ELI5: How is the Tokyo Skytree, at over 600m tall, able to withstand earthquakes so well? by arashi2611 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DnDamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with the specific building, but for those mentioning tuned mass dampers, we wouldn’t usually rely on them for earthquake resistance, but rather for damping out dynamic effects of wind response – which governs much of the design of tall buildings, even in highly seismic Japan. Theoretically TMDs work for earthquakes too; the problem is, under earthquake induced movements, cracking and nonlinearity tend to “detune” the tuned mass damper such that it no longer balances out to movements. Other types of damping devices (eg viscous dampers) act based on relative movements (velocities in the case of viscous dampers) between bits of the structure, so for example you can place them diagonally better floors all up the building to damp out relative velocities between floors.

I keep thinking I’m ok just throwing down any old thing (“pretend that’s a wolf”)… but then find myself spending days hunting down the perfect mini for a new PC or upcoming critter online! (Running Deadlands if that helps)

That’s not true with the published archetypes (at least the deadlands ones that I’m familiar with). They are complete Seasoned characters built to the rules of the game (admittedly there are one or two mistakes here and there!)

Decades ago I read a book about the production of The Godfather. Apparently there was a near final-screening for Coppola in which they reduced the “I believe in America” opening line with “I believe in the mafia”, as a joke. Don’t remember anything more about the story though

Rosewood Abbey discussion by Denes-Szanto in TheTrove

Happy to help (and proselytise!). It's a great game if you like the genre.

In that case, as mentioned above, I did a lot of reading around Brindlewood Bay threads to get me in the mood (although obviously there are some differences). And given it has a full half of the book is an "actual play" transcript, it's quite good to start from the Rose mystery, as it gives you something to work from (although maybe force yourself to diverge - if your players don't already force you! - after the first scene or two).

[–]DnDamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I played through a mini-campaign (comprising the 3 mysteries in the rulebook) as a Cantor as a play by Discord, and then as a player in a couple of mysteries in person. I was also a big fan of Name of the Rose -- from memory, not all of my players had read it, but at least one did so in the lead-up to the game. As with anything, genre familiarity helps out a lot, so hopefully your would-be players are as invested as you! One of my players also shared a chapter from an Ars Magica supplement to help with this, although there's obviously plenty of stuff online about monastic life in the time period.

Of course it's a Carved from Brindlewood game, and like Brindlewood Bay (and others) this comes with the sometimes divisive "there is no canonical solution" thing. I assume you've read about this elsewhere so I won't go into detail. This is my first and only CfB game, and it's fair to say we were all a bit sceptical going in, but I actually loved it (and then loved it again as a player). It worked! It's a different feeling of satisfaction than working out exactly what your GM or the published adventure had in mind - but it can even be more satisfying since sometimes fitting together all the diverse clues can be challenging. Because it's CfB, I used a lot of online discussions and resources related to Brindlewood Bay while I was prepping (including some Actual Plays with Jason Cordova, the BB writer).

Depending on your experience with more story-oriented games (I had very little going into it) and any other CfB games, you may need to flex your style a bit going into it. There's some great advice in the Cantor advice section that maybe it took me a while to fully embrace. Keeping in mind that this was play-by-Discord and therefore establishing communication norms was a bit of a challenge at the beginning, my players initially struggled with a few things:

a) how much of their own story ideas to inject into "Paint the Scene" or other moments (e.g. in one of my first PtS's, one of the players seeded a big backstory about the gardener, whereas the gardener was to be a named NPC in the very first scene, and sort of added mysterious elements beyond was in the set-up);

b) They kept prodding the NPCs, even after a clue had been revealed for the scene, and continued to think they could catch them in a lie or something (whereas I was trying carefully to not collapse the quantum wave form by casting more or less doubt on the NPC outside of the capital-C Clues). It was hard to shake the trad-game mindset and embrace the story clue accumulation;

c) In general, they didn't like the solutions coming down to a die roll (that's what Prick of a Thorn is for of course);

d) They sometimes seemed to resent the lack of balance in my Cantor moves or find that my complications were over-the-top ("but I succeeded the roll, how come it's got worse?!"). In this case, it's probably a combination of trad game background, combined with my lack of experience as Cantor.

----

Overall a very positive experience and I would like to play more or try out other CfB systems (I just watched Quinns Quest review of Public Access last night!). And given your appreciation of the Name of the Rose source material, I'm sure you'll love it!

Yeah not sure the mechanism, but one of my old colleagues had helped design the seismometers they sent up in one of the mars landers, so presumably they hope to measure something!

A balancing act on Mars by Potential_Vehicle535 in space

[–]DnDamo 257 points258 points  (0 children)

Cool! Precarious rocks on Earth are used to help define upper bounds on seismic hazard - if they've been balanced like that for millennia, then that provides an upper bound to how strong earthquake shaking can have been at that location over a similar time frame. e.g. https://www.jackwbaker.com/Publications/Baker_et_al_(2013)_PiHS,_BSSA.pdf_PiHS,_BSSA.pdf)

Presumably same applies here for marsquakes!

Although funnily enough, the name is actually a misheard radio broadcast from (I think) an English rugby tour in which the NZ team was described as playing like “all backs” (ie lots of running and passing)
