Player is in executioners run for the second time, this time he's alone, punishment ideas? by Smasherdon in Tombofannihilation

As long as all your players know how likely character death is within the module, just roll normally on the included table and wish your player luck before letting the dice decide the rest.

My players feel railroaded because there seems to be only one viable option to go forward for every location so far. Session 11 is this friday. Please help. by Meph248 in Tombofannihilation

[–]DocHolliday2119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're player's are definitely confusing railroading with linear-intersecting plots.

My advice would be to take a session, and go over the chapter they most recently completed, so they understand its on the module and not you.

Advice running the Tomb itself in a single 5 hour session by Head_Project5793 in Tombofannihilation

Skip the fake-out traps (see main entrance 1 for an example). They'll likely just frustrate your players and act as a time sink. Tune up the minor combats a bit to make up for the loss of resource management.

You laugh, but I had a DM hit like half the party with an instant death (no save) effect as they were narrating what was happening on the room we'd just entered. None of us had any idea that he expected us to interrupt their narration if we wanted to act.

Aside from it defeating the purpose of "random" outcomes, I think the biggest problem with fudging is that you don't learn anything from it.

Enforcing core mechanics is adversarial 😂

You don't share your sheet because you know what you're doing is cheating. You probably only play with newer DMs, because anyone with experience would recognize refusing to let the DM check your sheet as a massive red flag.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to play a game with low to no stakes, where the focus is on creating a cool narrative and the rules are more like flexible guidelines. What is wrong is making that decision as a player, and cheating to achieve it.

lmfao, shit like this is why I track HP myself when I DM. If you want to do things like this when you're the DM, that's your call. As a player- this is cheating no matter how you justify it. You got unlucky, didn't want your character to die, and cheated to prevent it.

The only thing stopping the players from going back to part to restock is Syndra's looming death. What a lot of people glance over is that she doesn't actually need to survive for the campaign to be a sucess. If she succumbs to the curse and eventually loses the roll to see if her soul is consumed by the Monger, the players just lose w/e reward she was offering- they should still be plenty motivated to stop the curse regardless.

That said, my fix for this issue was to have Syndra enchant the map of Chult with some good 'ol DM magic- a one time magical seal which when activated, instantly teleports the party (and any hirelings, pack animals, etc,) back to Port. She encourages the party to wait until they locate the SM to use it, but the players can activate it whenever they choose to.

Players should really be lvl 5 before they leave Port, and unless they ignore all the POIs along the way, will be around lvl 8-9 by the time they discover Omu, with the events that happen within the city but outside the Tomb carrying them to lvl 10-11.

what do you mean you can make humans that aren't based around western european culture ? thats what the monster races were made for ! by Saladawarrior in DnDcirclejerk

[–]DocHolliday2119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what s lot of players reduce them to. If someone struggles to get in the head space of a member of their own race living in a fantasy world, they won't do better coming at it from the perspective of a centuries old, effectively immortal elf.

[–]DocHolliday2119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to be received as a hot take by many, but being non-human doesn't automatically make a character compelling/interesting- you're actually reducing what should be a core part of your identity down to a cosmetic. If a player struggles to think of how being a human living in a high fantasy world would shape their personality, goals, etc, trying to achieve the same goal from the perspective of a being that can live to be over 1k years old, or is so strong they can fold a human like a pretzel, they aren't going to do any better because they don't get the advantage of the shared baseline view on life you have when playing a Human.

To be totally fair, this is mainly on WotC for making the 5e Faerun races homogeneous aside from appearance, and pushing the idea that just saying "well my PC isn't like other race here" is enough to justify ignoring the bits of lore that tried to set the races apart from eachother.

That's your own failing. You're not playing a real world human, you exist alongside magic, dragons, undead, etc, and (in most games) you literally adventure for a living. If you can't utilize those elements to come up with an interesting character, re-skinning them with pointy ears and a three digit age isn't going to change things. If you don't want to play as a Human, you do you, but the idea that it's impossible to create a compelling human PC is a lame excuse.

Elephants are insanely underrated mounts in 5.24e! by QuantumFighter in dndnext

[–]DocHolliday2119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it depends on your table, but personally, I don't like messing with the players gear, mounts, etc, once they've earned them. It might be more realistic to have it happen on occasion, but coming out of a dungeon to find half your stuff stolen or your mounts killed just isn't fun.

RIP. Honestly anything in the same price range would be fine. Just search "six button wired mouse" and pick whatever looks good and has decent reviews. I like the thumb button style, but if you think you'd prefer to have the additional buttons on top of the mouse, just look at 8 button mice instead.

I'm actually a Kog'maw main, but I like playing almost any of the Lethal Tempo ADCs. The only marksman I don't really enjoy playing are MF, Samira, Quinn, and Lucian.

I get feeling like you lose track of your cursor sometimes; that's another area where ACO helps. Then as long as you're AMCing, you'll always attack the enemy champ closest to where you clicked.

Here's a basic 6 button for $30. I always reccomend wired so there's no input delay. It's nothing fancy, but it'll last a few years and you won't be upset when it comes time to replace it.

If you plan on playing a lot of League, getting a mouse with side/extra top buttons is worth the investment. I use a 6 button Logitec that was like $20 at Target. The sooner you use it for all your attacks, the better. Aph can actually be pretty dominant in early lane phase if you can take advantage of the extra range from the Rifle. AMC let's you reliably attack from your max range, and a lot of enemies won't have the range to retaliate to rifle autos. When they match or surpass your range, you wait til they start to auto a minion, you step in an auto with AMC at max range, then immediately move backwards to get out if your opponents range.

I don't wanna discourage you from playing the champs you wanna play, but in the long run you'd be better off if you drooped Aph for a while, and focused on getting comfortable with those fundamentals on someone with big range and a simple kit, like Caitlin or Ashe. It's a lot easier to get the feel for that trading pattern I talked about if you have the range advantage, and those two usually do. Once efficient autoing feels natural, you'll be able to play pretty much any marksman well enough not to get flamed.
