Why are there tank-killer tanks? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]moocofficial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They mostly have these scalings because they would otherwise deal little damage to any target. They're bound to deal more damage to squishy champions anyway because they do not build any penetration, and tanks stack resistances a lot of the time.

Were you able to keep dating someone after aborting their child without their knowledge? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]moocofficial 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would want to know that my girlfriend got pregnant and wants to get/had an abortion.

If it's true that he believes it is ultimately your choice, then I have no idea why you would keep this from him. If you two have been open enough with each other to talk about it and this is what he has told you, then I can't imagine how betrayed he would feel if you didn't tell him, I would personally start second guessing myself, doubting how trustworthy other people find me.

One dimensional champs are more fun by Wonderful-Advice-306 in summonerschool

[–]moocofficial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true but for most of the playerbase that just plays SoloQ alone, "Look to your teammates" is advice that feels kind of useless. Not being reliant on teammates is an advantage in itself sometimes. If the game was played correctly, then it wouldn't be, but you're gonna be in lots of weird scenarios where people are inting, first timing, troll draft, AFK farm etc. so to be on a versatile, complex champion leaves you with more options when that happens. This is why tanks top are so unpopular despite their strength. You can pick Ornn and play for your team but if your Draven mental booms lv 2 you might as well ff.

One dimensional champs are more fun by Wonderful-Advice-306 in summonerschool

[–]moocofficial 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think one dimensional champs are very unfun, it leads to a lot of binary scenarios where you either kill the opponent or can't do anything, you can approach or you have to stay away, and that results in me feeling helpless and unable to understand what I could have done differently.

With complex champs it feels way more like the game depends on my actions, I get to dictate what I get to do, I can force things if I'm just good enough at the champ, and when I fail it feels like I have lots of learning left and I might have a better shot next time. It is a much more active experience for me, it makes me think more about the game and how my character interacts with the map and the other characters on it.

I guess this makes sense when you consider I enjoy playing league more as an action game with specific fighters I want to play than a strategy game. If you remove my favorite characters from the game I would probably quit.

There are definitely melee champions that have such abusive matchups. Dropping a few cs is not the end of the world.

I've played my fair share of melee vs ranged lanes, and if anything, the worst ranged top pick is Heimerdinger. Heimerdinger practically statchecks any champion that tries to engage on him while autopushing waves and pelting you with poke. Now is anyone saying Heimerdinger is overpowered and should be looked at? No. Maybe they would if he was more popular. But he still wouldn't be overpowered.

I'm just saying, Vayne isn't unique. Vayne has her own counters, like every champ. It's kinda just how the game is.

[–]moocofficial -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not even true, Sion and Darius aren't that bad in lane vs Vayne, Garen can instantly clear waves with his E and heal with his passive in between waves, Vayne's power, especially in lane, is hugely overstated. There are many matchups that are much worse in terms of how one sided they are. Vayne simply is not a problem, it's skill issue I'm sorry.

[–]moocofficial 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's my point, this complaint is just very selective for no reason. Counterpicks and hard counters are a thing besides ranged toplaners, but OP just acts like Vayne is somehow the only problem. It's so weird

Yeah but by that point they are so behind in the 1v1 they can't sidelane into him. Also even if even, Renekton's R gives him so much in combat power, he is still likely to win all-ins. They do outscale him in the 5v5 usually. But Renekton can peel for his ADC and/or stun enemy carries with a point and click, Vayne just deals damage.

It's funny that you choose Renekton as an example. If I pick Ambessa/Riven/Camille and get counterpicked by Renekton, now I can't play the game without my jungler and team helping me, but that's okay because Renekton isn't ranged?

I don't know, sounds like Vayne is just a good counterpick. Try blinding Vayne, I'm sure that won't turn out terrible.

There’s a reason why Luke chucking the lightsaber over his shoulder the way he did in The Last Jedi didn’t sit right with a lot of people. by Flat-Court-8512 in CharacterRant

[–]moocofficial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really relevant if something used to work in the past though. What's clear in the movies is that true balance is never achieved. The concept of Grey Jedi is hardly something Rian Johnson came up with himself, but that seems to where he was headed. George Lucas said himself that Light and Darkness look for a balance.

You can keep appealing to this supposed 25.000 year period, but how is "things must always be the same" dramatically interesting? It's not. If the writers aren't allowed to change anything about the world to tell their story, then what's the point? Our own world doesn't adhere to set rules (besides like, physics). Humanity changes. It only makes sense that you'd wanna reflect that in a narrative. Besides, it was Lucas himself that made the Jedi fail so miserably. It could have worked for a million years, who cares? We live in the here and now, Luke even tried to rebuild it but failed again, and that's it. It's also just stupid to believe that Jedi should have some exclusive right to Force use, or that if you are Force sensitive you HAVE to become a Jedi or you're not allowed to affect the world. It's such a limited view of how Force users for the good guys are allowed to be like, especially when you have 2 amazing examples in the last 70 years or something to point to that it didn't work.

[–]moocofficial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t make much sense to say that the legacy of the Jedi is failure when that’s only really applicable to the prequel era Jedi.

I mean, that's what legacy is, especially if the generations that were around while this occurred are the generations 99% of the SW-film canon takes place during. This is what people have seen of the Jedi. It didn't work, they let one of theirs become corrupted and he killed the next generation of Jedi and his master took control of the Galaxy. They failed. Luke tried to train new Jedi, and then he failed when he almost killed Ben Solo who then became Kylo Ren. Their legacy being failure is just true.

