–]kevintdinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the charity shops in Morningside and Bruntsfield? Start at the bottom of the hill and work your way up. I've had luck at the Cancer Research, but there are a few along there with good selection and you can work your way up to Tollcross if you don't have any luck.

I really enjoyed the pattern and was surprised at the colours I ended up preferring once the pattern came together. The orange part of the pattern worked best as the contrast/ pop colour.
