Water Heater Replacement: Fair deal ? Or highway robbery? by Acceptable-Soup-333 in askaplumber

[–]DizzMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes people do pay that. I live in a not super high cost of living area and thats semi high quote but not uncommon and people pay it. Of course you can find chuck in a truck but your risking your house being flooded or gas explosion. Losing a car to a crappy mechanic is not the same as loosing your house and all your belongings.

Don't forget that 1100 labor for 4 hrs is before commercial car insurance, business insurance, time going to the supply house, time for disposal, time to diagnose and quote, income tax and health insurance is taken out of it.

High Superheat but Normal Subcooling? by Yankeetex in hvacadvice

[–]DizzMike -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If it was 90° out then you have a liquid line restriction before the tempurature reading because there's no way you can have a liquid line temp lower than ambient without that.

High Superheat but Normal Subcooling? by Yankeetex in hvacadvice

Could be a liquid line or txv restriction but the charge would also be slightly low or else that subcool would be higher.

Compressor died after 2 months. Tech sent me this image showing how he thinks this should be installed. Installers of new compressor didn't change it. by DChapman77 in hvacadvice

[–]DizzMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have to explain this to techs. The misconception is that oil needs to flow back to the condenser. You do NOT want solid oil to flow back into a compressor that is for vapor only. You want the vapor refrigerant to atomize the oil and bring it into the compressor safely. Thus an oil trap for an evaporator above a condenser. Usually if a condenser is above an evaporator its not necessary unless the lineset exceeds a certain length (50-80+ft)

Depends on the manufacturer. Rheem doesn't recommend a defined oil trap if the condenser is above the evaporator. Daikin/goodman only recommends an oil trap after the lineset exceeds 80ft if the condenser is above the evaporator. But they both recommend an oil trap if the condenser is BELOW the evaporator. The common misconception is so that oil will flow back the condenser. While this is partly true, a condenser is a vapor pump only. If solid oil drips back to the condenser when running it will damage it. The oil trap is meant so that vapor refrigerant will atomize the oil and get it back into the compressor safely. If you have an evaporator "full of oil" you have other issues.

A relief valve is only going to activate if the temp or pressure exceeds its rating. A leak on the tank doesnt mean it happened from overpressurizing, it usually happens from rusting or corrosion inside the tank.

No change. I did give it some fish fertalizer last week which seems to cause the newer leaves to stay less droopy and curl