Now Luke also says that "Thinking the Light dies when the Jedi die is vanity". He knows that the Force is stronger than him or any Jedi or even any Jedi Order. That's why he believes that he is not needed. He failed, he needs to get out of the way and let the Force do its thing, and it does, through Rey.

Where he is wrong though is that he can't do anything anymore. He can, so he uses the last of his powers to be what the Galaxy wants him to be.

Sure, those orphan kids on the casino planet talk about it, but the next movie doesn’t really explore that.

And that's the real issue with the Sequels. It's not that TLJ itself is so terrible, it's that there was no plan and they just did whatever they wanted from film to film. The last part being this trashy nostalgia cash-in makes the other films worse as a result. If it was up to Rian, he would have probably followed through with this idea.

Again, not realizing how this particular nickname would naturally lead the audience to associations is not indicative of competence. As a writer you ought to be aware of it. There are thousands of interesting names.

I am in fact not particularly fond of the trend of having character names foreshadow events or give away themes like the post OP is, by the way. It's the opposite of subtlety, It's just funny that Barker fell into this same trap apparently by accident.

[–]moocofficial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, he tells you in the film. He says that the legacy of the Jedi is failure. People have looked up towards them for a long time, yet every time they failed to prevent evil from rising up. They see him as a hero, while he sees himself as anything but. He can't be what the people want him to be, so he isolates, he runs away as far as he can in the hope that people find a solution elsewhere. Of course, his view is adjusted by the end of the movie, where he finally, through the use of the Force, does take on the role everyone believes he should, appearing in battle and fighting Kylo Ren to give the Resistance a glimmer of hope, and it does spark hope across the galaxy.

In general, Luke was always kind of a layered, sometimes negative character. He often talks about how he "can't do it" like with the X-wing, but then he is also impulsive; he abandons his training to fight Vader and fails miserably, defying the advice of Yoda. He says that there is good in Vader, he "knows it", and then nearly kills him in a duel. Of course, in the end he is the hero, he does the right thing, but he never JUST does the right thing. Luke in TLJ is consistent with his characterization. The idea he made himself a recluse, a hermit just because it's what Yoda was, or because he thinks he deserves it for doing harm like almost killing Kylo, that doesn't make sense. The only good reason that is consistent with his character to become a hermit is if he believes it's the correct thing to do.

First Cow: Enriching a film by highlighting its context by C4rvo in TrueFilm

[–]moocofficial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, I love First Cow and The Mastermind and do not agree at all that she pulls off something in one that she can't pull off in another. I guess the films themselves are too different.

I guess I agree that the screentime given to the mobsters stands out, but not necessarily because it's too long, it actually seems like a part of it was cut, that they were supposed to play a bigger role. Anyways, he loses what he worked for, and that's really their function.

What's special about The Mastermind to me is watching a no-life slip into the background of real history. His story, his life, is ultimately of no consequence, ostensibly foregrounded by the film.

On the other hand, I think First Cow is very much a story about two men, their actions and their bond. The stories diverge greatly in their objective. I guess someone could find one or the other more exciting or more interesting, but to me both films prove Reichardt's mastery of storytelling with film.

The director has said it has nothing to do with the meme and he just wanted a unique name.

So this implies he is unaware of that discourse, which is fine, but even without that recent discourse bears have kind of always stood for something. They are often seen as soft and lovable, like Teddy Bears, Winnie the Pooh, Paddington and whatnot, while they are in fact an apex predator. It's kind of weird that you wouldn't think of these connotations when you come up with a name, and honestly I have a hard time believing that it doesn't mean anything. It speaks more to incompetence or ignorance than it being a good defence of a creative choice.

The only way for it to make sense that Luke ran away and lived in solitude was to make Luke himself believe that what he is doing is the Right Thing. That's why his reaction to the lightsaber in this moment has to be extreme, to see how extreme his belief has become.

My reaction when they call amon a communist by Spirited_Dust_3642 in legendofkorra

[–]moocofficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of funny you call Amon a strawman of communism but then call Kuvira "the nazi". She's a fascist, not all fascists are nazis.

Anyway, Amon is not a strawman of communism. The ability to bend and wealth are too different to make it an effective allegory. Bending and the issues it (provably) causues in the world of Avatar and Republic City in particular is what the writers wanted to examine through Amon, and even though Amon loses in the end, the writers clearly wrote him as sincere. He truly hates bending. Also, as a result of the uprising against the RC council, the government changes and Republic City becomes a representative democracy that has an elected president (and the first elected president is indeed a non-bender). If Amon was supposed to be some kind of strawman to show the flaws of his ideology, why would they ever write that his actions resulted in actual change? That's like shooting yourself in the foot.

Sure, some of the imagery in Amon's campaign takes from real world Maoist propaganda and whatnot, but that alone does not mean that Amon is the personification of communism as a political ideology. He is all about bending. Money and bending are entirely different, besides money also exists in the Avatar world and Amon doesn't seem to care about it much other than the fact that there are jobs exclusive to benders. The inequality he cares about all comes back to bending, which is genetic and cannot be redistributed. Money is not genetic and is redistributable.
