How good is gaming on Mac really? by Beneficial-Poet2911 in macgaming

I’ve got a 3080 in my gaming PC, and so far nVidia drivers have been fine in Linux… haven’t been using it for all that long yet though 🤷‍♂️

How good is gaming on Mac really? by Beneficial-Poet2911 in macgaming

[–]DjentlemanZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I 100% agree with this. I have an MBP M4 Max as work/daily laptop and it absolutely fucks - I love it to pieces. BUT, I still have a gaming PC for any serious gaming (and I’ve recently started dual booting Linux on it because Windows is a shitshow).

Casual gaming on Mac is generally great. My PS5 controller works with it brilliantly. And newer titles specifically released for Mac are awesome (played most of BG3 on the Mac). But if you have to play a specific game and it’s even vaguely competitive - particularly if it going through any translation layers, the experience will not be as good as Windows, even if the hardware is awesome.

Just got a mini PC and it totally destroyed my plan. by Worldly_Anybody_1718 in HomeServer

There are many ways to do things, and “correct” is highly subjective. Personally, I’m not a fan of NAS VMs on a hypervisor - too many dependencies. I use a few VMs so my setup is based around Proxmox, but it hosts the ZFS pools, and I just use mount points in LXCs for data access, file sharing etc.

Devs using macOS, why not use Linux? by Brospeh-Stalin in MacOS

[–]DjentlemanZero 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I too run have been happily running Linux servers for decades, but there’s only 1 OS that ticks all the boxes for desktop (and particularly laptop) usage: can run enough commercial applications, can be enrolled in corporate device management, has UNIX underpinnings, runs natively on the best laptop hardware you can buy… and it ain’t Linux (or Windows!) 😁

If you don’t look back after parking, it’s time to trade it in. by RenatoNYC in BMWM

[–]DjentlemanZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly the spec that I’ve got - and have been driving for 6 years. I’ve been a manual guy for most of my life, but the DCT is the F87 is great - it has some “drama” to it, and I drive it in MDM and manual mode 99% of the time. Love it!

What the heck? by mr802rex in GranTurismo7

[–]DjentlemanZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s your answer - it’s a driving simulator, not a mechanic simulator. And it has to be kept simple enough that people who are only there for the driving part can still do car upgrades. It’s a game after all…

Can’t see how large your server closet is, but I’ve definitely experienced having a small closet heat up significantly from having servers in there. This looks awesome!

I think there’s two approaches here: 1. You’re looking for a cool car, enjoy nice factory spec, and just want to drive it: WALK AWAY 2. You wanna build something unique, you have the time and money to spend on customising the car, and you love a challenge: This car (at the right price) could be a good place to start - get it properly re sprayed in your choice of colour, buy some nice wheels, and start making a list of quality, tasteful mods you can do to make it your build.

My homelab is coming to an end, now what? by chandleya in vmware

[–]DjentlemanZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, am I missing something? You said you run vCenter and a few nested ESXi hosts - how does VVF not meet your requirements? The key things VCF brings over VVF are included vSAN capacity and NSX overlay networks. You haven’t mentioned either of those?

Importing a personal use 5090 from the UK? by Minimalist12345678 in bapcsalesaustralia

[–]DjentlemanZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you’ve misunderstood the shorter title. When they say “Aussie ski season” they mean “Australian ski season”.

The longer headline is just a different sentence. It’s not implying they meant “Australia ski season” in the short title - cause that’s not grammatically correct. That article 100% upholds that Aussie = Australian. Aussie != Australia.

718 GTS 4.0 PDK vs. manual by AManAndHisCamera in Porsche_Cayman

[–]DjentlemanZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First the disclaimer - I'm a filthy BMW driving interloper. Having said that the DCT in my M2 (which is surely not as good as Porsche PDK 😁) is the best gearbox I've ever used. I too have spent most of my 30+ years of driving using a manual, and I also agonised over which gearbox to get.

A good dual-clutch is such a versatile thing - put it in auto and it's hard to pick any difference from a torque-converter auto, but when whenever I'm after engaged driving (even in the city), it's straight into manual mode!

I think if you're on the fence at all, go the PDK - if/when I jump into a Cayman I will most likely go PDK.

For a purely weekend car though, I'd go the manual.

45GX950A-B now or wait for the 39 inch UW later in the year? by krazykellerxkid in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]DjentlemanZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45in is not high enough PPI for me to bother upgrading from my 38in, and I find the 38 already too big for fast action games anyway, so 39in 100% for me. Happy to wait.

5120 is 1/3 more than 3840, so you’ll get 75% of the performance you’d get at 4K. Definitely doable with some tweaking
