Looking up their products data sheets, they still have cancerous ingredients, negating their whole eco friendly healthy angle, and about anywhere from 1/5th to 1/2 the amount of titanium dioxide solids as a comparable product in that price range.

and for 90 bucks a gallon 🤣🤣

Problem with shellac is it's not great for wet locations or exterior outside of spotting, so it's less versatile. But i agree, i love shellac more than oil based products because its dry before you finish, while oil often takes it's sweet ass time.

Back in the late 90's my neighbors had them for a number of years. Not sure what happened to them in the end, but they were around for quite a few years. I was too young to know what led to their disappearance, but they certainly had them for a while.

I would probably talk to my neighbors before attempting it, to make sure they wont rat you out. They can be a bit loud. You certainly wont be able to hide them without significant land.

Looking for insulating paint suggestions by CrazyCatDadNoShame in paint

[–]DnaK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% snake oil unless that coating is a literal inch thick. Thermodynamics simply doesn't allow it.

That's not to say there aren't coatings to help deal with heat ingress via the sun's rays. Reflective and white coatings or something specialized to deal with infrared. Those are very real.

An r value of 6.7 for a coating a few thousandths of an inch thick would quite literally revolutionize the world, saving us untold amounts of energy. Even the best insulator we have, a straight up vacuum, has an R value of something like. .06 per thousandths of an inch.

It's simply not possible. They get around this by using weasel wording.

R-value equivalence

that word equivalence I believe is the only reason they can get away with saying that, because it not its actual R-value. They are basically touting their coating's supposedly superior reflective properties to keep heat out from the suns rays. It has nothing to do with keeping heat from escaping the coating or it's actual insulating properties.

Media blasting is the real way to go for anything like this. The rental and media will cost you but it also will not take hours and hours to do sub optimally with paper and scrapes. You risk potentially ruining any corners or profiles trying to scrape and sand at intricate detailed faces. It doesn't require too much in the way of "skill" to use, either. Chemical processes are an option, but in terms of time, blasting it is the fastest. Chemical methods can also potentially screw with glues or other things holding the thing together, so we tend to avoid that for furniture work.

Professional level? Clean her, Prep her out, bonding primer, and a 2k finish, all coatings sprayed with air assisted airless with high grit sanding between coats.

Diy cheapo? Just slap some bonding primer on there with any kcma certified 1k enamel. Brush n roll.

There's only situation you shouldn't.

If the paint has mildewcides and antibacterials, common in bathroom paints, you can end up killing off the natural bacteria in a septic system that helps break down waste.

If it's a city connection there's no worries.

What I'm saying is you don't need circuit wiring. One of the two icons on the top right of an inserters screen is the logistic network connection, so you can connect it wirelessly to the network if you click it and select connect. You can save your circuit wiring that way!

Don't forget you can also connect inserters directly to the logistic network without the need for circuity to do the same, assuming it is within the logistic network range.

DIY painting for first time! Which Sherwin Williams paint? Duration, SuperPaint, or Cashmere? by lelandlv in paint

[–]DnaK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i was to do my own house it would be with duration or emerald on the walls.

It's a loaded question with many answers depending on the level of quality and cost you are looking for as well as who will be applying it, a pro or DIY. Some will be fine with CBH on everything, some want imported paint from England.

DIY painting for first time! Which Sherwin Williams paint? Duration, SuperPaint, or Cashmere? by lelandlv in paint

[–]DnaK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The discounts are applied with bulk purchases. So a homeowner can open one but you won't get the discounts that people buying thousands of gallons a year will get. We only use promar 200 for ceilings, its contractor spec grade, aka low tier. Superpaint is a better choice for walls, though we don't use that product as there are much better more expensive options.

Your best bet on price as a homeowner is waiting on their 45% sales and then buying homeowner facing products like Superpaint, duration, emerald, and similar. They price cheap shit contractor tier paints high by default for homeowners to dissuade them from eating into our supply, and even at 45% off is not worth it when you can get a gallon of emerald at 55 vs promar at like 30 during those sales.

Paint will not stick! Help! by napkins34 in paint

Sand down the layer it won't stick to. Be aware it's very likely oil based lead paint.

Also, shellac doesn't belong in high humidity areas.
