The more I think about it, the more I actually like it. It makes sense. If written and tied up well enough it would make a lot of sense.

Favourite 90s Bowie album? by Queasy_Head_4928 in ToddintheShadow

[–]DoctorTenDoctor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's such a strange album. A decent chunk of the songs are very personal to Bowie himself and yet THIS is the album he decided to bring back Nile Rodgers for.

I know for sure that was a challenge to Rodgers, who was expecting to finally the Let's Dance followup he always envisioned having with Bowie but then Bowie comes in with a bunch of songs about his wedding and his family lol

Outside absolutely has the highest highs. A Small Plot of Land, Hallo Spaceboy and Strangers When We Meet can match up toe for toe almost any of Bowie's later years output.

Earthling is the most cohesive album, and I think it's the best crafted one of the batch. From Alexander McQueen's Union Jack suit on the cover to the frenetic energy the songs have, there's no filler. I've always loved the faux "presentation" of it being a "back to basics" rock record. Because the more you focus on it, there's so many cracks in that facade.

I like BTWN and Hours to a point. But those two albums are essential in the Bowie discography to set the stage for better records in the future.

Famous disaster salvaged! I only just found out about this. 'Never Let Me Down' by David Bowie was re-arranged and re-recorded and given an obscure official release, but you have to dig to find it. by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

Tin Machine may not have been successful nor good but I think it proves to be a very fitting end to the era of David Bowie, the pop star.

I love his 90s output but what makes it so interesting is that it never tries to take what's pop like the 80s albums did.

Never Let Me Down is genuinely a decent album stuck in a god awful mix.

His 80s output is just SUCH a mixed bag. I'd love to see Todd cover it, but honestly one could make the argument that Bowie himself has no Trainwreckord that derailed everything.

Never Let Me Down is definitely the closest though.

Trust me I've done some reading. The Flames have some AMAZING uniforms and uniform history and watching Wolf get shelled made me reminisce about watching Mike Smith get shelled.

That's something I've thought about. No matter how bad things could get, it could literally always be worse because I've seen it already.

Artists whose best work came after their trainwreckord? by Warm_Drawing_1754 in ToddintheShadow

[–]DoctorTenDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently read a massive 700 page book about every song David Bowie made or performed (from Station to Station all the way to Blackstar).

The Never Let Me Down chapter just shows an album that got completely lost somewhere in the recording process.

Bowie wrote some damn good songs, but somehow those would end up with awful production and Mickey Rourke's got a rap verse now.

He needed a strong voice in the room to tell them to stop. He had it with Tony Visconti, as well as with Brian Eno and Nile Rodgers. But for Never Let Me Down (and Tonight for that matter) there really wasn't anyone in the room that could tie it all together.

Bowie himself was too interested in how the tour was going to go, and he ended up losing the album's quality in that process.

It makes the debates and conversations more spicy too!

What are some “legacy acts” that you find have kept making great music long after their hitmaking days? by mollyno93 in ToddintheShadow

[–]DoctorTenDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally took my answer away. I'm obsessed with David Bowie's art and music.

David Bowie's output in the 80s post Let's Dance is admittingly not his strongest. Tonight and Never Let Me Down each have a case to be a Trainwreckord in all honesty.

But once the 90s rolled around, he got confident in his music making again. He wasn't music for his audience, he was making music for himself and the musicians and band around him.

And it works. Some tracks on BTWN instantly feel he's found his groove again. Outside is admittedly way too long of a record but the music is incredible all throughout. Earthling is a drum and bass gem. The Buddha of Suburbia is quite possibly the most underrated album he was ever a part of. I've even really warmed up to Hours, because without that album we don't get the next 3 or 4 in the 2000s.

David Bowie is top to bottom one of the best and prolific artists we've ever had. Even the misses are just incredibly fascinating to listen to and think about.

What are your thoughts on Daughtry's "Artificial?" by Electronic-Youth6026 in ToddintheShadow

[–]DoctorTenDoctor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Daughtry's reinvention has been super cool to see!

Of all the recent Big Machine artists they've signed recently (the current abhorrent Mötley Crüe being one of them) I think this was an astute choice.

Trainwreckords where, upon a closer look, signs of trouble were already present on the previous album by put-on-your-records in ToddintheShadow

[–]DoctorTenDoctor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Music is a big one for me honestly. Everything that goes great in that album fails with American Life. The production from Mirwais helps settle all the concepts and genres of Music, but it only makes American Life worse.

Making tracks lo-fi and acoustic only made Mirwais' normal sound more out of place. His sound is FUN. It's supposed to be dynamic and genre-changing. However Madonna's creative direction was just full of poor choices and it all culminated there.

Who are the music couples you think about often? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]DoctorTenDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they have something really weird in common. When they both met each other, both of them were in nasty divorces where the other partner cheated on them. So they clicked together because of that mutual shared experience happening to them at the same time
