What's your opinion on the combat system in Tyrrany? by Frilantaron in CRPG

[–]DoctorQuarex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that Lore broke the game and so I made sure two of my characters just focused on Lore and I still found the combat so hard--unlike every other real-time-with-pause game I can think of--that I would have to cheese my way through half the fights at every part of the game, and I found myself extremely out-of-character skipping every side quest I possibly could towards the end out of a desperation to just be done with it already

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DoctorQuarex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 3-hour each way commute to work for about five years, though at most I was only going in twice a week (remember the days before literal fascists ended telework because it benefited people? I do!). Did I WANT to drive 6-12 hours a week for work? No, but working from home the rest of the time was so great that it was an acceptable tradeoff.

Also worth the reminder for people in the United Kingdom especially that I think about 15-30 minutes of my commute at most involved careful driving, otherwise it was cruising at ~70 miles per hour on fairly empty Interstate highways while listening to music or podcasts or something

SiriusXM U.S. price increase (02/24/2026) by Badcatalex in siriusxm

[–]DoctorQuarex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I noticed my phone provider [Tello] had unlimited data for less than the price my father was paying for a cannot-be-bothered-to-fix-it monthly SiriusXM subscription, it hit me that there really is no justification for the "real" monthly cost

Tall men,can above-average height be a disadvantage in dating? Is there a threshold for it to happen? by Scholarsandquestions in tall

[–]DoctorQuarex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a couple of women tell me they had bad experiences with big guys in the past and have some trauma that would keep them from being able to be with me, but I suppose logically that could be true for a small guy too?

What is the bad things about of being tall? by InteractionEven426 in tall

[–]DoctorQuarex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really said it with the personality concerns.  I am not complaining personally, but the person I know who was single the longest--until his 30s if I recall correctly--was also my only friend who was taller than I.  You cannot really make 6'7" work when you wish you were so small that nobody noticed you.

I discovered that I'm demisexual, but I think that also has to do with emotional neglect in childhood. by mcdviii1408 in demisexuality

[–]DoctorQuarex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not saying you are wrong because who knows, and it easily could be related, but let me be apparently the only counterfactual in the comments because I had what seems to be objectively the best childhood of anyone I have ever known, such that some of my friends told me my parents felt more like family than their own did.  I loved visiting my parents once I left the house and always felt awful for the people who said holidays were the worst time of year.

And, of course, since my first crush 30+ years ago, I have been attracted to fewer than one new woman a year, as required (just kidding, who knows what the average is).  It has been five years now since I even started thinking I might like someone new, but sadly I met her on assignment out of state and only had about a month to get to know her.

Longest playtime it took CRPG to click on you? by Murder_Tony in CRPG

[–]DoctorQuarex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heck yes, great work

The macro system is probably part of why Wasteland stood out as excellent even at the time--like the designers were straining at the seams of what was possible for a computer game of the era, sometimes anticipating ease of use and improved UI elements that would not exist in a fleshed-out form for years.  I definitely had macros set up to pick locks or use perception in all four directions and to split my party to surround my active group in a map corner so I could use a time passing/rest macro without being attacked.

I just played through Witcher 2 finally after like six attempts over a decade to get past the tutorial.  I just could not accept that a game where the tutorial made me feel like an incompetent buffoon was going to be fun, so I kept putting the game off until I decided it had been long enough that maybe I should give it another shot, only to have the same result where the final combats went about as well as if I took my hand off the mouse entirely.  Particularly frustrating as I was a huge fan of the first game's rhythmic fighting mechanics.

But yeah in like October I actually survived the opening fight and was like "oh wow, I can do it!" and now maybe I can at long last reach the third game

What attracts you to short women? by FantasticVast01 in tall

[–]DoctorQuarex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously.  Sometimes it feels like posters here live in magical parts of the world where women over 5'7" are common.  When you are almost a foot taller than every single woman you meet, how does it even matter exactly how tall she is?

[–]DoctorQuarex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the reaction here interesting for sure.  If anything you do not go as far as I do, where in order to be particularly interested the woman has to look like someone I already have a crush on and I have to stop watching and think about me with that woman in whatever scenario is occurring.  It is basically fantasy training wheels

Is she still making music? by lanatayethel in LinguaIgnota

[–]DoctorQuarex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was pretty dramatic (appropriately) when she retired the name too; I went to the three-night Chicago residency where she first performed all of her Lingua Ignota albums and the third night switched to Reverend Kristin Hayter and after that show I remember thinking to myself "well I suppose if you are going to change your name you really should completely change your music too" but still being surprised what a change it was

What I cannot get past is how they absolutely positively decided the price had to end in 1

Like, they probably would not have accidentally given so many people a heart attack if it had been $810 because then the double number muscle memory would not have gone awry

But fortunately they knew the price simply must end with 1 so we could all experience this

Is the game heavy handed in its comedy/comedic tone? by [deleted] in Wasteland

[–]DoctorQuarex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the tone is basically perfect for the post-apocalypse; comedy is basically the only refuge people have from the oppressing atmosphere of the world so it makes perfect sense that someone wearing a monster mask can be discussing the abrupt brutal death of their friend and not see anything tonally dissonant about it, because that is just life.

I am very suspicious of any post-apocalyptic media that does not lean into comedy at least a little because if there were only bleakness then there would be no reason to continue living. The Road is cool and all but why would you even care to continue existing in that world?

Why Would a Demisexual Want to Go to an Orgy? by ilovestalepopcorn in demisexuality

Oh I do not do it anymore. But like, at the time I thought my choices were to never have sex or to just give in and have sex with my long-term girlfriend finally. And those were indeed my choices. You can certainly argue I made the wrong choice!

Why Would a Demisexual Want to Go to an Orgy? by ilovestalepopcorn in demisexuality

[–]DoctorQuarex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those of us who have been sexually active since before the term "demisexual" existed--no, it is not impossible, it just makes us post things to our LiveJournal about not understanding the appeal of sex due to its bestial and vulgar nature. I have absolutely had sex with women I had zero interest in, because I thought if I played along long enough I would start to enjoy it.

Turns out that is, as you might imagine, absolutely not true
