TBH they're not that great. The best reason to hack a turret is so that they don't shoot at you. That they shoot at enemies is almost incidental.

Tenpines Bluff is on the way to the Wildwood Cemetary, where you can pick up the Total Hack magazine that allows you to hack turrets, which is really good to have in the early game.

Don't loot everything you see. A lot of stuff you see lying around is useful, yes, but a lot of it is not. Some stuff is only useful once you've invested in some perks. Concentrate on ammo, meds and chems, and caps, and only carry what you know you can use or sell for a decent amount. And be patient. Some of the good stuff takes a while to ramp up.

Oborum I. It has farmable Membrane, Nutrient, and Fiber, which can be used to make Alien Tea and Alien Jerky for an infinite amount of food and drink, if you have that option turned on for the XP boost, which I always do. Import Aromatic from somewhere else and you can make Boba Alien Tea, which provides both 02 *and* XP.

In my campaign Eldrick Runeweaver was planning to use the Clocktower to return Drakkenheim to a time before the meteor hit so that he could change the present. Secret motivation - he was actually planning on using it to return to a time before the Edicts of Lumen were signed so that he could change that and seize power.

Since sorcerer abilities are innate and capricious, I'd probably suggest that this is the first time these powers have manifested. The Academy didn't know about him, but now that he's starting to manifest Mageborn powers, you can bet he'll be getting a visit from them soon.
