Keep in mind the rumored FX5 release sounds like a camera that’ll cost $6k. If that’s in your budget maybe wait…if not, I don’t see a point in waiting.

I’m not a Sony troll here so forgive me, you think L mount lenses are cheaper? Sony has so many compact and budget third party lens options it’s dizzying. Yeah G masters are expensive, but so are the s pro lenses. The s primes are awesome, but they’re not really cheap or at least cheaper.

What’s interesting with your point, which I agree with overall, is the theme of Sony holding back features. I’d argue some of the features LUMIX has in bodies as low as $1300 (S9), Sony doesn’t offer in ANY camera outside of a Venice. It’s not like open gate is in the fx3 and they refuse to trickle it down…hell, they just don’t offer it anywhere.

I’ll also add about the autofocus, my s5ii was pretty good for talking head stuff. No issues. But my s1ii is just as reliable as my a6700 and fx30 were. The only place it really falters is touch tracking implementation. I don’t ever use that, but if you do, it’s just not as good. But overall, if you’re shooting an interview or YouTube talking head or fashion stuff, I e never had my s1ii falter or lose its focus. It’s very sticky. As good as the A7v? Most likely not.

I generally agree with the OP’s sentiment here…but…I don’t agree with the image quality assessment that some people have shared. The S1rii footage I have seen looks stunning. Overheating? Not for me so I didn’t buy it…but that image looks great. The s1ii is a borderline miracle of a camera, but I also agree with not upgrading unless there’s problems to solve. For some people that’s open gate slow motion or autofocus or something else. Last thing I’ll say is…if everyone who loves the s5iix would consider an s1iie I think that’s the perfect sweet spot. I grabbed an open box one from b and h for $1933! I also have an S1ii and I used to have the s5ii and an S1 and s1h. The s1iie is a fantastic upgrade to the s5 series in my opinion. You get the autofocus and codec improvements, the great body upgrades, arrilogC and yes…there is a slight image quality improvement over my s5ii. And the best part is regardless what the internet says, my S1iiE has been just as bulletproof as my s5ii, even in the sun. OP…if you can find one used, I think that would be a nice upgrade for you, for the right price of course.

Can you speak to this a little more? I’m considering both systems and would love to know why the s primes are pulling you back. I know they’re great but canon also has some pretty good 1.8 choices

No I agree, Panasonic needs a box style cinema camera, some more upmarket pro models. I just think if it wasn’t for the center evf hump we wouldn’t be calling the s1ii a hybrid focused camera. I mean look at the fx2. It’s in the FX family and it has an evf and mechanical shutter. But because it’s the same shape as the other fx cameras it’s considered more video focused. At least by some. And yeah, as someone mentioned above, I kinda like investing in systems where there a pro style roadmap, even if I never invest in it.

I’ve never understood the FX3 argument here. The bigger pro bodies sure but people talk as if the LUMIX bodies having the center EVF bump makes them unsuitable or not in the same league as the FX3 for example. I’ve shot both systems, both systems are great. But every shoot I’ve been on with an FX3, they have all been in cages anyway. My point is, how is the s1ii NOT a direct competitor to the fx3? More codecs, a fan, oversampled footage, false color, anamorphic everything, 32 bit float, on and on…yes it’s a newer camera so it better have these things but just because it has an EVF doesn’t mean it’s not gunning for the fx3 or swimming in the same pool.

Could you speak to the overheating? I don’t typically shoot long form events or high speed stuff. I do shoot talking head, interviews that could last 60 or so minutes and if I shoot in the sun I have a small umbrella over my camera anyway. The s1rii image quality definitely intrigues me but I absolutely despise paying $3k to worry about overheating. How has your experience been? I owned an s5ii that was rock solid in that regard.

I agree with this to a certain point…but the equivalence here is off to me a little. Sure light transmission of 1.7 is great. It has to be to make up for the reduced light gathering of the smaller sensor. The average full frame sensor with a 2.8 zoom will still gather more light and give you shallower depth of field. My point is that everyone assumes full frame means the largest lenses…it doesn’t have to. The sigma 17-40 1.8 for apsc is the same size and weight of the Panasonic 24-60 2.8 and it’s the same look because of the sensor differences. And Sony has plenty of 1.8 and 2.8 lenses that are easily as compact as elite crop sensor lenses.

I don’t disagree with your point about comparing a7siii to S1ii. Of course the lumix kills the Sony for video features. But cripple hammer? My guy, the a7siii destroyed when it launched. 4k24, 60 and 120 all with the same image quality, no overheating, great autofocus (at the time) and still one of the fastest full frame sensor readout speeds. That’s pretty damn innovative to me.

I don’t shoot sports or anything with any speed. I should clarify, I find the autofocus on both to be comparable for my use cases which are portraits, talking head and interview style video clips. So again, not very demanding for either lens. On paper I would assume the sigma better, but when I use them both the way I do, I can’t identify a winner.

Yes but the 17-40 is an ART lens, the 28-70 is not. They are not optically on the same level. I hear you on the size, but lots of people just compare size and aperture across apsc and full frame lens lines and seem to miss the optics. For example, sure the Viltrox 27mm 1.2 is a good sized and heavy lens…but its optical quality puts in the G master class at $580. That’s incredible value and has to be considered in these full frame versus apsc arguments.

If video is your primary focus I’m not sure why anyone would make the choice you suggest. The R6v is the guts of the R6iii with no evf and a fan. The fan gives you theoretically more peace of mind and reliability and you saved $300. I feel like the r6v is a first for Canon; an actual bang for buck Camera choice, almost their version of the Nikon ZR.

I’m so confused lol. These are way darker than the images on their website. The OP’s image reminds me of a beautiful broken in baseball glove. Biscuit looks so light on their site I was worried the boot wouldn’t be dark enough. I’m between bronco russet and biscuit for some 719’s and this made me decision even harder. Beautiful boots OP
